UFC champion Demetrious Johnson talks with Body Count Fighting on developing a career in sports and esports

The first and current UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson stopped by the Body Count Fighting studios to play Marvel vs Capcom:Infinite and talk about his career in both the UFC and on Twitch.

Equal parts interview and play session, Demetrious professes his love of leveling up against the competition, which is good since he’s playing against MvC:I Pro”Priest”. But, it’s his experience and parallels between competing in traditional sports and esports that really elevate this interview. Demetrious drops some valuable insight on the balance between competitive skill versus branding: “The hardest thing for some streamers is that they’re good at games, but they aren’t personable.”

Tekken 7: Fated Retribution gets new NJPW content, adds Tanahashi outfit, Rage Art, and BGM for Lars

Did you buy Tekken 7 solely for the New Japan Pro Wrestling collaboration? If so, you may have thought their cross-promotion was going to begin and end with the Bullet Club costumes and King’s Kazuchika Okada outfit.

Well, that’s not the case. Tekken 7: Fated Retribution is getting a title update that adds a new Hiroshi Tanahashi outfit and “Rage Art” for Lars Alexandersson. Lars’s new “Rage Art” is Tanahashi’s signature “Sling Blade” finisher, and every time you pick Tanahashi’s outfit you’ll hear his “LOVE&ENERGY” theme song. There’s also some new Bullet Club Shirts in the update for various cast members, as well as Tanahashi-themed player cards.

The title update will hit arcades on November 18th. While there is no official date set for consoles, we do still have two DLC characters to go. Perhaps Lars Tanahashi will be  packaged with Geese’s arrival? We won’t know until a further announcement, but until then: Go Ace!

TEKKEN TRAINING: Electric Wind God Vids — Ranking Sidewalk

Electric Wind God Vids is back with a quick stress test to the cast’s sidewalk ability in Tekken 7.

It is important to understand that sidewalk and sidestep fundamentally behave differently, and one may be preferable to the other depending upon the character you play. Always make sure you test your own character’s evasion options versus the situation you’re having trouble with in training mode. If you’re still a little cloudy on how evasion works in Tekken, be sure to check out our step tutorial video here.

BlaQ_NYC offers some help on training good “robotic” elements in your gameplay

Better-trained habits will benefit your overall game.

In playing a game that is as complex and fast-paced as a fighting game, the actions you perform can be categorized into two types: “robotic” actions, and “human” actions. The robotic refers to automatic processes — also called muscle memory — that need to be performed faster than you can typically think about, and are usually learned through repetition to become habit. The human component refers to the thinking elements of play — strategy, approach, and reading or training you opponent.

In the video below, BlaQ_NYC discusses these elements using Street Fighter V as an example, and offers some tips on how to train good “robotic” habits.

Learn all about Yoshi’s crazy shield properties in Super Smash Bros. Melee

In a previous installment, SSBM Tutorials dealt with the options Yoshi has by using his shield parry. However, with such a unique shield as Yoshi’s in Super Smash Bros. Melee — giving him an egg to shield himself, rather than the usual orb — there has to be more to it.

In this video, SSBM Tutorials goes over nearly everything about Yoshi’s shield. They discuss some of the positives — including his ability to store power shields — and negatives, such as the possibility to get punished out of his roll.

Strike fear in your opponents with these Susano’o combos in BlazBlue: Central Fiction

Susano’o didn’t make as much of a splash in BlazBlue: Central Fiction initially, despite an important role in Story Mode. Though the scary god has a terrifying — if somewhat inaccessible, arsenal of power — the 1.0 version of Susano’o felt severely limited in its potential. That’s the thing, actually: Susano’o is unique in that his special moves are locked behind his drive, and slowly unveil over the course of a match.

Things are somewhat different in 2.0, and the most noticeable change is damage. Having even one move unlocked can lead to almost 4000 damage in a midscreen combo, something unreachable for most characters without a very good starter. For example, a counter hit from the unlocked sword move can lead to 4.2-4.8k damage depending on spacing on the screen.

Susano’o is more explosive than ever, and Meno shows it in yet another BlazBlue: Central Fiction combo video with useful notation. The later sections use the Heat gauge and Overdrive to really ramp up the damage.

Don’t forget to check out some Jubei combo videos, if you’re looking to learn the newest CF character.

Pin opponents to the wall with this beginner’s combo guide for Tekken 7’s Leo

It’s true for any character in Tekken 7 that learning optimal combos is important for long-term success. Leo exemplifies this in a particular way: learning their best wall carry combos is vital not just for damage, but for setting up your best mix-ups.

Since Leo has one of the most dominate wall mix-ups in the game, you have to get them to the wall first. Ideally you’d want to do that with as much damage as possible, and that’s where Scallywag 93‘s beginners combo guide comes into play. These combos will help you carry opponents to the wall, score big damage off splats, and setup your endgame 50/50s. These are also categorized by difficultly, so if you have trouble with a particular combo, you can move on to something else until you’re ready!
