Maximilian Announces Return of Marvel Vs. Capcom “Assist Me” Series

After taking some time away to make editions of the series for Mortal Kombat XL, Killer Instinct and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, during his panel last week at Evo 2016, FGC content creator Maximilian announced the return of the series that started it all, Marvel Vs. Capcom Assist Me.  The show is still in early production, but more news will be coming in the future, as the crew just wanted to let the fans know they were working on it at this time.

For those unfamiliar with the series, it served as a Character Tutorial Series for many of Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3’s various cast members, with live-action skits mixed in, as Max and various actors playing the characters asking him for help in improving their abilities, getting into some comedic hijinks.

Doom, Wesker, Laura and Benny are back, with the trailer having a very Star Wars Episode VII vibe to it, as various scenes from the series are on display.  There are also appearances by Morrigan and Wolverine, who could possibly be two of the highlighted characters this Season?

This is certainly an entertaining development for fans of Marvel and of his work, and we’ll certainly pass along more details here at Shoryuken, as they become available.

What characters would you like to see covered in the next Season of the series?

Killer Instinct Community Pays Tribute to Pusha T at Evo 2016

Despite being small, the Killer Instinct community has come to be known as an extremely tight-knit group. They further displayed that solidarity by paying tribute to the late Terrance “Pusha T” Moore at Evo 2016. Moore passed away on October 17, 2014, after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest moments after competing on Stream at The Runback, and was unable to be revived.

Recognized as a large part of the Southern Californian KI scene, a gathering was held last Friday by Las Vegas player and Royal Flush 7 member Abel “Emperor Menzo” Arellano, which was attended by 31 players, including PAG|PinkDiamond, BH|Thompxson, and even international players Reto and OGTY.

Illya “C88 Ill Will” Walker, reflected on his teammate’s “contagious, positive spirit that is vital for the continued growth in the FGC.”  He also felt that Moore would want new players to be encouraged to continue playing the game, and was always a proponent of community building.

“Some people we didn’t know in the community; we just saw them playing the game and they just look like they were discouraged,” he said.  “Aye, let’s go cheer them on.  That’s what we do, that’s how we got around […] I am telling y’all that right now, we stayed to cheer on the winners and the losers as well.”

Pusha T was a great player, friend and man to so many people and he will certainly be missed, but one thing is certain, the KI community will never forget him.

Watch the USA vs. JP 5v5 Pokkén Tournament Team Battle from Evo’s Anime Suite

After the defeat of GO-1 and Abadango at CEO 2016’s Pokkén Tournament, I made the claim that the US players had closed the year long skill gap that the Pokkén Arcade release afforded the Japanese scene. In my eyes, we were finally playing the same game!

Now that the dust has settled from Evo’s Pokkén Tournament, the largest and most international Pokkén event to date, the results certainly seem to verify this: from the ashes of 1156 players, there was a even split in top 4 between US and Japan. Every match was grueling and exhilarating to watch. For a brand new fighting game IP, it was a fantastic showing that I absolutely encourage you to watch it for yourself. (If you are the small percentage of those interested in Pokkén that haven’t seen it yet, of course!)

But! Those were not the only games played between these long distance rivals. As previously reported, the American and Japanese communities worked together to organize a team battle of their own. As these matches occurred after the official Evo event, these players now knew each other even better, tendencies and all. It’s phenomenal enough to make it through the quadruple-digit-entrant tournament and place as an individual. How well can these communities come together as teams now that they have reads on each other?

Filmed and provided by RvLMillnable, these matches are every bit as high level and vicious as their singles counterparts. Included in the collapsible list below are the teams and their orders, with character usage and EVO placements listed.

5v5 Team Lineup

No surprise that USA, as usual, came into this as the mathematical underdog. Stats don’t tell us everything, though, and the close matches above prove that. Set some time aside, sip something nice, and enjoy this great, community organized team event.

ESL Asia Launches Street Fighter V Community Cup

One of the things that Street Fighter V brought with it was it’s Kagemusha, rollback-based netcode that allowed for a better online experience than it’s predecessor. This has allowed online tournaments to become a viable for of competition for the game.

