There was a time when, across several fighting game communities, match-up charts were one of the most important things the scene could create for their game. These character match-up charts would combine the opinions of top players of every character on how advantageous a match-up was for their main. They involved many people, a lot of of debate, and were generally very time-consuming projects.
Over the years these charts have become more rare, replaced by the “hot takes” of an (usually popular professional) individual’s tier lists. NRS pro MK_REO talks about the pros and cons of this format in his latest video — though the points he addresses are geared towards his own scene, it’s a worthy discussion for every community to have.
