The Playoff Picture: Who Has Made it Into Capcom Cup 2016?

With only a handful of events still to go, we are nearing a fully fleshed-out bracket for Capcom Cup. While it is not yet set in stone, The Daily Dot has compiled a list on who is in, and who is just barely sitting on the bubble for the event.

Currently guaranteed-in are the likes of Seon-woo “Infiltration” Lee, Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi, Bruce “Gamerbee” Hsiang, Arman “Phenom” Hanjani, Zhuojun “Xiaohai” Zeng, Yusuke Momochi, Justin Wong, Keita “Fuudo” Ai, Du “NuckleDu” Dang, Julio Fuentes, Thomas “Brolynho” Proenca, Felipe “Misterio” Torres, Olivier “Luffy” Hay, and Younes “CCL” Lazaar. Currently in good standings include Daigo Umehara, Kun “Xian” Ho, Hiroyuki “Eita” Nagata, Ryan “FChamp” Ramirez, Joe “MOV” Egami, Nathan “Mister Crimson” Massol, Ricki Ortiz, and Kenryo “Mago” Hayashi.

The most important one to look at is the bubble, which includes Miky “XSK_Samurai” Chea, Chris Tatarian, Benjamin “Problem X” Simon, and many others who have been fighting hard to have a banner year.

The Consouls Mellow Out the Main Theme of Super Smash Bros. Melee

Just in time for The Big House 6, The Counsouls are back with another smooth styling from the video game vaults. This time, they are taking on the fierce, in-your-face theme of Super Smash Bros. Melee. Usually intensely trumpeting through your CRT televisions with triumph, this jazz cover of the theme instead whispers a calming, cool feeling through your speakers.

Already known for a long list of covers, including Ken’s theme, The Consouls are definitely stepping it up a notch. It is interesting to hear their calm, mature takes on the game music we grew up with.

Grappler Battle as Wolfkrone Takes On GiefKid in This Exciting Street Fighter V Set

Laura is a grappler match-up that requires a lot of hard reads and mental endurance, as the swings involved in the match-up can be difficult to deal with. Once one character scores a knockdown, it becomes a battle of making the right read to not get stuck in mix-ups for the entirety of the round.

When you pit two of the best of each character up against each other, this rings even further true. So when GiefKid faces off against Wolfkrone in a best of 5 set, the results are a lot of high-level reads and excruciatingly lopsided rounds. Watch both players work their way into proper spacing and score knockdowns to try to finish each off quickly in this high octane set.

Evil Geniuses’ Justin Wong has always been fast to adapt his play to various styles and characters. Thus, it should come as no shock to anyone that when he sets his sights on Urien, his traditionally turtling, defensive style becomes more rushdown-oriented.

In this video he takes on various platinum to diamond players online with his Urien, including notable player fLoE. While the bulk of this video shows a lot of mirrors, if you are maining Urien at this point, this may be a vital video to watch to glean information on how to deal with said Urien mirror.

Relive ESL Brooklyn Beatdown’s Hype with This Epic Grand Finals Match

If you missed ESL’s inaugural Street Fighter V event–Brooklyn Beatdown–then you missed an insanely good Grand Finals. While it again featured two of the top ten players in the world right now, it did not include usual faces such as Tokido or Razer’s Infiltration–who may have been the favorite going in.

On the contrary, we found an epic set between Evil Geniuses’ Yusuke Momochi and Qanba’s Zhuojun “Xiaohai” Zeng, and it could not have been more exciting. With bracket resets, amazing tech, and even ten seconds of fighting for spacing without pushing a single button, you have one incredibly tense match between the Japanese Ken player most known for his Capcom Cup and Evolution championships, and the Chinese Cammy phenom well-known for winning King of Fighters XIII at Evolution 2014.

ViewSonic Signs Infiltration to Sponsorship and Product Development Deal

ViewSonic, one of the largest computer display manufacturers in the world, has just announced that they have secured a sponsorship and product development deal with Seonwoo “Infiltration” Lee of Team Razer.

With this deal, ViewSonic will be providing Infiltration with gaming displays–particularly their VX line of monitors–for training purposes. In the press statement, Infiltration is quoted as saying “I’m so excited to co-work with ViewSonic as the gaming monitor sponsor… and it is fantastic to have gaming monitors designed for competitive console gaming to practice with from now.”

This deal appears, through the graphic presentation, to coincide with his sponsorship deal with Razer, as the monitor company only seems to providing him practice gear.

Leffen’s United States Visa Approved at Last

Team SoloMid’s William “Leffen” Hjelte has had a long and arduous road to make it back to the United States for competitive play. When we had last reported on this issue, Leffen had announced that he was unable to attend Evolution 2016 due to the processing time involved in receiving a visa to compete in tournaments.

Today, it was announced that his visa application had finally cleared, and his visa has been approved.

Approval doesn’t mean that the visa is in his passport just yet, however. Because of this, Leffen has announced that his attendance of The Big House 6 is still up in the air at this moment.

While this means that he may not be able to attend one of the biggest majors in competitive Smash, it is now certain that the United States will see Leffen back on shore very soon, and should certainly confirm his attendance for Evolution 2017–should Super Smash Bros. Melee once again make the roster.

Canada Cup’s Super Street Fighter II Turbo Event Receives $500 Pot Bonus

We had previously reported that any game that hit a 50 player threshold at Canada Cup would receive a $500 pot bonus.  At press time, the closest game to that mark was none other than the grandfather of all modern fighting games, Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

The game previously hit 45 players at the last Canada Cup and this year, the attendance has grown. It has grown so much in fact, that it has hit the 50 player benchmark and thus receive Lap Chi Duong’s promised $500 pot bonus.

This tournament is shaping up to be of epic proportions. With ST legends such as Damdai, Mattsun, Shougatsu, Kusumondo and Justin Wong confirmed in attendance, and less than a month to get involved, this is turning into the biggest Super Turbo event since the last Tournament of Legends in 2014.

Canada Cup will be held at the Holiday Inn Airport in Toronto, Ontario on October 28th through the 30th, and can be registered for at their website.

desk Keeps the Hits Coming with a Third Urien Combo Video

This has probably been the most active we’ve seen desk in a long time.  Perhaps it is because this is the most inspired he’s been in a long time. With the launch of Urien in Street Fighter V, desk has found his match with, “the most technical, interesting and fun combo character in [Street Fighter V].”

In this video, expect a lot of varied uses of Aegis Reflector in various character specific ways. Most of these combos use the no-knockdown glitch that desk has exploited in previous Urien mix clips. With all these Urien combo videos from desk, it’s beginning to look a lot like 3rd Strike, and it can’t be any more exciting for combo video fans.

Tremble Before desk’s Might With This 100% Urien Combo

It was only a matter of time. With Urien’s damage potential and desk’s insane amount of skill and understanding of the mechanics of games, finding a 100% combo was inevitable. One week after his release, here we are. Desk has, in fact, found a 100% Urien combo. Do keep in mind that this combo is specific to Dhalsim and requires the Urien reflecting his Critical Art in the corner with an Aegis Reflector in order to do the max damage.

As stated in the description of this video, desk utilizes the no-knockdown glitch that he discovered and explained previously in both combos featured in this video. Entirely situational, but entirely excellent to behold.
