Overwatch is in the news today with a pair of interesting stories. In one, a South Korean hacker was sentenced to a year in prison and two years probation for a cheating program that “violates the country’s Game Industry Promotion Law”. In the other, Blizzard has received an approved patent for a Play of the Game system after originally filing for it in 2016.
The Overwatch Twitter has a new teaser up that simply says, “Calm before the storm” that seems to be teasing either a new map or hero or perhaps both. The image shows a wall of graffiti that shows a large image of Lucio on one side, another saying 0 bots and yet another for “equal rights for Omnics”.
For those of us who love our game statistics all wrapped up in a shiny infographic, Blizzard is aiming to please. With the 2 year anniversary of Overwatch at hand, developers have put together a nifty infographic that touts 40M players, 6 new heroes, 15 new maps, 4 game modes and 6 seasonal events among other stats. This is a big week for Overwatch and Blizzard is pulling out all the stops. Starting today and running through June 11th, players can take part in the 2nd annual anniversary event that will bring 60 new anniversary items into the game as well as mark the return of 130 items from last year. In addition, the new Petra Deathmatch map is now live. But wait! That’s not all!
If you just can’t wait to see the Overwatch 2nd Anniversary skins, we’ve got good news: Due to a server glitch in Taiwan, all of the anniversary event skins leaked out. Doomfist, Moira and Brigitte will get new dance emotes since all three arrived after last year’s event. In addition, there are eleven new skins and the usual variety of sprays, voice lines, victory poses and more.
The Overwatch Facebook page has been updated with the amazing news that sales of the Mercy charity skin has raised nearly $10M benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Center. All proceeds from the sale of each $15 skin will be sent to the BCRC and Blizzard is hoping to top the $10M mark.
Over the past weekend, Overwatch Brazil leaked the initial details of the Overwatch Anniversary 2018. It’s now been “officially” revealed as coming with new cosmetics, a brand new brawl, the Petra Deathmatch map and will also see past brawls / cosmetics make a return. The event will run from May 22nd through June 11th.
Intrepid Redditors caught a video and made a couple of screen caps from the Brazilian Overwatch Twitter that inadvertently posted information about what’s coming in the game’s 2nd anniversary event. According to the screen caps and video, the event will begin on May 22nd and will feature an awesome looking Junkrat pirate skin.
Blizzard has partnered with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to sell a pink skin for Overwatch’s Mercy. The skin will cost $15 with 100% of the proceeds going to the charity. The skin will be on sale from May 8th to May 21st. Blizzard has other ways players can participate even in as simple a way as watching a Pink Mercy charity stream and unlocking icons and sprays.
Overwatch players can now start their journey to greatness thanks to the commencement of Competitive Season 10. There are no real changes to Season 10 other than the addition of Brigitte to the roster. Players of level 25+ can take part after completing ten placement matches and earning a slot in a skill bracket. Participants receive a special icon and spray for playing and those in the top 500 receive a second spray and icon. Golden Weapons are also back for purchase using Competitive Points.
