Naoki Hamaguchi On Bringing Final Fantasy Back To Nintendo

Final Fantasy VII Revelation

When Final Fantasy debuted in 1987, it did so on the Famicom (and later the NES in 1990), and Nintendo platforms would play host to the franchise all the way up until Final Fantasy VII. That pivotal entry was not only the series’ transition to 3D graphics, but it also spelled the franchise’s move to PlayStation as its primary platform. While some future entries would eventually arrive on other platforms, the mainline series has largely ignored Nintendo consoles outside of some side titles and spin-offs. Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that a multi-part remake of the very game that signaled the shift away from Nintendo, Final Fantasy VII, is the very trilogy that is giving Nintendo fans more hope regarding the future of the franchise on its platform.

It all began earlier this year, as Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, an upgraded version of the first part of the Remake Trilogy, arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 in January. Then, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, part two of the trilogy, came to Switch 2 earlier this very month. Finally, during the 2026 Summer Game Fest live show, Remake Trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi took the stage to close out the show, announcing that Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final part, would arrive simultaneously across all major platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2, when it arrives in the first half of 2027.

Game Informer

For Naoki Hamaguchi, the return to Nintendo through a remake of the game that originally moved the franchise away to PlayStation in the first place is fitting. “I think it’s definitely a meaningful moment for the franchise and for fans as a whole,” he says. “I was definitely a PlayStation kid when I was growing up playing games, but at the same time, I was also fond of the Nintendo hardware as well. The original FF7 is a very iconic title that represents the transition from Nintendo to PlayStation, but bringing that back and going with the multiplatform launch on day one with this title is very meaningful to me. I know it means a lot for [original director Yoshinori] Kitase and [original artist and writer Tetsuya] Nomura, as well – people who actually grew up with the Nintendo platforms. But it means a lot to me to be the one who actually brings the Final Fantasy series back on Nintendo platforms again on day one as both a fan and developer. I think this a meaningful full-circle moment.”

Interestingly enough, from Hamaguchi’s perspective, Japanese fans are much less accepting of games going multiplatform. “One thing I do want to be mindful of is the cultural different between the Western fans and the Japanese fans,” he says. “When you look at the Western fans, particularly the North American fans and European fans, they welcome the multiplatform approach with a more positive attitude. But when you look at the Japanese fans, they tend to have a little bit of a negative behavior towards it, and they post their stronger opinions online with that particular approach, so I do have to be mindful of the cultural difference there. But if we do continue to take this approach, launching multiplatform on day one, I think this approach would be accepted more globally.”

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Announces Dark Arisen Expansion, Adding New Areas, Dungeons, And Cosmetics This October

Game Informer

Dragon’s Dogma 2, a challenging, friction-filled fantasy adventure from Capcom, was one of my favorite games back in 2024. Today, during Nintendo’s big summer Direct, we learned that the game is coming to Switch 2. What was less clear from the Direct’s trailer, however, is that the Switch 2 version is actually Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, an updated release of the game that will come bundled with the Dark Arisen expansion. That expansion is also coming as paid DLC to every other console the game is currently on, and you can see the trailer for it below:

Dark Arisen’s main selling point are the frozen lands of Norgan, a new icy area to the far north that players can explore for powerful relics, which can be appraised to unlock new gear and skills. The expansion also adds 12 new dungeon challenges and new hair and tattoo options to customize players and their pawns.

There are also free updates on the way for the base game, and according to the new trailer’s video description, the first one arrives today. “The first arrives June 9 with quality-of-life improvements, including the addition of an Eternal Ferrystone and more Portcrystals,” it reads. “A second update in August brings framerate and performance improvements to all platforms, additional save slots, and many more adjustments and improvements.” The Eternal Ferrystone sounds like it will remove some of the fast travel restrictions that put people off from the base game, even though I think friction makes the game better, I don’t mind an update that might welcome new players.

Dragon’s Dogma II: Dark Arisen is out four months from today, on October 9, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X.S, PC, and Switch 2, and if you pre-order the game, you’ll get access to the Northern Attire fashion set. For more Dragon’s Dogma, check out our review of the base game.

