SNK’s The King of Fighters XIV e-Sports Support Program extended to July 31st, 2018

The deadline to apply for SNK’s KOF XIV E-sports Support Program has been extended to July 31st, 2018. Originally set to end on August 31st of this year, the program offers cash prize bonuses, social media advertisement and other perks to qualifying tournaments.

As mentioned in our report of the program’s launch, the basic requirements to apply are simple: The tournament must be offline and there must be at least 20 participants. Despite the name of the program only mentioning The King of Fighters XIV, the support is extended to any game under the SNK umbrella, but in order to get support, the game played must (of course) be an SNK title.

If you or someone you know is interested in applying, you can get all details be reviewing the full application here.

Tekken 7 discounted 20% for PlayStation Plus subscribers

The digital version of Tekken 7 is currently discounted 20% for PlayStation Plus subscribers, and PS4 users have until August 1st to take advantage of the savings. This is the first time the game has been discounted on the PlayStation Store, and is likely a response to all the positive activity currently surrounding the game.

The upcoming months hold exciting things for Tekken 7, like the new designer panel art coming in September and of course the release of SNK boss Geese Howard this winter. For the short term, DLC character Eliza will be finally downloadable for all players on July 28th, which is just around the corner — and falls within the PS Plus savings window.

If you’re interested in purchasing, you’ve still got a few days, and you can get straight to the PlayStation Store listing by clicking here.

Let off some steam with this Maxima combo video for The King of Fighters XIV

Persona Enterainment’s latest combo video shines the spotlight on Maxima, the patriarchal cyborg slugger of The King of Fighters XIV. Players seem to be turned away from the character for his slow walk speed and high start up frames, but the big guy has a lot of potential — as the combo video clearly demonstrates.

One thing that has never been called into question is Maxima’s ability to deal big damage. A well-executed string followed by a Max Cancel finish can easily deplete an average character’s life bar. While it’ll be up to you to develop a strategy to execute these combos successfully, Persona’s combo video shows potential Maxima mains what they have to look forward to.

Check out the video below — and while you’re at it, check out the COMBONAUTS 4-part 100% combo exhibition for The King of Fighters XIV.

Ed Boon says next Injustice 2 DLC will include the most “unexpected character”

At San Diego Comic Con 2017, Ed Boon did a video interview in which he was asked about Injustice 2’s next batch of DLC characters. When the topic of new gods entering the arena is brought up, he becomes visibly excited when saying he has already seen an unfinished cut of the next DLC trailer himself, and that the upcoming reveal will receive, in his words, “The biggest wow.” The NetherRealm developer goes on to say that the most “unexpected character” will be introduced in the next set, but did not give any character-specific clues.

A clip of his response can be seen in the video below.

While the video goes on to speculate about the chances of Spawn and Hellboy making it into the game next,  fan front runners still include members of the Watchmen series, which DC comics currently hold the rights to. The Starfire reveal set the bar pretty high, so if Ed Boon is excited for what’s next, Injustice 2 fans should be as well!

From Fatal Fury to Tekken 7: History Behind the Warrior tells the story of Geese Howard

Fans of the SNK fighting games are sure to already be familiar with Geese Howard, but the kingpin of South Town’s debut in Tekken 7 has probably raised some eyebrows in the Tekken community, and many who heard the Evo announcement may still be wondering: who in the world is Geese Howard?

History Behind the Warrior’s latest video goes through Geese’s long, dark history for the SNK enthusiast and the inquisitive Tekken player alike. Covering everything from his dismal childhood to his rise in political and physical power, the channel does a good job of finding continuity in a story that is spread out between the Fatal Fury, The Art of Fighting, and The King of Fighters series.

Check out the video below and to hear about the rise, fall, and resurrection of one of SNK’s biggest, baddest bosses!

BigBoysToys premiere “Bulkyz Collection” and tease Violent Ken figure

BigBoysToys teased something big back in February, and this month they revealed that the big announcement is to be a new line of toys, appropriately named the “Bulkyz Collection.” In size and design, the new line is a far cry from their T.N.C (The New Challenger) series, which features several classic Street Fighter characters performing their special attacks with added lights and sounds.

Muscle-clad and standing at 30 centimeters (just under a foot), Ryu is the first to get the Bulkyz treatment. There is a standard figure portraying Ryu in his typical red and white appearance, and a limited “Classic Ryu” toy sporting the white headband and brown gloves variant. Images of both can be seen in the gallery below.

Go for the TKO with this Steve Fox combo breakdown for Tekken 7

You’d think a character with no kicks and only two attack buttons would be easy to master, but the opposite is true for Tekken 7‘s Steve Fox, naturally. In lieu of a set of kicks, He’s got a lot of fancy commands for ducks, weaves, and other maneuvers that often must be combined with various attacks to achieve significant damage. Though the effort it takes to combine the footwork with the hand work is well worth it, the intricacies of the inputs can be difficult to keep track of.

Lucky for us, HurtboxTV has put together a combo breakdown video that can help guide you through the technical details that comprise Steve’s smooth moves. For the viewer’s convenience, several hard-hitting combos are performed and then replayed in slow motion, with attack inputs on screen.

Check out HurtboxTV’s video below to learn how to box like Steve Fox!

For those unfamiliar with Tekken’s attack input notation, here’s a quick guide to help you understand the on-screen data a little better:

D – Down
F – Forward
B – Back

2 – Right Punch
3 – Left Kick
4 – Right Kick

Also revealed was a toy replica of Mortal Kombat’s big boss Shao Kahn, complete with his signature throne and Wrath Hammer. Images of all of these yet-to-come releases from Storm can be seen in the pics below; you can view their current available catalog on their official website.

James Chen talks Evo 2017, Dragon Ball FigherZ, and the importance of passion in the FGC with theScore eSports

If you were tuned into the Evolution 2017 Street Fighter Grand Finals, there’s no doubt that you witnessed commentator James Chen burst into tears in response to Tokido proclaiming that “fighting games are great.” theScore esports caught up with James Chen post-Evo to get a grasp of exactly what he was feeling in that moment, and also to have an extensive chat about all things FGC.

Regarding Evo, James Chen expresses his love for what the biggest fighting game tournament in the world has become. Specifically, he appreciates how fans are easily able to interact with players and commentators without any red tape, and how such interaction is essential to the spirit of the fighting game community as a whole.

James also shared his thoughts on Dragon Ball FighterZ, which he believes will bring a lot of “new blood” to the competitive scene, and describes the game’s potential as “gigantic”. He also makes a good point of how the character recognition of Dragon Ball Z characters rivals that of the cast of Street Fighter and, with that more considered, it could potentially dethrone Street Fighter as the main attraction for tournaments in the future.

When it comes to fighting games, a community veteran such as James always has something valuable to add to the conversation. Check out his full interview with theScore below.
