Reverse Demon Slayer combos allow practical and flashy unblockable setups for Pokkén Tournament’s Gardevoir

For whatever reason, Gardevoir Twitter has been exceptionally active over the past few weeks.  Recent lab work on Pokkén Tournament’s Psychic/Fairy has revealed some exciting new combos with a backwards launching Demon Slayer (forward+X). As demonstrated by Pokkén player Bendy:

Both combos above allow the player to setup the holy grail of high-level Gardevoir: ambiguous unblockable setups. Certainly not something the original owner of Demon Slayer–Tekken’s Asuka–could do!

But that’s not all that’s come out of the Gardevoir lab:

Gardevoir’s Psychic is a great wakeup and long-range pressure tool. Kaloncpu57, however, found a way to combo the brutally slow move into itself.

Rounding out this list, Japanese Pokkén player Sanaito demonstrates combo starting height requirements for Gardevoir’s dress slam, jump X. The opponent’s hitbox plays an important role in determining the advantage on hit, and the safety on block.

Mikado Arcade shows off nearly 2 hours of tournament footage for Marvel Super Heroes

Before Marvel vs. Capcom became synonymous with “Marvel fighting game,” Capcom developed two 1v1 fighters for the famous comic book empire. Marvel Super Heroes was the second entry of the series, and featured a wide variety of unusual mechanics–most notably it’s Infinity Gem system. World-famous Mikado Arcade showed off what this game has to offer in a great tournament recently.

The Infinity Gem system allows players to enjoy a wide variety of subsystems and buffs, which you can read further about at the SRK Wiki. The gems have to be obtained manually as they appear, creating a interesting mental game where you may potentially want to give up pressure to go chase down a gem. Furthermore, gems spawn after fulfilling in-game actions, such as getting the first attack in a round, or by entering a low health state. In a way it can be considered a early example of a comeback mechanic, although more nuanced and creative one.

After the tournament, Mikado went the extra mile and did a Thanos exhibition. In a game known for its long, high-damage combos, Thanos’ are some of the easiest and most threatening. If you’ve only played Marvel vs. Capcom 2, you may not be familiar with how strong the Mad Titan was in his original games. After watching him ravage the competition here, you’ll have an idea of just how terrifying this character could be were he to show up in Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite.

The story behind Bang the Machine, a fighting game documentary disrupted by the 9/11 attack

Many of us precisely remember where we were when the September 11 attack happened in 2001. Peter Kang watched not only the World Trade Center towers crumble, but also the dreams and hope for this Street Fighter-centered documentary: Bang the Machine.

As the team’s office was indeed in one of the towers, almost everything was lost. The documentary has never been officially published, despite a promising showing at the 2002 SXSW film festival. Another thing that hurt salvaging the documentary was usage of expensive, copyrighted music, that often was mixed in with audio interviews, making it too difficult to separate unless they wanted to cut the original audio. As a result the finished film was much smaller in scope than intended, and has only received limited screenings. Kang hasn’t given up entirely, and a fundraising campaign is one way he could mount a comeback.

Read up on the full feature on Bang the Machine over at Game Informer to learn more about how it planned to showcase the fighting game community.

Cross Counter TV expands into Super Smash Bros. Melee with new series “The Reads” featuring Scar and Toph

Hoping to bring the Excellent Adventures format to other fighting games, Cross Counter TV is expanding into Super Smash Bros. Melee with their new series titled “The Reads.” Starring Bobby “Scar” Scarnewman, Kris “Toph” Aldenderfer, and one special guest from the world of Melee, these three will venture out into the wilds of Melee netplay to get some wins, sprinkle some salt and generally entertain the audience.

The first episode of The Reads will feature Team Secret’s own SilentWolf, who will accompany Scar and Toph as they attempt to show the world that they can still keep up in the fast-paced world of Melee. Updated trials are coming to Street Fighter V, according to datamined evidence

Street Fighter V’s trials may be getting a long-overdue update to match the current build.

Since Season 2 first made its significant changes to Street Fighter V, the trial mode has been outdated, left running in the game’s Season 1 state. However, it seems that we may soon see a refresh to these obsolete trials, as either an addition or replacement, to match the upcoming balance patch.

In the video below, VesperArcade discusses the new combo trials–datamined by X-Kira, and now with video evidence posted to YouTube–and how they appear to be slightly more difficult to perform, but more optimal in terms of gameplay application. The videos for the datamined trials can be found here. When–or even if–these will be integrated into Street Fighter V officiallyhas not yet been revealed.

Brainiac arrives for the final chapter of Injustice 2’s Shattered Alliances this Thursday

We’re a mere 28 days away from the release of Injustice 2, so NetherRealm Studios’ hype train is continuing at full speed ahead. While we’ve recently seen the official gameplay trailer for the Society’s Poison Ivy–who will be the recipient of a full character breakdown alongside Catwoman and a third yet-to-be-named character, on the next Watchtower livestream sometime this week–we do have a concrete release date on the next piece of content: specifically the next Shattered Alliances story trailer.

The final chapter, focusing on Brainiac, will be released this Thursday according to the Injsutice Twitter account. While we’ve seen a few in-game screenshots of the character, after he was unveiled as the narrator of “The Lines Redrawn” trailer, in addition to being the game’s new lead antagonist (and likely final boss), we haven’t seen any form of gameplay from the Collector of Worlds. This trailer will hopefully provide us with a taste, along with a larger look at his role within the game’s Story Mode, as the battle for power between the Insurgency, Regime and Society rages on. You can see the official tweet below, along with a new piece of artwork for Brainiac.

If you’re craving more information, check out Heat Vision’s interview with Tom Taylor about the Injustice 2 comic book here, the Multiverse Mode that was revealed at the Insomnia Gaming Festival, and don’t forget that the next character will be revealed on April 28th! You can also catch the other parts of Shattered Alliances at the links below:

Injustice 2 will be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 16th.