Final Fantasy Resonance Is An HD-2D RPG Based On Brave Exvius Dropping This October

Game Informer

Final Fantasy Resonance was revealed during today’s Nintendo Direct, and brings the HD-2D art style, popularized by the Octopath Traveler games, to Square Enix’s flagship franchise. The game comes out October 22, and you can check out its reveal trailer below.

While it looks like a completely new story to the unfamiliar, it’s actually an adaptation of the story and world from the first arc of Brave Exvius, a Final Fantasy-themed mobile game that was shuttered last year. It brought players on a typical Final Fantasy adventure (complete with chocobos and airships), and included appearances from characters like Cloud, Tidus, and other iconic heroes from the series’ history.

In a press release about the game, however, Square Enix asserts that the experience is not quite a port or remaster. “Far from just a direct port, [Resonance] has been refined and extensively rebuilt as a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience,” it reads. Our friends at IGN have played the game already, and clarify the difference a little further in their preview.

While it was specifically announced in a Nintendo Direct, when Final Fantasy Resonance comes out on October 22, it will also be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Splatoon Raiders Is Getting A Nintendo Direct Later This Month, New Gameplay Trailer Released

Game Informer

We’re just a few weeks away from the launch of Splatoon Raiders, the Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive PvE Splatoon spin-off, and we got another look at it during today’s Nintendo Direct. Launching July 23, today’s Splatoon Raiders trailer highlights more of the third-person shooter gameplay players can expect in the game.

Plus, Nintendo has announced it will host a Splatoon Raiders Nintendo Direct on June 30. It also revealed that in the Nintendo Today app, you can see the Splatoon story events leading up to Raiders with daily comics ahead of launch. There will also be a Splatoon Raiders Splatfest in July.

Check it all out in the latest Splatoon Raiders trailer below:

In Splatoon Raiders, players will control a customizable Inkling mechanic who travels to a new setting called the Spirhalite Islands alongside Deep Cut, the trio of musicians from Splatoon 3. There, your mechanic and Deep Cut will fight off the villainous Salmonids using familiar paint-based weapons like guns, brushes, and more. Nintendo calls the game a “single-player-focused” Splatoon experience, but you can also play with up to three other players in online co-op.

Nintendo previously announced that when Splatoon Raiders launches on July 23, it will do so alongside three new Amiibo – Raiders versions of Shiver, Big Man, and Frye – and you can check them out in the image below:

Splatoon Raiders launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on July 23.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Remake Of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Drops In 2026

Game Informer

After years of rumors, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is officially officially getting a remake for Nintendo Switch 2 and it is coming in 2026, sometime later this year.

Ocarina of Time was originally released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64. The game was a critical and commercial success and is often cited as one the best reviewed games of all time, so the fervor for a remake is not unexpected.

The new trailer is minimal, beginning with a voice over from an unknown narrator giving a rundown on the Kokiri, who Link lives amongst at the start of the game. Each child has a fairy, but there’s one boy who doesn’t have a fairy of his own. The trailer then fades to a young, sleeping Link, who you can see in the image below. He stirs in his sleep, a Triforce symbol glows on his hand, and a modern logo for Ocarina of Time appears on the screen. Despite not seeing much more than that, the game is due to launch in 2026.

This, of course, is not the first time Ocarina of Time has been re-released following its initial launch. Ahead of the release of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in 2002, Nintendo offered reservation customers a pair of GameCube discs that contained a port of Ocarina of Time as well as the not-released-in-North America Master Quest, which rearranged the puzzles in Ocarina of Time. There was also The Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition, a GameCube game compilation that included The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Ocarina of time, Majora’s Mask, and a demo for Wind Waker.

Ocarina of Time was also made available on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Consoles, and the game is currently available for Switch and Switch 2 as part of the Nintendo Online subscription service.

Game Informer

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (2011)

The game has been ported to nearly every Nintendo platform since its original release, but this will actually be the second time Ocarina of Time has been fully remade. In 2011, Ocarina of Time was rebuilt for the 3DS with updated visuals, motion controls, and stereoscopic 3D visuals by developer Grezzo. That version of the game also included Master Quest.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on 2026. For more on today’s Direct, check out the news about Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, and the new Pokopia update.

