Ultra Street Fighter IV Heading to PlayStation 4 in Spring 2015

While everyone is busy freaking out about Street Fighter V, Capcom and Sony haven’t forgotten about Ultra Street Fighter IV.

During the opening ceremonies at this weekend’s PlayStation Experience, it was announced that Ultra Street Fighter IV will be heading exclusively to PlayStation 4. According to Sony vice president Adam Boyes, unnamed first-party studios are helping Capcom bring it to the new platform.

In addition to the game, it will include all of the downloadable costumes made available before its official release.

Ultra Street Fighter IV will be available on the current-generation console sometime in Spring 2015. Until then, check out the trailer below.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Walks Away as Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2014

Tonight, Geoff Keighley presented yet another attempt at a gaming awards show, this time striking off on his own in an effort to give the event the pizzazz it deserves.

One of the categories was, naturally, fighting games. The nominees included Killer Instinct (season two), Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Ultra Street Fighter IV.

Now, while these awards weren’t meant for the competitive audience, it’s still interesting to see how the larger gaming crowd takes to the genre. Additionally, Keighley pulled together a variety of industry folks, from journalists to developers, to help decide the winners in each category.

In the end, they chose Super Smash Bros. for Wii U as the year’s best fighter, proving that the franchise has a level of recognition that surpasses even Street Fighter at this point.

So, what do you think? Was this deserved? We’ll be running our own set of polls in the near future (similar to what we did last year) but, for now, feel free to give us your thoughts in the comments.

NorCal Fight Club League Returns in January, B League Qualifiers Begin Tonight

Earlier this year, Pandora House brought Northern California together with the NorCal Fight Club League. Taking nods from TOPANGA’s own league, various members of the local community were gathered to compete in a round-robin competition to decide the region’s Ultra Street Fighter IV champion.

After three intense rounds, Evil Geniuses’ Ricky Ortiz would come out on top, cementing her first-place finish with a ridiculous undefeated streak throughout the entire event. Along with Ortiz, Julio of Macro Micro Games, Pandora House’s own HooDaMan and LPN, and Kelvin Jeon of AVerMedia were selected as the very first A League participants due to their similarly high rankings in the final standings.

Of course, where there’s an upper league, there needs to be a lower league, right?

NorCal Fight Club’s B League will be comprised of the four players who just missed qualifying for A League (in this case bjUNCHAINED, El Cubano Loco of Macro Micro Games, Crackfiend, and Nando) as well as twelve new qualifiers. These up-and-comers will be decided at two separate qualifying events, the first of which is scheduled for this evening.

NorCal Fight Club League will begin in earnest starting January 9.

Tonight’s event is set to take place at Milpitas Golfland in Milpitas, California, starting at around 8 PM PST. A live stream will be provided by Pandora House for folks not able to attend in person, so be sure to tune in and catch all the action live.

Street Fighter V May Take Place After Street Fighter III

sfv-ryu-denjinhadouken-622-crop

(Special thanks to fiendmaw and Alex Sanchez for their keen eyes.)

Fighting game narratives can often be a mess to keep track of thanks to arcade modes that have to be padded with fights against various cast members and conflicting storylines. Most of the time, fans won’t find out which of the endings should be considered canon (a term that denotes official information in fictional universes) until a sequel or similar follow-up is released.

That being said, various details, like a character’s moveset or relationships with other fighters, can typically provide a good foundation for where a title falls in the franchise timeline before official word is released by the developer. Such is the case (maybe, possibly) with Street Fighter V.

By now, I’m sure pretty much all of you reading this have see the Street Fighter V teaser Capcom accidentally released earlier this morning; honestly, if you haven’t, please stop reading and go check it out now. While there wasn’t a whole lot of footage of the upcoming title, what was shown may shed some light on when it takes place in the series.

First, a quick history lesson. Street Fighter debuted back in 1987, introducing characters like Ryu, Ken, and Sagat to the world. A few years later, Capcom improved on that initial formula with Street Fighter II, expanding the cast even further and providing a continuation of Ryu’s journey.

Canonically, however, Street Fighter II wasn’t the very next game in line. Later on in the 90s, Capcom would begin a brand new Street Fighter series, denoting its place in the story with the Alpha subtitle. As such, minor characters from the first Street Fighter, namely Adon and Birdie, reappeared as playable characters.

Street Fighter III hit the scene near the end of the decade, but it would take Street Fighter IV’s release in 2008 for fans to find out the former takes place after the latter. Street Fighter IV’s closer proximity to Street Fighter II would be reflected not only in its story, but also in the way the game played, doing away with Street Fighter III’s parry system and super selections in favor of gameplay that more closely followed the original classic.

Still with me?

To put it simply, the official timeline looks something like this: Street Fighter – Street Fighter Alpha – Street Fighter II – Street Fighter IV – Street Fighter III.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the early gameplay footage included in the Street Fighter V teaser, starting with franchise poster boy Ryu.

Some of you may recognize the above attack as the Denjin Hadouken–the signature electricity should be a dead giveaway. A more powerful, chargeable version of the iconic fireball, this move is utilized by Gouken in Street Fighter IV, but Ryu has only had access to it in one game: Street Fighter III. This leads me to believe that the wandering warrior leveled up sometime between the two games, either on his own or with help from his former master.

