Get acquainted with Hutizul and Rikuo in the latest episodes of The Nostalgic Gamer’s “Meet The Darkstalkers” series

After an 11-month absence, The Nostalgic Gamer has finally returned with new episodes of his “Meet The Darkstalkers” series. Part of the “Darkstalkers Forever” project, each episode of the series sees The Nostalgic Gamer take an in-depth look at one of the series’ colorful cast members, examining the initial ideas behind their creation and design by the Darkstalkers development team.

The two newest episodes focus on Hutizul — or Phobos in Japan — the robotic protector, and Rikuo, known as Aulbath in Japan, the curiously attractive fishman. Previous episodes have chronicled Morrigan Aensland, Demitri Maximoff, Felicia, Hsien-Ko, B.B. Hood, John Talbain, Anakaris, Lord Raptor, Bishamon, Donnovan & Anita and Victor von Gerdenheim. Since it’s been 20 years since the release of the last mainline game, Darkstalkers 3 or Vampire Savior, these videos serve as a fantastic reminder of the creativity and charm of Street Fighter‘s “sister series,” the legacy of which still lives on to this very day.

For more Darkstalkers history, you can check out The Nostalgic Gamer’s near-hour-long retrospective on the entire series here.

Panda Global’s SKD and D-Link’s Lord Knight provide more BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle impressions from NYCC

Last weekend’s New York Comic Con saw the “1st Impact” of Arc System Work’s new crossover tag-team fighting title, BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle. We’ve already shared some player impressions, including some thoughts from Panda Global’s SKD, but now we return with SKD’s wrap-up — along with some impressions from another top ASW player, D-Link’s Lord Knight.

To summarize the massive TwitLonger post, SKD highlighted the following bullet points.

  • No 6X normals, with the only Crouching normals for each character being 4A. 4B and 4C attacks do not exist.
  • Cross Combo input is to tap or hold the button while an Assist is out, with a bar at the bottom of the screen filling as your prepare the Assist character to attack. Your full Cross Gauge will drain if the character is hit, and they will leave the battlefield.
  • Game seems setplay oriented, but with the strength of Reflect Guard and Cross Bursts in the current iteration, SKD doesn’t how much it would be used.
  • Cross Burst Safe combos exist and cost your entire Cross Gauge. You can only Burst when it’s full.
  • All Specials are either QCF or QCB, all Distortion Skills cost two bars, with EX Specials only costing one. Crash Assaults only cost one bar, and are done by pressing the Tag button during the initial Distortion animation.
  • All Crash Assault Supers are pre-determined. (Yu’s will always be Cross Slash, Ragna’s will always be Devoured By Darkness, Hyde and Linne will use their Infinite Worths, etc.)
  • Switching characters is very strong and can lead to long combos.
  • Resonance Levels are obtained by filling the four squares next to the Distortion Meter, which is accomplished by utilizing aspects of the Cross System that fully deplete the Cross Gauge, and cannot be filled by simply calling Assists. Levels increase Resonance Blaze duration when it becomes available.
  • Resonance Blaze provides health regeneration, increased damage on Distortion Drives (that can now lead to Resonance Finishes), passive meter gain and allows you to Distortion Cancel Specials. The meter limit is also broken, similar to Persona 4 Arena‘s Awakening mechanic.
  • Incoming attacks are character-specific, invulnerable, cannot be Counter hit or punished, but are possibly negative on block.
  • Anti-Airs use BlazBlue‘s Attribute System.
  • Feels it’s to easy to Time Out solo characters, even when they have Resonance.

As for Lord Knight, he preferred to spend his time with BBTAG’s sole New Challenger: Ruby Rose. You can check out his thoughts in this Evernote.

SKD was also able to snap a few photos of the title’s control layout and mechanic explanations from the show floor.

