Mahjong Parlor to Pro Tour: Red Bull Looks at Bonchan’s Entry into the World of Competitive Fighting Games

Every player within the fighting game community has their origin story. Everyone has that moment where they decided that they wanted to pick up fighting games, and not just play them casually, but compete in them.

In a new episode of their eSports Unfold series, Red Bull takes a look at one such “origin story,” that of Masato Takahashi, or Bonchan as the community at large knows him.

Starting out as an employee at a Mahjong parlor, Bonchan had the sheer luck of having none other than Daigo Umehara as a co-worker. Meeting and eventually forming a friendship with Daigo, bonding over Street Fighter and eventually training together gave Bonchan the spark that lit the fire that would help him become one of the game’s top players.

Interestingly enough however, even just starting out, Daigo states that Bonchan was already good enough to surprise him whenever they’d play at the arcade after work. Future Street Fighter star discovered by a fighting game legend on hiatus–it’s almost something out of a Hollywood movie, and it shows just how interesting and diverse these players’ origin stories can be.

Of course, that’s just part of the mini documentary. Head on over to Red Bull eSports for the rest.
