Watch Some of Japan’s Best Smashers in This Highlight Video from Sumabato Tokaigi Qualifier

While most eyes are trained upon the USA when it comes to discussing Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Japan’s scene is as exciting when it comes to tournaments, with tons of upsets and lesser known players coming out of hiding to take large events.

At the moment, the Japanese scene is captivated by the Tokaigi 2017 qualifiers, a series of events which is leading up to the NicoNico Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Championships, which will be held in February at Tokaigi 2017. Winners of select events will be invited to compete in this final showdown, where one player will be made champion. 2016’s event saw LG|Abadango take the crown but with the talent pool in Japan growing ever stronger, 2017’s Championship looks to be a close one.

The most recent qualifier was Sumabato’s Tokaigi event, which saw players like Ranai, DNG|Nietono, Earth, HIKARU and You3 battling for those three qualifying spots for Tokaigi 2017. Those spots eventually went to DNG|Kameme, who played a grand total of six characters on his journey to qualification, Japan’s greatest Olimar Shuton and ikep, widely regarded as Japan’s greatest Bayonetta and fresh off a win at Karisuma 11.

If you were unable to catch the qualifier, check out these highlights from Tetra and gander at the translated Challonge page to see the gauntlet players had to conquer for those three positions.

Enterprising Fans Play Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at the Rockefeller Center in New York

Fans of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are some of the most active and passionate ones around. They’ve helped keep the game alive through the years, despite all the odds.

To show just how passionate fans can get–and to demonstrate the draw the Marvel Vs. franchise still has–the folks at Untechable Performance teamed up with Game Abroad, to set up and play Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in the middle of the Rockefeller Center in New York.

Aside from answering the question “When’s Marvel” (anytime, as long as you have the equipment for it), the set up does actually draw a small crowd of people watching, including some who have passing familiarity of the franchise.

Hellgate – Multiplayer Team – This is a Passion Project

The latest Hellgate multiplayer project, London 2038, developer diary has been published. In it, the team discusses what it has been working on over the last several weeks including making the pre-alpha more stable. Several significant bugs have yet to be worked out before the game goes into full alpha. Of particular note, however, is the monetization, or in this case lack of one, that will be utilized when London 2038 goes live.