The ESL has already taken advantage of this by hosting online tournaments in Europe and North America, now it’s set to bring this to East Asia as well with the Street Fighter V Community Cup.

Street Fighter V Community Cup Asia # 1 takes place on Sunday, July 24. The online tournament is open to both PlayStation 4 and PC players from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Those interested in joining the tournament can register here.

Fuzzy Guard Instant Overhead Discovered In the King Of Fighters XIV’s Demo

The free demo for SNK’s the King of Fighters XIV is now out to download on PlayStation 4. As such, players from all over the world have been figuring out combos for the 7 playable characters.

Combos aren’t the only thing that players have discovered however, veteran Japanese player Dune has shared a video showing that the game has “fuzzy guard” that leads to instant overheads.

More common in Capcom and Arc System Works games, this is the first time that “fuzzy guard” has been found in the King of Fighters series. As for how it works, this is to the way blocking is programmed. When standing to block a jump in or overhead, and then immediately crouching to try and block low, the hurt boxes for the standing position still remain. This allows characters perform an instant overhead with the correct timing. You can check this out in Dune’s video below.

Interestingly enough, aside from this instance being the first time “fuzzy guard” has been found in a KoF game, it’s actually easier to pull off here as well. This is because a blocked jumping C + D attack leaves the standing hurtbox active for a very long time.

As for how this will affect the King of Fighters XIV’s metagame, it’s hard to predict since this is only a demo and we’re not sure if this will be in the final game. However, it it remains, it will likely benefit characters who are able to combo from jump in attacks.

The King of Fighters XIV hits PlayStation 4 on August 23 in North America, August 25 in Japan, and August 26 in Europe.

Smash Wii U Player Christian “Hyuga” Medina Dropped by Sponsor VGBootCamp

Christian “Hyuga” Medina was dropped by his sponsor, VGBootCamp, following allegations of sexual assault. According to a statements released by VGBC and the victim, Medina groped a female player on two occasions while she was attempting to sleep.

Medina had been invited to stay in a hotel room with the several other players after becoming heavily intoxicated on Saturday night, July 16. VGBC, who announced their sponsorship of Hyuga just 3 days ago, spoke to witnesses in the room to confirm the incident before making the decision to dismiss him.

A number of Smash for Wii U community members have condemned Medina’s actions and have called for him to be barred from future events. Hailing from Mexico, Hyuga had earned international regard for his Toon Link play over the last year. Following his release from VGBootCamp, Medina posted a statement to Twitter but has since deactivated his social media accounts.

“We want to set a precedent for all teams and sponsored players in the smash community to say that these actions will not be glossed over and ignored,” VGBootCamp wrote in their statement.

The fighting game community has worked to combat incidents of sexual harassment at major events this year.

Blue Beetle and Wonder Woman Battle it Out in New Trailer for Injustice 2

Introduced during its own panel at San Diego Comic Con, DC Comics and NetherRealm Studios have revealed the next two fighters for Injustice 2, being returning fighter Wonder Woman and brand new addition Blue Beetle. Wonder Woman retains her sword, shield and the famous Lasso of Truth while Blue Beetle utilises the high tech weaponry of his insectoid battle suit to duke it out against his opponent. A PlayStation Blog entry has shed some light on the unique abilites of both fighters, with Wonder Woman being able to deflect incoming fireballs with her Bracelets of Submission, while her new character trait has her calling on the pantheon of Greek gods to aid her in the fight. For example, she can call upon Hermes to give her an air dash and a general mobility boost. For Blue Beetle, NetherRealm must have taken inspiration from D’Vorah, as Blue Beetle’s ability has him summoning blades from the scarab bonded to his spine to stab at incoming opponents. The animation is similar to that of the Swarn Queen from Mortal Kombat X, so look out for more instances of shared animations and traits between the two games.

