Learn how to shield like a pro in this tutorial for Super Smash Bros. Melee

While defensive options are something that can always frustrate players in traditional fighting games–given the aggressive nature of the games themselves–Super Smash Bros. Melee’s defensive options can be even more mentally taxing on a newer player. Instead of blocking in the traditional sense, Smash games require you to hold up a shield, which can be depleted and broken. To top it off, as a shield depletes, it can leave various hurtboxes on your character vulnerable to attack as they are uncovered by the receding shield.

There are ways to mitigate this, which are covered in this tutorial. It goes over shield tilting, which allows you to move your shield into a more vulnerable part of your body that you expect to be hit. It also discusses shield DI, which changes the direction of the pushback of a shielded move, as well as post-shielding options.

Relive the action of NYU Spring Fighter 2017 with these replays from Team Spooky

Earlier this month, the New York University Game Center in Brooklyn held its eighth-annual Spring Fighter event, featuring fierce local competition in The King Of Fighters XIV, Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- and, of course, Street Fighter V. This event would mark one of the first times we would see KOF XIV’s new DLC characters in action, following their introduction in the game’s recent version 2.00 update. And the victor in SFV gets an all-expenses-paid trip to Evolution 2017, courtesy of the NYU Game Center–just as DaFeetLee won last year.

Though the dust may have recently settled on the event, Arturo Sanchez has you covered–as he has begun uploading all of the streamed matches onto the Team Spooky YouTube Channel for your viewing pleasure. Today, we bring you the top 4 of KOF XIV and Xrd -REVELATOR-, in addition to the top 8 of SFV—along with some assorted matches from Pools.

Javits’ Street Fighter V #1throw1comboDIZZY challenge has resulted in some amazing videos

Javits Arias made something of a name for himself, with his recent open challenge for Street Fighter V players to find ways to take out Akuma in a mere two combos. Now, he’s following that up with another open challenge: #1throw1comboDIZZY asks players to find ways to stun their opponents with a sequence that starts with 1 throw, leading into 1 combo.

Javits’ original tweet also came with his personal submission, which is a sequence featuring Balrog going in on Akuma.

A number of players have now risen up in response to the challenge, putting up some amazing sequences and combos. For example: this Urien sequence on Akuma by VX Aeon is worthy of a combo video all on its own.

Meanwhile, Foxx demonstrates that Urien doesn’t need a character with low stun like Akuma to pull the challenge off, showcasing this sequence against Ryu.

Meanwhile, KhnumXD makes good use of Ibuki’s bomb in this relatively simple sequence against Birdie.

Rizhall gets into the action with this sequence for Ryu against Zangief. Here, he uses a backthrow to put Zangief in the corner and set up the combo.

Meanwhile, L33pfr0g shows that newcomer Kolin can also contribute to this challenge, not only getting the stun, but freezing them in the process.

Another Kolin sequence comes from Baroque Obama, this time on Ken who has higher stun than Cammy from the previous video.

Not to be outdone by other players, Javits has returned with a couple more videos, one with Balrog again, going up against Urien (who has higher stun rating compared to Akuma), and another with Birdie against Cammy.
