Learn to defend against Azrael and Tsubaki, BlazBlue’s “gorilla warfare” characters

New year, new me: me who no longer gets hit by dubious Azrael and Tsubaki mix-ups… or something like that. You know you’ve been salty about those characters at least once. Both of them have solid options in getting past blocking, so having detailed knowledge of their attack patterns is half the battle. Warui Neko-kun offers helpful, thorough videos that show plenty of options on how to deal with Azrael and Tsubaki.

The Azrael video is a bit situational, because many of the “solutions” require a Dragon Punch; either way, the video shows common attack strings and frequently tells the exact number of frames left to input an attack. Furthermore, the video shows pretty optimized Ragna punishes, though you’ll have to find your own for your main.

Tsubaki has wider gaps if she decides to go for her overhead, so it’s pretty feasible to hit her with a counter hit for a solid 4k damage combo. The gap is only very big if 5A preceded the overhead though, so the gap will be much smaller with a 5B. It’s best to anti-air Tsubaki’s new overhead, 22B or 22D. One of the harder things to counter is stagger pressure with her stance charge, 5D.

Study the videos above to arm yourself against the two brutes, and if you’ve been getting beat by Hibiki, Warui Neko-kun has also done a tutorial showing reacting against Hibiki.

“21 Hits” teaches you how Phase Shift points shape Pokkén Tournament DX’s Duel Phase

One of the foundations Pokkén Tournament DX’s Duel Phase is built on is also one of its biggest secrets: “Phase Shift points.” Getting into this game’s meta necessitates learning about what causes a Phase Shift, and since 21 Hits is named after one of those causes, they are uniquely prepared to teach this class:

Phase Shift Points, or PSP, are accumulated during the Duel Phase’s combos and pokes. Learning how to keep track — and manipulate — PSP will help you get the most out of the Duel Phase, and likely steal entire rounds off one or two resets.

Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 Venom combo movie challenges you to complete the Assassin trials

It takes a special kind of scientist to play Venom, probably the most calculated character in the Guilty Gear series. This holds true in REV 2, and there’s no better way to start out the new year than with some fresh challenges for the pool-playing fighter.

Sean English takes a bit more of an unusual take on the typical combo movie. His clip, titled “Assassin’s Assimilation,” takes advantage of REV 2‘s challenge record function. In between those challenges, English peppered the video with examples of full-screen carry set-ups, okizeme, and Burst punishes. Among some difficult Bishup Runout combos, there’s a couple of off-the-wall trials with the RISK gauge cranked up to max, and so on.

Check out the combo movie below, and let us know if you have had any success with replicating these challenges!

VesperArcade breaks down Chun-Li’s possible return to glory in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Chun-Li was one of the most heavily-hit characters in Street Fighter V Season 2, suffering a long list of nerfs that saw all but a select few abandon the character. Those players who once played her may find reason to come back to her, if the list of changes reported at the PlayStation Experience remain intact.

Alongside her second V-Trigger — which gives her better conversions off of her pokes  — she has received several changes, including the return of instant air leg combos and the inclusion of a Crush Counter state on forward roundhouse, all of which prove to make her more viable in the coming season.

Push the boundaries of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom with this unblockable exhibition from Truegamer2000

Once labelled the “perfectly balanced” Vs. title by its developers, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is about to get a shot in the arm, with the discovery of Baroque Unblockables. While characters like Yatterman-2 and PTX-40A have unblockable moves programmed into the game, these Baroque Unblockables allow for never-before-seen combo extensions and potential one-touch kills.

So how do you use a Baroque Unblockable? Based on Truegamer2000’s research, it involves entering Baroque Mode just as a character leaves hitstun and landing a jab straight after the Baroque Mode flash ends. Video creator Truegamer2000 doesn’t offer an explanation as to why the jab becomes unblockable — he just shows the applications of this new tech in various combos. All characters — besides the Giants — are capable of utilizing Baroque Unblockables, giving players a reason not use the massive fighters in tournament.

The combos Truegamer2000 shows off are proof of concepts more than anything, meaning there is plenty of room for experimentation for those still playing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. With Frosty Faustings X coming up at the end of this month and TvC having a significant presence at the event, expect some hot new tech in action as players trying to integrate Baroque Unblockables into their gameplan.

If this has inspired you to pick up Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, check out their Discord for regular netplay sessions and the latest research into Baroque Unblockables.

Possible BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle leaks could reveal the characters included in the next four Impacts

It’s looking like the next two months are going to absolutely huge for the upcoming BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle. With the BB quartet of Iron Tager, Makoto Nanaya, Nu-13, and Es being revealed during this month’s Arc Nama stream, a new playable build of the game being available at next month’s Evo Japan, and the Arc System Works Twitter account recently noting that there would be “Tons of news coming soon,” a recently-sprung leak could potentially come to fruition over the course of the next few months. Though, as always, these should be taken with a big grain of salt.

