Yahoo! Esports website shutting down due to AOL merger

There’s one power gaming websites are still vulnerable to: corporate direction and sponsorship. In a surprising letter published today, Yahoo! Esports — who covered not only fighting games, but also other big esports titles like League of Legends and Counter Strike: GO — announced its closure.

“Unfortunately, Yahoo Esports will no longer be updated after this Friday (June 16th),” writes Travis Gafford, Head of Esports Media at the site. “As Yahoo Sports becomes part of Oath, they are focusing on aligning with the new company strategy and are focused on growing the Yahoo Sports brand.”

An offshoot of many Yahoo! websites, the esport-dedicated site launched on March 2nd, 2016. SRK frequently linked back to their fighting game coverage, particularly Conversations and Fireballs segments, such as those with Fable|Kizzie Kay and CYG BST’s PR Balrog.

Verizon recently acquired Yahoo! for a $4.48 billion price tag. The company, alongside Huffington Post media sites, will be merged with AOL under a new company called Oath. According to Gafford, the “company strategy” leaves out the esports site in order to focus more on other assets.

Our team at Shoryuken would like to offer our gratitude to the staff at Yahoo! Esports, for their hard work in bringing more exposure to fighting games and esports at large. We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Eagle comes to Killer Instinct on June 27th, alongside patch 3.8

After being teased at Combo Breaker, we’ve finally got more footage and a release date for the cybernetic hunter and brother of Chief Thunder, Eagle. He will join the Killer Instinct roster on June 27th, coming along with patch 3.8. According to Iron Galaxy designer Adam “Keits” Heart, Eagle is a “mobile zoner” with “scary mixups from various ranges.” If you’re a fan of Green Arrow, Hawkeye or Nakoruru, Eagle should be right up your alley.

Based on the trailer, it confirms that Eagle’s bird will be an assist character, returning arrows to him if they miss their target. His quiver has a finite number of arrows, so you’ll need to call on your feathered friend to restock your ammo supply. Eagle can fire a single arrow or a flurry of three arrows, either as normal arrows or as flaming projectiles. Similar to Arbiter with his carbine shots, Eagle can fire off an arrow at the end of a combo to deal some extra damage.

As for his other attacks, Eagle has a special flip move where he can cross up opponents similar to Shadow Jago’s divekicks. He also seems to have a slide and a move very similar to Fulgore’s Axis Slash, which makes sense seeing as Eagle became the model for the current Fulgore units. We’ll no doubt get a full character breakdown in the future, but he looks perfect for anyone who loves hyper mobile projectile characters.

Patch 3.8 is also promised to have a bunch of balance changes as well, so look forward to those as well on June 27th. Expect Eagle to cost $4.99, similar to recent DLC characters.

Could a “Super Street Fighter V” restore fans’ faith in Street Fighter V?

Is rebranding the answer to the game’s woes?

Street Fighter V has not made the best impression in its first two years. As much as it has in common with prior Street Fighter titles, it’s still a product significantly different than what the fanbase expected, and this is reflected in its low sales and negative press. The approach of releasing a “service” rather than a complete game has created an ongoing sense of dissatisfaction from the community; functions visible but locked off in the CFN system only just started doing something in the latest update, nearly a year-and-a-half since launch. The roster has grown from 16 characters to 25 — but barely any new modes have been added, aside from minimal training content and a divisive cinematic story mode. Calls to overhaul core aspects of the game go unanswered — such as the reads-not-reactions input latency, and the infuriating rollback netcode — but we do regularly get new premium costumes to buy.

With new titles from competing publishers like Injustice 2, Tekken 7, and the Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 update releasing to general acclaim and positive reviews, Capcom is in a tougher spot than ever. Loyalty to the Street Fighter brand can only hold fans so long through months of disappointment and frustration, so what’s there to do? How do you please existing players, while attracting new ones? They could just throw all their eggs into the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite basket. Or — maybe it’s time for a rebrand.

The rumor

An old, amorphous leak recrystallized recently, its most recent appearance being on r/Kappa as part of a long post by Rikurikumore. (It’s also being discussed on NeoGAF.) Consisting of supposedly leaked character and mode information for both Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and Street Fighter V, the popularity of this leak list has grown through the confirmation of a number of its claims. Its MvC:I roster is looking very accurate so far. The section in question here is near the end of the post — after reiterating the older leak that claims Abigail, Menat, and Zeku are the remaining Season 2 DLC fighters for SFV (this has gained credibility through the older leak naming Akuma and Ed before they were announced), the post goes on to drop its “bombshell”: Super Street Fighter V.

