The “Super Street Fighter Carnival 2016” festivities continue! SSFC2016 is the currently ongoing Japanese tournament series at Mikado Arcade that pays tribute to older,–and sometimes completely forgotten–fighting games. If you missed the first few tournaments from SSFC2016, don’t sweat it!

These events are never complete without a Fatal Fury game or two, so “Fatal Fury Special” is a welcome inclusion, albeit unsurprising one for anyone that follows Mikado. (Which you should.)

But! There was no version of myself prepared to see a tournament for FORCE FIVE. This, for a couple of reasons–3D fighters have a much lower chance of showing up at these sort of events, traditionally. Oh, also: there’s the fact I legitimately had never heard of it! I’m apparently not alone: it’s an unreleased fighting game by Sammy and Anchor that was only very recently obtained. Haven’t heard of Anchor? We both can be forgiven, then: they almost exclusively work on wrestling and UFC games.

The company was founded by former Tekken team members. I didn’t find this out until after I watched the below tournament, and it honestly makes a lot of sense–there appears to be some very Tekken-esque movement in the game. Is that backdash canceling I’m seeing? It’s honestly surprising to me this game never saw the light of day until now, as it seems remarkably complete.

I don’t know about you, but Del Sol, the luchador that chucks energy versions of himself to body splash his opponent, is my new favorite fighting game character.

Has Chaos Code, a PlayStation 3 anime fighter, been under your radar so far? As the game lacked Network Mode in its first console iteration, it hasn’t developed as much of a scene as its fellow air-dashers. Following up on the news of a PlayStation 4 remaster of Chaos Code, developer FK Digital released a few new videos that are great starting points for newcomers.

If you’ve never played Chaos Code before, the following video (originally created by lolokoa) provides a detailed breakdown of the mechanics.

Curious about what modes will be included? The trailer below showcases them, and the game will include Network Mode.

Among four new characters (two of which are alternate versions of Cait & Sith) included in Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe, “boss” versions of every character in the cast will be selectable:

This year has seen of rise of fighting games in the general esports scene. We have transcended previous highs with larger events, more exciting results, and even seeing partnership with major media channels such as ESPN and Yahoo!

In order to commemorate such accomplishments, the Esports Industry Awards has nominated Fighting Game Community events and alumni for various categories in their upcoming awards ceremony.

The most prominent one would most certainly be Evolution 2016 being nominated for Live Event of the Year. The event, which garnered over 5,000 entrants in Street Fighter V alone, a near sellout at Mandalay Bay Events Center, and 200,000 unique viewers on ESPN2, has a formidable chance of winning the award.

Other notable nominees are in categories such as New eSports Game of the Year (Street Fighter V), eSports Publisher of the Year (Capcom), eSports Game of the Year (Street Fighter V and Super Smash Bros.), Console Player of the Year (Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios, Adam “Armada” Lindgren, Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma, Nathan “Mister Crimson” Massol, and Justin Wong), and UK Player of the Year (Ryan “Prodigal Son” Hart and Benjamin “Problem X” Simon).

The latest post-release balance patch for King of Fighters XIV will arrive later today at approximately 6 p.m PDT (9 p.m. EST) as announced by SNK Playmore’s official Twitter account. While the game is still young, several characters including Nakoruru, K’, Love Heart, Mai, Mature and Athena have been clear standouts during the game’s early months.

This patch will be game version 1.03, following a day one balance patch and an update focused on the game’s netcode. With a cast of more than 40 characters, the community will have to wait and see how SNK chooses to create parity between them.

About a week ago, Evo 2016 champion Lee “Infiltration” Seon-woo from Team Razer dropped the bomb that Razer is hard at work on a new arcade stick for PlayStation 4. Now, it seems we have our first glimpse of said arcade stick.

In a recent tweet, Razer showed a promotional photo of the supposed contents of Infiltration’s backpack.  The centerpiece of the shot shows a blue Atrox featuring a new, larger switch panel with a touch pad positioned near the center of the stick (similar to MadCat’z TE-S+).

However, it isn’t just Infiltration who has this stick in his bag. It seems that his teammate Xian also has the PS4 Atrox prototype in his bag, and has in fact been spotted testing it the wild. NCK Feroce from the Shoryuken forums was able to take some photos of Xian’s PS4 Atrox prototype at the CPT European Finals at Milan Games Week this past weekend.

In addition to this, it seems that Xian was using the PS4 Atrox prototype at SEAM 2016 as well. This is interesting, as Infiltration was mostly seen using a MadCatz TE2+, most likely the ones provided on the Steam setups at the event.

Combined with Razer’s tweet, these shots of the stick in what seems to be near final form being tested in the wild seem to indicate it’s almost ready for production. Razer have had it rough as of late with their arcade sticks, with the modded Atroxes that their players have been using suffering from issues at some tournaments, and most famously, Evil Geniuses’ Momochi suffering from a disconnect at Evo 2015 Grand Finals that almost cost him the tournament. A new Atrox built specifically for PlayStation 4 would address these issues while at the same time, give Razer a foot in the door for what is seemingly the console of choice for fighting games this generation.

For the most part, Japanese companies have been slow when it comes to sponsoring players to play fighting games; so far, HORI has been the only company from Japan to do so. Now, another Japanese company is throwing their hat into the ring.

Sanwa Denshi announced this weekend that they have signed Japanese player M’ as their first King of Fighters player. M’ actually participated in last weekend’s KOF XIV tournament at Toushinsai as a player for Sanwa.

In addition to this being only the second time a Japanese peripheral company has signed a player, this is arguably the first time a Japanese King of Fighters player has received this kind of corporate sponsorship.