A 4chan poster claiming to be a member of the game’s localization team at the new Arc System Works North American branch — which will be publishing the title as the first game under their new umbrella — has decided to supposedly leak the next four character reveal Impacts taking place in January and February. According to them, the next sets of characters are as follows:

January 19th’s monthly Arc Nama stream announcements:

  • Hakumen
  • Kanji Tatsumi
  • Orie “Harada”

Evo Japan trailer announcements:

  • Jubei
  • Yuuki Terumi
  • Teddie
  • Tohru Adachi
  • Seth
  • Hilda

RTX Sydney announcements:

  • Platinum The Trinity
  • Bang Shishigami
  • Blake Belladonna

February 16th monthly Arc Nama stream reveals:

  • Valkenhayn R. Hellsing
  • Labrys
  • Merkava

They further claim that there will be an English dub for all characters, including the Under Night In-Birth cast (who have never previously had one before). Additionally, it is claimed that Rooster Teeth asked the American branch to abandon their plan of including BlazBlue‘s Relius Clover, as they were concerned they may add his Astral Heat to the game (even though Astrals/IKs are not currently present in the game right now), and they did not wish to see it performed on the RWBY characters. When specifically asked about Naoto Shirogane’s presence, the poster noted that, “The entire Investigation Team will make it in, I’m just giving what I know so far in terms of dates and announcements.”

Finally, they note that the team is currently expecting a September 2018 release for the game. Yang is still being worked on, and will be revealed at another RTX event, claiming that “the roster is going to be bigger than what most people expect,” and even gave what could be a few details about the game’s Story mode: “Story mode hasn’t been 100% finished, but so far, Es somehow causes each world to meet each other. Timeline-wise it takes place in an alternate version of Central Fiction‘s story, after Ultimax, somewhere in the middle of Under Night In-Birth‘s story and during Volume 3 of RWBY.

Though some of the development details could prove questionable, this is a very organized list, and by providing specific dates and characters in regards to upcoming reveals, we’ll be able to determine whether this leak lives or dies in just a couple of weeks. You can also see ASW YouTuber Koefficient’s thoughts on these developments below:

What are your thoughts on this leak? Would you like to see this group of characters make it in, or are you hoping for others? Let us know in the comments.

BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle will be released for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC sometime in 2018.

Take control of tricky situations with TheoryFighter’s new “Situationist” series

If you break down fighting games to their bare essentials, it involves dealing with various situations in rapid successions. Getting round an opponent’s projectile wall, confusing your enemy on wake-up, pressuring your foe with safe buttons: mastering fighting games involves learning how to not only create tricky situations, but how to escape them as well.

So, to help players deal with annoying situations in various fighting games, TheoryFighter has created a brand-new video series dedicated to this goal. For their first video, they have chosen how to deal with Hulk’s Gamma Charge and its various follow-ups in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

Hulk can leave a big delay between the initial Gamma Charge and its follow-up, meaning over-eager players can get frame-trapped by this move. By looking at the different directions and timings Hulk can use, this guide should give you an answer for any situation the big green lummox puts you in.

Panda Global kick off the fourth edition of their Smash 4 player ranking

It’s ranking season in the world of Super Smash Bros., as both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U are getting new editions of their world player rankings. With MIOM managing the Melee Top 100, it’s Panda Global who manage Smash 4, with the Panda Global Rankings or PGR for short.

Version 4 of the PGR has made some substantial changes since Version 3, dropping of the written portion of the rankings, as well as commentary in their video roundups. The PG Stats team has clearly been inspired by the Japanese Power Rankings, even hiring the videographer behind the last Japanese PR — Kud — to produce this year’s roundups. The change in style does benefit the format immensely, as it focuses more on raw data and top performances by each player, while showing clips from certain matches and stand-out performances.

Similar to SSBMRank, expect the rest of the PGR v4 to be uploaded ahead of Genesis 5, so esports teams can snatch up any free agents ahead of the Smash community’s first major for 2018.

VesperArcade discusses the changes to Balrog in Street Fighter: V Arcade Edition

With less than three weeks before we see Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition out in the wild, speculation continues on what the changes will bring about in the game’s meta. This time, VesperArcade sets his sights on Balrog, discussing some of the changes brought to the boxer.

In this video, he talks about the new command grab that Balrog has in V-Trigger II, which deals 33% stun and a low amount of damage. He also talks about how his nerfs to his target combo when blocked and cancelled into V-Trigger may be directly affected by his second V-Trigger.