Demon King Dabura and Majin Buu (Gohan Absorbed) show their power in a Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 gameplay trailer

Just because Dragon Ball FighterZ is on the horizon with the Spirit Hypebomb gathering energy at a rapid pace, doesn’t mean that Bandai Namco Entertainment is neglecting its current Dragon Ball title. Last month, we reported that — even though the game’s Season Pass offerings have long since ended — Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 would be receiving an additional pair of fighters on the roster: the Majin Buu Saga’s Demon King Dabura and Majin Buu (Gohan Absorbed,) the form Super Buu took after absorbing the powers of Gotenks, Piccolo and Mystic Gohan within himself. These two will be joining the game’s playable roster as part of DLC Pack 5, which will also include a new Mentor in the form of Dragon Ball Super’s dark Supreme Kai, Zamasu.

In this trailer, we can see the two pummeling Vegito and Adult Gohan with a variety of their signature attacks, including the Demon King’s Stone Breath and legendary sword skills. In contrast, Super Buu utilizes his personal version of Gotenks’s Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack, as well as the Kamehameha Wave, and his uniquely stretchy anatomy to command throw and pummel his foes from great distances. No release date has been given for this content — though the new Z Warriors are expected to join the battle sometime this fall, and have also been confirmed to be paid DLC. However, additional free content will also be arriving at some point. You can see the full trailer below.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam PC and Nintendo Switch.

Sharpen your Wolf Fang Fist with the currently-known anime and manga references for Yamcha in Dragon Ball FighterZ

After creating some character concept videos for Dragon Ball Super’s Hit, Beerus, Goku Black, and Zamasu, IKevinX is back with another video going over the currently-known anime and manga references for one of Dragon Ball FighterZ newly-announced cast members, the Desert Bandit, Yamcha.

With the latest fighters currently unavailable to the public, and only a short character reveal trailer and a bit of gameplay footage from Game Informer to go on, IKevinX notes that their are several things missing from the video — such as Yamcha’s victory and intro animations, Ki attacks, as well as crouching and jumping attacks — but he wanted to make a video anyway for the sake of getting caught up in giving his energy to the Spirit Hypebomb.

As a good portion of Yamcha’s key relevancy comes from the earliest points in the overall series, a majority of his attacks and animations have been lifted from the original Dragon Ball, as well as some originals attacks from Xenoverse 2 and a few other past Dragon Ball fighting games. You can see the full video below!

You can see his other videos for the remaining announced cast members at the following links:

Dragon Ball FighterZ will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam PC in February 2018.

See Spider-Man become “Superior” in this Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite premium costume trailer

With Spider-Man: Homecoming recently receiving its digital release, fans of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite may want to consider grabbing the film from the PlayStation Store or Xbox Live Marketplace, as it will come bundled with the web head’s wave 1 premium DLC costume. It allows Peter Parker to don the look of the “Superior Spider-Man,” from a time when Doctor Octopus took over his body in the comics, compete with the extra appendages.

We’ve shown you the suit’s alternate colors (Spider-Gwen, Superior Venom, and the Iron Spider), but now Marvel and Capcom are ready to show it off in action with a trailer — just as they did with both the PlayStation 4-exclusive Major Carol Danvers and deluxe edition-exclusive Command Mission X, Evil Ryu, Warrior Thor, and Gladiator Hulk costumes, which you can see below.

For those who don’t wish to purchase the MCU’s latest film, the outfit will eventually be sold individually for $3.99.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam PC. Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently available via digital download, and will be released on Blu-Ray October 17th.

Raiden will be banned for the entirety of the ELEAGUE Injustice 2 World Championships; including Last Chance Qualifier

Yesterday,  ELEAGUE announced its latest ruling for the upcoming Injustice 2 World Championships. Despite protecting Earthrealm for centuries, this will be one event that the god of thunder Raiden will be unable to participate in.

Releasing earlier this week as part of Fighter Pack 2 and in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Mortal Kombat, Raiden will officially be banned from the entirety of ELEAGUE, including the event’s Last Chance Qualifiers. This is common practice regarding the usage of new DLC characters in competitive circuits, as players may have not had adequate time to prepare for the match-up and game-breaking bugs may still exist for newer characters.

The ELEAGUE Injustice 2 World Championship will begin on October 21st, with a Last Chance Qualifier event to determine the last two members of the bracket of the 16 best players of the game today, as they battle for supremacy in Group Play later this month. You can find full details on the LCQ here.