To use these gnarly looking blades, Blue Beetle must temporarily give up the ability to fire his arm cannons, which allow him to fire quick energy blasts on the ground and in the air. You can toggle the blades on and off as part of his unique character trait. Along with said blades and blasters, Blue Beetle can use his wings to dart around the screen and he can even morph his hands into shields and clubs for massive close up damage. They are using the latest incarnation of Blue Beetle, Jamie Reyes, in Injustice 2 so maybe expect other Teen Titans joining the fray in future trailers. I still hope my main man Booster Gold joins the fray and is able to fight alongside his best mate Blue Beetle.

GGPO netcode and a dedicated Tournament Mode was also announced alongside these two fighters so expect a place for dedicated tournament players to face off without the fear of Gear skewing results in a certain combatant’s direction. Expect more in-depth news about this Tournament Mode, as well as some hands-on impressions of both Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle coming off the show floor in the next day or so.

EVO 2016 Side Tournament Results

While thousands of players from across the globe converged on Las Vegas, Nevada to battle for supremacy across nine official titles at Evolution 2016, there was also a myriad of unofficial Side Tournaments that were held by members of the community, who wanted to ensure that the games they love still had a presence at the event, despite being outside of the glare of the main spotlight. From ANIMEVO, which played host to a variety of “Air Dasher” titles, including Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, which was part of the official lineup at last year’s event, to a King Of Fighters XIV Tournament, hosted by ATLUS and SNK, a little bit of everything was on display, and we’ve got Results here for you!

Learn About the Guys that Fix Your Arcade Sticks in this Candid Look at the Evo Modding Station

Deep in the thick of the Evolution vendor booths, there are always a bunch of guys quietly whittling away. Every year they congregate at Evo and various other majors, with circuit boards, joysticks, and soldering irons.  While most other vendors are selling their wares of parts, shirts, and art prints, these unsung heroes are selling their time, fixing joysticks or making joysticks work on more systems than they do out of the box.

These are the unsung heroes of events.  These modders, a group of people that congregate around the Tech Talk forum here at Shoryuken.com, but meet up at nearly every major to take care of players’ needs before, during, and at times even after the event.  They charge a pretty penny for parts and labor, but ultimately, are the guys to go to for the every man who either don’t know how to mod or don’t have the time and resources to do it themselves.

This year, when I arrived into the venue, these men were already busy, with stacks of arcade sticks waist high behind them, ready to mod.  And they were all engrossed in their work, exchanging jokes amongst each other to keep the atmosphere lively as they worked.  And they all seemed to enjoy the job.

While they are there to make money, it is often the community and being able to enjoy that aspect that continues to bring them out to events, where they could easily only take commissions online to save on overhead. John “DaRabidDuckie” Wade, a well known modder from Wisconsin, stated, “I wasn’t even going to show up to Evo, because it was getting harder for me to afford going to tournaments. I couldn’t even afford the flight to come out here. But then people were contacting me and saying they would pay me up front for work I would do for them at Evo, so the community literally paid for my flight ticket, my transportation, and half the hotel room. I have a lot of work I have to do to catch up to that, but it’s because of the community that I’m here.”

Victor “Vicko” Ramirez, a Las Vegas native who has been at most of the majors throughout the year, added, “I get to make a lot of friends here, I like traveling, resting on the plane. It’s fun and it’s an overall pleasant experience.”

However, for some, it’s for fun that can’t be found where they’re from.  Matthew Gummo, when asked about why he comes to Evo to mod, stated, “There’s a slot machine here in Vegas called Goldfish, and every year, I find another revision to the game.  The first year, it was Goldfish. Then there was a Goldfish 2, and then a third game. Then last year, I found Paradise Fishing, which was the exact opposite of Goldfish. I’m just modding sticks so I have money to play the slots.”

While all of them enjoy the community, and have fun doing these events in various ways, one of the biggest sacrifices they make is not being able to take part in the fun that we all take for granted–actually competing in the events.  “I did start going to tournaments to mod while trying to also play in the events,” stated Gummo. “But it got to the point where the further I went into the tournament, the less time I had to mod, which makes it less beneficial to me.  So, if I ever play, it’s usually just a side tournament.”