The claim: instead of Season 3, Capcom will announce Super Street Fighter V for year three. As to not contradict their original promise — only having to buy the game once — SSFV will be a free update to SFV. It will include a user interface overhaul, and the following:

  • Arcade Mode
  • “Extra Battle” mode
  • a PvE mode where you battle the Illuminati
  • some “expanding on the existing mechanics”
  • new Critical Arts

… and maybe more! But that isn’t even what catches the most attention: the post also names the next six DLC fighters for the first year of SSFV, and it’s all returning characters:

  • Sagat
  • Sakura
  • C. Viper
  • Q
  • Oro
  • Necro

Supposedly, we can expect Capcom to officially announce Super Street Fighter V before the end of the Capcom Pro Tour, possibly at Capcom Cup itself. There is some speculation that Capcom might even drop the news this week at E3 2017.

sfiv-sagat-750

The reliability

Is this “leak” reliable? Or is it sheer fiction and/or speculation? There’s no way yet to be sure it’s the latter. There’s no way to rule out that it may be the former, either. The main source of credibility in this instance is the growing accuracy of the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite character roster leak preceding it, and the likelihood-by-association of the Super Street Fighter V information being coupled with the highly-likely Season 2 character list. The reddit user even jokes that Alex Valle already leaked the next character DLC list for SFV earlier on Twitter, in the form of a joke:

Does Valle know something we don’t? Necro is already in a stage background (Spooky Arena), C. Viper, Oro, and Sakura all appear in character story modes, and Sagat and Q are among the most-requested characters to return.

sfv-story-oro-leak

Hmm… maybe DreamHack didn’t make a mistake, and was just ahead of the curve…?

Or if you prefer the conspiracy-theory approach, maybe Capcom was planning this all along — based on the photographic evidence from Alex’s license plate in the City in Chaos stage:

Street Fighter V - stage select - City in Chaos

This proves it!

From a cynical standpoint, the SSFV rumor seems suspicious simply because it reads like a community wish list. We cried for Arcade Mode (well, I personally didn’t, but that’s another article), we cried for Q, we begged for Sagat to return. Capcom should be taking community feedback into account — but so far, it barely has. It’s hard to believe now that the developers are finally listening.

The reality

So, let’s just suppose this rumor is dead-on accurate, and Capcom will be hitting us with a Super upgrade next year. Will it accomplish anything?

Community reaction to a “Super” SFV rebrand along these lines has been generally positive, supporting the idea that a SSFV could be spun into an effective relaunch of a “new,” more complete product. This could result in improved public perception of the Street Fighter brand — provided it is a free upgrade, and it doesn’t fragment the player base. James Chen talks about this at length in an episode of Unchensored (NSFW, as suggested by the title!).

I agree with this to a degree; it will likely boost sales somewhat, and positive press may draw back frustrated players that have dropped the game to retry it. A Street Fighter V that has washed away the complaints about poor offline content will undoubtedly be a stronger presence in the fighting game community — and things like an Arcade Mode, and a mode to beat up CPU Illuminati, will help support that elusive “casual” customer. Bringing back fan-favorite characters like Sakura, Q, and especially Sagat will foster even more goodwill (presuming they don’t change too much). New Critical Arts may help add some asked-for variety (although, I believe the call for new V-Skills/V-Triggers has been louder). And it’s hard to complain about a free upgrade. If Super SFV cost an extra $30, that’d be a much different matter.

That casual consumer market might easily jump on and enjoy Super Street Fighter V — if they look past the old Champion Edition/Super/Turbo/Ultra re-release silliness. A “Super” prefix could indeed be just the thing Street Fighter V needs to clean up its stained image — for the more casual gamer. However, unless the things that serious players have voiced issues with loudly and repeatedly — input latency, poor netcode, player 2 rematch control — are not effectively addressed, the improvements offered by a Super upgrade won’t make much difference among the competitive community. A new coat of paint won’t make a lemon run.

For the sake of their fans, for the sake of Street Fighter, and for the sake of Capcom themselves, I want them to get it right.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite footage and impressions from the E3 floor: Angelic, Justin Wong, FChamp, and others

While the Story Demo of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is now in our hands, this is more to show off the game’s single player content than it is for people to try mechanics out. At E3 2017 however, a different — more complete — and seemingly better-looking build is playable on the show floor. As expected, a number of top players have made their way to the Los Angeles Convention Center for a chance to try the game out and share their impressions. Luckily for us, they have taken to social media and YouTube to share some clips and impressions of the game.

Some of these are just short clips of stuff they found surprising. Armando “Angelic” Mejia, for one, seems surprised at Zero’s new moves, using the kicks he’s now gained with MvC:I’s more traditional control scheme.

