The Nintendo Minute offers a new look at Ultra Street Fighter II’s Buddy Battle and color edit modes

As some of you surely know, Ultra Street Fighter II: the Final Challengers goes on sale on May 26, 2017. One of the interesting new features of USFII is a mode called “Buddy Battle” which, similar to the Dramatic Battle of the Street Fighter Alpha games, allows two players to simultaneously fight a computer-controlled opponent.

Buddy Battle was one of the main things featured in a recent episode of the Nintendo Minute, where hosts Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang sit down with Capcom’s Phong Tran to try the game out. In addition to Buddy Battle, they also go over the game’s color edit mode, creating colors based on Mario characters such as Princess Peach, Yoshi, and Mario himself.

Capcom’s Matt Edwards catches up with K-Brad at Battle Arena Melbourne 9

One of America’s exports to last weekend’s Battle Arena Melbourne 9 is none other than Evil Geniuses’ Kenneth “K-Brad” Bradley. While he has attended the OzHadou Nationals in Sydney before, this was K-Brad’s first time flying to Melbourne to compete in BAM.

Capcom’s Matt Edwards caught up with K-Brad at the tournament, where they got a chance to discuss a few things: such as K-Brad’s loyalty to Cammy–a character that he’s been playing for over 5 years now, since Street Fighter IV. While Edwards makes a joke about liking her British accent, K-Brad admits that that is part of the appeal, on top of his familiarity with her. That said, he also talks about his side characters, such as Karin, who he started playing with the help of his former teammate, Echo Fox|Justin Wong.

In addition to this, they also discuss the current view that the United States is currently dominant in Street Fighter V. According to K-Brad, he feels that this is because the game is very offense-focused and that the American players in particular tend to prefer playing very aggressively.

Of course, that isn’t all that they talk about. Hit the interview up below for the rest, including which player and character combination K-Brad fears the most.

Ken’s funky kick cross-up in Super Street Fighter II Turbo just got funkier

You know a game is a classic when even after two decades, new stuff continues to be found for it! Such is the case of Super Street Fighter II Turbo–which is the subject of this new video from legendary combo video maker Final Showdown.

The focus of the video below is Ken’s “funky kick” cross up. Most Super Turbo veterans know that Ken’s funky kicks, especially the half-circle forward version,  can cross up in certain situations. The new discovery in Final Showdown’s video expands on that, showcasing how the player can cancel the tail end of the funky kick’s animation into itself, allowing it to cross up in even more situations than normal.

Capcom catches up with Bonchan at Battle Arena Melbourne 9

This past weekend’s Battle Arena Melbourne 9 gave us one of the big surprises of the current Capcom Pro Tour season: sticking to his guns with a character many had deemed too nerfed to be competitive, Red Bull’s Masato “Bonchan” Takahashi took his Nash all the way to grand finals, eventually winning the tournament.

Capcom’s Matt Edwards caught up with Bonchan at the event to talk about his win, and a few other topics. These include his feelings on putting Nash “back on the map” with his victory at BAM 9–hopefully inspiring other Nash players–as well as his own thoughts on the Australian competitors, and more.

Can You Beat an Esports Champion: Watch an “average Joe” mount a comeback against Justin Wong, & other highlights

Last Saturday, Gillette and Compete’s “Can You Beat an Esports Champion” gave amateur players the chance try and take on some of Street Fighter V’s top pros. Specifically, the line up consisted of Team Liquid’s Du “NuckleDu” Dang, DTN’s Bryant “Smug” Huggins, and Echo Fox’s Justin Wong.

Well, it seems that an amateur does have a shot at beating out a pro, given the chance (and likely copious amounts of practice). Compete has now shared some highlights from the event, including this amazing match where an “average Joe” going by the gamertag Option is actually able to stand up to Justin Wong, even mounting a comeback against the latter with his Ibuki.

Of course, there were other noteworthy matches during the event as well–especially when some of New York’s more well-known players also showed up. NuckleDu for one found himself having to face another Guile master in the form of Kevin “Di3minion” Landon.

Smug, however, found himself doing much better in his match against New York veteran Sanford “Santhrax” Kelly.

Now, these aren’t all of the highlights from the event. Head on over to Compete for more matches: including a young kid trying his best to go up against Justin, and a head-to-head match between Smug and NuckleDu.

Get meaty with these EX fireball setups for Ryu in Street Fighter V

Ryu has seen a decrease in effectiveness in season 2 of Street Fighter V. As such, it’s important for Ryu players to try to find anything that can give them an advantage!

One way for Ryu to gain such an advantage over his opponents is using the knockdown from his EX Hadouken to set up meaty hits on the opponent’s wakeup. In their latest video, NurseLee focuses on these setups utilizing the EX Hadouken. Specifically, the setups in the video below are designed to work on opponents who try to quick rise out of the EX fireball’s knockdown, as a double dash following it gives Ryu just the right timing to get the meaty hit in.

Sega is planning to revive some major IPs before 2020

One of the pioneers of the fighting game genre as we know it today is Sega. The company experimented a lot with the genre back in the nineties, resulting in the birth of a number of classic fighting game franchises. That said–the company hasn’t really done much in the genre as of late. However, some recent moves by the company may yet change all that.

Sega recently made a business presentation named “Road to 2020.” In this presentation, one of the bullet points lists the “Revival of major IPs.” While the statement itself doesn’t specifically mention fighting games, it’s still good news for fans of their classic franchises. Virtua Fighter has always been one of their most well-known IPs–even if its arcade-centric releases and technically-demanding reputation did hurt series sales.

Now, whether or not this could lead to a new Virtua Fighter–let alone one that could finally really break out, outside of Japan–is still up in the air. But statements about creating “global hits,” as well as simultaneously releasing games globally, do give hope that the some of the obstacles that held the series back may be addressed.
