theScore esports documents Rick Fox’s transition from basketball star to esports star

Rick Fox, owner of ESports team Echo Fox, had a slow but important transformation from Basketball Star to ESports entrepreneur. More important than that, though, was the role that he played as “Defender” — and we’re not talking about Basketball. Rick Fox, at a time when no one else of his visibility would or could, defended video games as sport to a media that refused to believe him, and through that, helped raise the interest and prestige of ESports as a whole.

That’s the subject of theScore esports‘s latest documentary, which covers how he found the bridge between the athletic and digital competitive worlds. Though the large focus of the documentary above is on Echo Fox’s venture as a whole, the FGC plays a large part in saving Echo Fox itself — particularly their game-changing 2017 signings of fighting game players like Justin Wong.

R-Joint shows off new combos for Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix 2’s lowest health character, Big Body

In fighting games, “big bodies” are, broadly speaking, larger than average characters with tons of health and damage, but weaknesses in other areas such as mobility. Years before that term existed, though, there was a character in the Kinnikuman manga named “Big Body”. Despite his name and size, he can never be accused of being a tank — he’s dispatched quickly in the original source material, and in the fighting game based off of this series, he is the lowest health character in the game.

But once you learn his combo potential, he hits like… well, like a Big Body.

Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix 2 is the fighting game in question, and it has an excellent, if not surprisingly difficult, juggle system that still inspires exploration to this day. Big Body was never a high tier character (and yes, you can still find tournaments for this game) but as R- JOINT demonstrates in his latest combo video, there’s a lot of damage potential to be discovered. Nearly every BnB demonstrated here does over half-life on the majority of the cast, and rarely costs much in the way of meter. Good luck timing these combos, though, if you seek this game out — KMGP2’s hitboxes are firmly on the model, making some attacks difficult to hit on a juggled opponent.

FightingTuesday brings Japan’s top-notch Dragon Ball FighterZ play to the Red Bull Gaming Sphere

If you’ve got a blank space on your calendar at 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM JST on Tuesdays (that’s 2:00 AM – 8:00 AM CT here in the States), then you can catch some of Japan’s best players charging their ki over at the animeilluminati Twitch channel for their weekly event, FightingTuesday.

This is an officially-sponsored Bandai Namco series that brings in anywhere from 50-60 players alone for Dragon Ball FighterZ (for example). As it is a Bandai Namco event, you can also see some great Tekken 7 action on the channel.

If 2:00 AM is a bit early for you, no sweat: you can catch archives on both their Twitch and YouTube channels. Our very own Jazz, a.k.a. MajinObama, is part of the FightingTuesday staff, and occasionally appears on commentary!

Persona Entertainment reveals the power behind Bandeiras’s Brazilian Ninjitsu in The King of Fighters XIV

Few characters have changed so completely from their original release as Bandeiras has in The King of Fighters XIV. Since the very first version of the game, he’s received new OTG states, combo filler, better frame data… the list of changes is long and almost all of it has been beneficial for the charge-grappler.

Persona Entertainment has worked thier way through the cast of KOFXIV to show off flashy high damage for the whole cast. Today’s stop with the founder of  “Brazilian Ninja Arts” might just be the most exciting of all, as Bandeiras is woefully underused despite his damage and mixup potential.

“With 2D artwork, it takes an immense number of hours to generate the different frames, but if it’s already 3D, it doesn’t use up as much time,” Kondo explains. “This process makes it very easy to generate and edit the movements so that we have a wide variety of different punches or special attacks, whatever we need to make the game look and feel great.”

You can read the full interview here at Nicalis’s Blog.

Ghost Gaming signs Du “NuckleDu” Dang, debuts under new team at Defend The North

Du “NuckleDu” Dang was, for a while, one of the most valuable free agents in the FGC. The Capcom Cup 2016 winner has such a list of accomplishments under his belt that it was only a matter of time before a company wised up and signed him. That company, it seems, is Ghost Gaming:

We here at SRK would like to congratulate Du on his new sponsorship. We’d also like to take the time to mourn the passing of one of the best technically-real sponsor names we’ve seen in the community, “My Wallet”. It was a good run.

Beef up your Paul combos with Rage Art cancels in Tekken 7

Paul is one of Tekken 7‘s easiest pick-up-and-play characters, dishing up giant damage in short combos and well spaced Death Fists. He’s a great character to learn the game with, but there are a few quirks about the character that don’t apply to others in the cast. One of those is his Rage Art, or more specifically, the cancelled version of it with a back-input.

Learning combos from this gives Paul more damage than just letting the cinematic rock. Since you get the Rage Art’s large bounce from virtually any combo starter, learning post-rage combos gives Paul comeback potential like no other.

Ryu morphs into a Power Ranger in new reveal for Power Rangers: Legacy Wars

It was pretty wild when Ryu, Chun-Li, Bison, Cammy, and Akuma were revealed for the Power Rangers: Legacy Wars mobile fighting game a few months back. But, if you looked at that and thought “Ah, that’s it, that’s as far as this weird crossover will go”, well… Ryu is a Power Ranger now, according to the newly revealed trailer by nGate at San Diego Comic Con:

The Ryu Ranger is his own separate character, and he’s available now in Power Rangers: Legacy Wars.

One wonders if Ryu Ranger will appear as an alternate outfit in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition somewhere down the line. Personally, I’m still holding out hope that the Power Rangers will just get their own actual console fighting game, instead. The last one we had Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition on SNES, a surprisingly competent fighter for its era that would see its battle engine reused for Gundam Wing: Endless Duel.