“I think it was two years ago that I decided I was finished with competing,” added Ramirez. “That whole last year I spent competing, I only entered Evo. For me, that was just a waste of time and money, and I’m definitely a lot more productive modding.”

With these types of events come some difficulties in doing their work, with time restraints being one of the biggest issues that exist.  “I would say (one of the biggest issues is) the lack of sleep and just the overall pressure of making sure everyone is satisfied before I leave,” stated Ramirez, “because I could have an angry customer show up just before a tournament’s over when one of us needs to get on a plane. I try to cut it really close, so I don’t have to stay overnight on the last night of an event. I’ve missed a couple of flights due to this, so that’s a common problem that I have.”

Gummo, who is well known for his unique modifications, such as an arcade stick with an Ouya built into the casing, or a V-Tech Smile joystick modified to work on PlayStation 3, added, “When I’m at a tournament, I prefer standard modifications.  I’m not scared of doing unique mods, but I like money, and I’m trying to get as many sticks modded as possible while I’m here.”

However, with all these sacrifices come a service that fills a huge void in a community that needs their gear properly tuned for events, assuring that nothing will go wrong during the course of a tournament.  Gummo believes that having modders at events like Evo makes the tournament run a lot more smoothly, stating, “There aren’t a bunch of people begging to borrow sticks, and it makes life easier for the customer because they only have to carry around one stick while they’re here.”

“There have been circumstances where tournament organizers have needed us for something, such as an emergency repair, and having us there made a bad situation a lot easier to deal with,” added Wade. “Could Evo run without us?  Yes, absolutely. But it’s one of those cases where when we’re around, it’s nice to have us there.”

But one issue that was found to be a problem this year was the change in venue for the finals, forcing them and other vendors to shut down a day earlier than expected.  When asked about this, Wade stated, “I’m not going to lie, it hurts us a lot. We’re not able to talk to customers on Sunday, and we have to haul everything up to the hotel room to finish. We already have a hard time finishing up everyone’s sticks because there are so many people that want work done, which is a good problem to have. Last year, we were here two to three days after the event, either in a hotel room or at Vicko’s house to finish the workload.  We’re likely to do that again this year.”

But when asked if they enjoyed doing this, they all agreed that it was worth the time and effort, and Ramirez even offered advice for the next generation of modders who may be brave enough to join them at their booth next time.

“Practice on something that’s yours. Don’t practice on a customer’s stick if you are not comfortable. You could take apart old electronics, controllers, radios, something you may not need anymore. Just get your soldering iron hot, get comfortable with it, find out your preferred heat range, and get rid of a lot of bad habits before you try to make a profession or a second job out of it.”

So the next time you see a group of guys at a major huddled around joysticks with soldering irons in hand, be sure to stop buy, shake their hands, and offer them tips or drinks to help keep them going.  Without these guys, a lot of people would be stuck on outdated or broken hardware.

Capcom’s haunts Clarifies: Street Fighter V’s CPT DLC Revenue Will Support the Community

When the Capcom Pro Tour content for Street Fighter V was revealed at Evo 2016, many balked at the idea of dropping $24.99 for essentially a new stage and a couple of costumes; Capcom promised that proceeds from the sale of this DLC would be directed back into the Capcom Pro Tour itself.

Capcom Community Director “haunts” posted on NeoGAF last night, to reassure the FGC that the CPT DLC revenue was indeed bound for the community, not Capcom’s pockets. He states that “the majority of the revenue is being invested back into the Capcom Pro Tour,” and that they “didn’t create this content with the intention of making a profit for ourselves, it’s to support the community.” He also promised a full FAQ to answer future questions.

haunts_neogaf_cpt_dlc_post_1

He went on to explain that the revenue will be directed at both the 2016 and 2017 Capcom Pro Tour seasons, and took responsibility for the vagueness of the revenue distribution information so far. He indicated it will be clarified in the future.