But that’s not all. In addition to Ryu, the teaser also featured glimpses of Chun-Li, most notably another attack that has only made an appearance in Street Fighter III called the Tensei Ranka–at least a part of it. While the beginning is modified a bit (possibly a combo involving her Yoshokyaku headstomps), the unique airborne spin is very similar to the aforementioned super art.

At first, the Street Fighter V teaser may have seemed like a quick promo without much substance (apart from the beautiful tribute to the community, of course), but I think these two tiny bits of gameplay may just provide some hints as to when the title takes place in the universe of Capcom’s titular fighting franchise.

What do you think? Feel free to sound off in the comments.

Street Fighter V is Coming, Exclusive to PlayStation 4 and PC

UPDATE – You’ll find a mirror video below, along with some choice screenshots provided by MGS_WILL.

Awhile back, Capcom mentioned that they would be making announcements at Capcom Cup. Well, we now know what one of those announcement will most likely be, and it’s a big one–Street Fighter V is coming, exclusively to PlayStation 4 and PC.

Because of its restriction to one home console, it’s also likely this title was meant to be revealed at PlayStation Experience this weekend.

A teaser was posted early this morning, though it appears to have been a mistake, since the video is now private. We’ve included it below just in case it happens to go live again but, for now, feel free to go crazy in the comments.

Decapre Borrows Move from Fellow Bison Doll in Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Omega Mode

After weeks and weeks of detailed breakdowns, Capcom’s Tomoaki Ayano has one more Ultra Street Fighter IV character to describe Omega Mode changes for: Decapre.

A newcomer to the Street Fighter IV series, Decapre proved to be quite divisive when she was first revealed. While some were happy to see another Bison Doll finally become playable, others felt as if she was way to similar to Cammy to be considered a new character. Time proved that she brought a ton of new changes to the fighter she was cloned from, and her Omega version throws in a couple more curveballs.

Much like Dee Jay, this assassin will now function as a command character, forgoing her usual charge motions in order to give her quicker offense.

Invisible Ray

Decapre has also been given a fireball, though the level of strength you choose will be very important to its usefulness. While Invisible Ray’s start-up improves depending on which button you utilize, the recovery will lengthen as a trade-off. The EX version, on the other hand, comes out fast, covers ground quickly, hits twice, and knocks the opponent down.

Psycho Transaction

Her second new addition, Psycho Transaction, pulls inspiration from Juli’s Psycho Charge Beta in Street Fighter Alpha 3. This move allows Decapre to sacrifice a portion of her health for additional super and ultra meter, a high risk move that could pay dividends if utilized effectively.

Decapre’s resources will continue to exchange as long as you charge the move, leaving the possibility of recovering huge amounts of meter. Of course, she can still be knocked out, so you’ll have to be extra careful not to push your luck too far.

Ayano’s full descriptions for both of these moves can be found over on Capcom-Unity.

Tekken 7 Soft Launch Planned for February, Complete Release Heading to Arcades in March

tekken7-katarinaclaudio-622-crop

Although news broke that Tekken 7 would arrive in arcades next February a couple of months ago, it would appear that date wasn’t entirely correct.

During an interview with South Korean website CyFren, director Katsuhiro Harada relayed that Bandai Namco Games first plans to release a pre-launch version of the title in February before dropping the complete game in March of next year. This can be construed as a sort of beta release or soft launch on their part, which will allow them to hammer out the last few kinks left in the system before dropping cabs throughout Japan on a wide scale.

According to Avoiding the Puddle’s Flying Wonkey, who translated some of the more interesting pieces of the interview, Harada also stated that they are planning to include time-release cast members instead of outright cutting popular fighters from the cast.

Additionally, the longtime chief reiterated his desire to insert a female Korean character into the Tekken universe, though he feels fans in the region would much rather see a good-looking guy join Hwoarang and Baek as their country’s representatives. Work has yet to begin on this hypothetical addition, but Harada encourages players to provide feedback on Hwoarang’s transition to Tekken 7 in the meantime.

Taking this news in conjunction with Tekken 7 introducing the series’ first Italian fighter in newcomer Claudio and the possibility of an as of yet unnamed Arabian character also joining the mix, it would appear Harada is doing what he can to make sure our world’s diversity is properly represented in his fighting games.

For more details from this interview, be sure to check out CyFren if you can read Korean or head on over to Avoiding the Puddle for their translations.

Let SNK Playmore Know Which Classic Fighters You Want on PlayStation Network

samshoii-jubeihaohmaru-622-crop

This winter, SNK Playmore is planning to release a port of their classic side-scroller Metal Slug 3 on PlayStation Network. While this is all well and good, I’m sure many fans of their old-school fighters saw this news and wondered if some love may be extended to King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown.

Well, it looks like it just might.

In a PlayStation Blog article posted today, SNK Playmore’s Director of Business Development Adam Laatz was given the opportunity to directly approach the community and ask for their opinions on the matter. They will be gathering data through an online poll, which includes options for everything from other Metal Slug titles to SNK Football Championship.

That being said, fighters take up most of the list, namely Art of Fighting 2, Fatal Fury Special, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, King of Fighters ’97, King of Fighters 2000, The Last Blade 2, Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers, Samurai Shodown II, and Samurai Shodown V Special.

With a veritable smorgasbord of classic SNK goodness laid out in front of you, it may be hard to decide which to vote for, but feel free to visit the official poll and try your best.

It’s worth noting that, as tipster Jotamide pointed out to us, Samurai Shodown V Special has never been released outside of arcades, which means a good showing in this poll could result in its first appearance on home consoles. Extra incentive!