Meanwhile, Team Spooky’s Josh “NerdJosh” Jodoin was playing some sets with Eliver “Killer Kai” Ling. One thing he found surprising was how the game handled tagging pre-match. Simply hitting the tag button during the ready state, before the word “fight” comes out, resulted in a tag.

In addition to this, both Josh and Eliver shared a few more impressions, mostly testing stuff with Morrigan — who was pretty dominant in the previous game.

Eliver also shot this video of Splyce’s Ryan “Filipino Champ” Ramirez going up against Snake Tits.

Snake Tits himself has this to say about the game’s mechanics.

Meanwhile, Filipino Champ and fellow NorCal resident, Echo Fox’s Justin Wong, have been posting a lot of videos and photos of the game. Both seem pretty impressed with Thanos, showing off some mixups with the mad titan.

FChamp also shot some footage of a Thanos combo being performed by Capcom’s Peter “ComboFiend” Rosas himself.

Rosas also demonstrated another combo, this time for Nova:

Justin himself seems pretty impressed with Nova’s incarnation in the game.

He also mentioned finding “the best team in the game” which, judging by his photos, is either Zero and Mega Man X, or Ultron and Captain Marvel.

Of course, with E3 still ongoing, there’s bound to be more footage and impressions coming out of the event. Stay locked on to Shoryuken for more of these as the week goes on!

Ori from Ori and the Blind Forest joins the Rivals of Aether roster this summer

In a collaboration with Moon Studios, the titular hero from Ori and the Blind Forest is joining the Rivals of Aether roster later this summer. Together with her spirit companion Sein, the duo utilizes all the abilities they learned in their first adventure to fight against their opponents.

Ori and Sein are akin to other puppet characters like Rosalina and Luma, with Ori acting as the frontline fighter while Sein provides support. Sein is able to juggle opponents with Spirit Flame and Charged Flame, allowing Ori to come in and continue a combo. Ori can even use her Bash ability to fling enemy projectiles back at the user. When combined with her Light Burst, she can even redirect her own projectiles or even catapult opponents across the screen, if she times the Bash right.

Ori and Sein also come with the new Spirit Tree stage, which can be played in both Competitive and Aether forms. In the Aether form, the evil owl spirit Kuro swoops in to attack opponents who fall off the stage, while the friendly Gumo will occasionally move the log platform in the center of the stage.

Ori and Sein will be available on both Steam and Xbox One later this summer, going for $4.99. Their release will coincide with the full launch of Rivals of Aether on Xbox One, meaning console players can finally start gaining on their PC counterparts. More original characters are coming to Rivals of Aether this fall, so stay tuned for more DLC combatants later this year.

ComboFiend’s video tutorial breaks down Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite’s controls and mechanics

We’re learning a lot about Marvel vs. Capcom’s cinematic, more-involving Story Mode, as well as who’s actually going to be in it, but what about the nitty-gritty details — the system mechanics and controls? This year’s E3 is rich in presentations, and Peter “ComboFiend” Rosas from Capcom is here to provide a quick but detailed rundown of what buttons we’ll use for Hyper Combos to smash the opposing duos.

Here’s the basic control scheme diagram provided in the video:

mvcicontrolscheme

New to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite are:

  • Simple Commands
    • Execute an auto-combo by repeatedly pressing the light punch button; less damage but always works.
    • Pressing heavy punch and heavy kick together do an “Easy Hyper Combo” — one of the character’s supers.
  • Active Switch
    • Switch characters any time with one button.
    • Can also switch character while they’re attacked, to “Counter Switch.” Spends two bars.
  • Infinity Stone
    • Infinity Surge — a unique action different to each Stone.
    • Infinity Storm — trigger the full power of the Stone to completely change the battlefield in your favor.

Check out the detailed description and display of each mechanic in the video below:

In related news, the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Story Demo is now available for free on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Sudden boom seen in Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- owners after Dragon Ball FighterZ announcement

Sales-estimating website SteamSpy is reporting a sudden burst in PC sales for Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-; the timing of this surge coincides with the announcement of ArcSystemWorks’s upcoming anime fighter, Dragon Ball FighterZ. It appears new players are diving into the ASW catalog to prepare themselves for the impending Dragon Ball title.

DBFZ logo

On June 8, SteamSpy reported 37,600 owners for the popular air-dashing fighter. On June 9, the first reports of DBFZ’s existence were leaked. June 11 was the official announcement of Dragon Ball FighterZ. By June 11, SteamSpy estimated a new total of 46,366 owners, an increase of 8,766 total in 3 days. That’s about 19% of total sales for the game over three days. BlazBlue: Central Fiction also had a small push of about 2,000+ owners.

It is worth noting that SteamSpy is not 100% accurate, as it measures owners and not actual sales. However, the spike is quite unlike anything Xrd has seen on the Steam platform since its release.