Kingdom Hearts IV Gameplay Trailer Revealed, Will Launch Simultaneously On Consoles And PC

Kingdom Hearts IV

The last time we got a trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV was in 2022. In the years since, fans have been clamoring for more information about the highly anticipated sequel, poring through screenshots and more for any glimmer of new details. Perhaps surprising everyone, Kingdom Hearts IV appeared during today’s Nintendo Direct with a new gameplay trailer that also revealed it will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Unfortunately, this trailer didn’t say when that launch will be, so the wait continues. But this new trailer has plenty to look at, including gameplay in modern-day Tokyo, featuring a new look at the game’s action combat in Shibuya. In it, we see a more realistic take on Sora fighting off Heartless in the city, and it looks awesome.

Check out the new Kingdom Hearts IV teaser trailer for yourself below:

Kingdom Hearts IV is currently in development and set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. While the Nintendo Direct version of the trailer didn’t reveal these additional platforms the game is in development for, the teaser trailer posted on the official Square Enix YouTube channel (the one we’ve linked above) does, indicating a simultaneous launch.

In the meantime, check out the Kingdom Hearts IV reveal trailer

Deltarune Chapter 5 Launches Later This Month

Game Informer

The fifth chapter of Deltarune launches on June 24 and it will be free for those who have already purchased the game. The date and footage of the chapter was revealed during the Summer Game Fest-adjacent Nintendo Direct, but it is safe to assume the chapter will come to other platforms on that date, as well.

Creator Toby Fox previously said, “You only have to buy the game once – upcoming Chapters will be added as free updates. That’s not factored into the cost, though. I only feel right charging for what there currently is, not what I say there will be. Therefore, this $24.99 to me represents the exact price of 4 chapters!”

The Duskbloods, A Nintendo Switch 2 Exclusive RPG From Elden Ring Developer From Software, Gets Closed Network Test This Summer

The Duskbloods From Software Nintendo Switch 2

Elden Ring developer From Software revealed The Duskbloods, a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, last year. Since then, fans have been waiting for an update, and today’s Nintendo Direct brought a small slice of news. From Software and Nintendo have revealed that sometime this Summer, a “closed network test” for The Duskbloods will be held.

It revealed this test with a quick new look at The Duskbloods, featuring a trailer that highlights more of this mysterious, medieval world. While there’s still no word on when to expect the game, it’s set to launch sometime in 2026, so a closed network test this Summer suggests it might still be on track for that.

The trailer is not yet live on YouTube yet, but Game Informer will add it to this story when it is~

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Brings Wii Sports Games To Switch 2 This October

Game Informer

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort was just announced during Nintendo’s big summer Direct, and it looks like the exact revival of the Wii Sports era I’ve been waiting for. Switch sports dropped o the original Switch a few years ago, but it had so few games that it felt underbaked; Nintendo Switch Sports Resort revealed 12 events right out the gate, including the return of the plane you can use to explore Wuhu Island, and that’s exactly what I was hoping for.

Even better, the game was revealed alongside a release date: October 22. Check out some screens below to get an idea of the gameplay.

Here are the events revealed so far:

  • Archery
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Skateboarding
  • Power Cruising (on a jet ski!)
  • Thumb Wrestling
  • Prop Plane
  • Boxing
  • Golf
  • Jump Rope (this isn’t technically a sport – just a warm-up)
  • Volleyball
  • Bowling
  • Basketball

Each game uses 1-2 Joy Con 2s, and either relies on motion controls or, in the case or something like skateboarding, mouse controls. When you play the game, you can pick between a Sportsmate, a newer style of customizable character introduced in Switch Sports, or a traditional Mii, if you want that classic (dare I say retro) Wii Sports vibe. Given the recent success of Tomodachi Life, I expect most players will lean that way anyways.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort comes out on October 22, later this year. For more Switch Sports, check out our review of the last entry. for more Nintendo Direct, read about the new Fire Emblem game (which also got a release date) and the upcoming Pokopia update.
