Start Dr. Doom’s TAC infinite consistently with the help of this Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tutorial

Yes, we have another video on TAC infinites in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. However, this time it isn’t a new TAC infinite–Dr. Doom already has all he needs. Instead, we have something that can either make your life easier (if you’re a Dr. Doom player), or more miserable (if you already have trouble against the match up).

In this new video, Spartan Throne demonstrates a method to consistently get to the correct height while starting Dr. Doom’s TAC infinite. Now, for those who don’t know why, this is important because successfully starting the infinite depends on how high off the ground both characters are. Using the method discussed in the video helps Dr. Doom players start the combo more consistently.

If you’re a Dr. Doom player who’s having trouble landing the combo regularly, we suggest giving the video below a spin. As for those who don’t play Dr. Doom and despise the infinite, well, I guess you’ll just have to learn to guess the TAC better, next time.

Moveswap mod reveals unused Hyper Combo for Morrigan in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

One of the interesting things about having a PC version of a game–and the ability to mod it–is when unused assets are discovered. These things can tell us more about the game’s development, and reveal what things were cut out before release.

One such unused asset surfaced in a recent moveswap mod for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 by pat728. The mod swapped out Morrigan’s moveset for Magneto’s and, in the process, had the former call up a voice line that she normally doesn’t use in the game.

The interesting thing about this voice line is that it’s for Morrigan’s “Soul Eraser” Hyper Combo. This move was a multi-beam Hyper that Morrigan originally had in Marvel vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. However, in the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 series (as well as the preceeding Tatsunoko vs. Capcom), this move was seemingly replaced with Finishing Shower. The discovery of this voice line seems to indicate that Soul Eraser was originally planned to be given back to her in either the original Marvel vs. Capcom 3, or its Ultimate update. Why it was never implemented we’ll likely never know, though it’s not as if Morrigan is hurting for more Hyper Combos, what with four of them already in the game (and the fact that its replacement, Finishing Shower, can be performed in the air to end her combos).

For those interested, you can check out pat728’s moveswap in the video below. The line itself is spoken at around the 27 second mark.

Nasr Esports picks up Adel “Big Bird” Anouche

As the scene grows, more and more players are getting picked up by esports teams looking to take a slice of the fighting game pie. The latest player to get signed is Adel “Big Bird” who has been picked up by Nasr Esports.

Hailing from the United Arab Emirates, Big Bird has become one of the more notable players from the Middle East in both Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter V.  Picking up Ken in the latter, Big Bird was unfortunately only able to attend and earn points in two Capcom Pro Tour events last season. Despite that, he’s still competed and placed high in a lot of other tournaments in and around the region. This experience is likely one of the reasons that Big Bird caught the eye of Nasr Esports–an organization dedicated to gathering the best players in the Middle East. With new backing, it’s highly likely that we’ll be seeing more of Big Bird this season.

We here at Shoryuken wish Big Bird and Nasr Esports the best in this new relationship.

Team NINJA opens its Halloween costume design contest for Dead or Alive 5: Last Round

Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is known for its selection of alternate costumes, as much as it is for its gameplay–perhaps more so. Team NINJA continues to release a generous number of costume packs for the game, even to this day. Now, while most of those costumes are either their own designs, or crossovers with other franchises, they occasionally open the door for fans to get their designs in as well.

For any fans looking to get their own designs into the game, Team NINJA is once again hosting its Halloween Designer’s Challenge. Fans can submit their designs for their favorite characters (with the exception of Christie, and KOF crossover DLC character Mai Shiranui) to Team NINJA on or before May 7, 2017. Out of all the submissions, select designs will be added into the game–with 10 designers receiving special prizes from Team NINJA and Koei Tecmo Games.

Aside from its unique 3-on-3 elimination-based combat, SNK’s The King of Fighters series has also been known for impressive official art, from different artists throughout the years. Currently, the art for The King of Fighters XIV is drawn by Eisuke Ogura, who’s best known for working as the main character illustrator for NEO GEO Battle Coliseum, as well as helping in the other numbered KOF installments.

To give fans a short glimpse of how Ogura works, SNK recently released a new video showing his digital illustration process. The art itself below is a special piece commissioned to celebrate the birthday of series anti-hero Iori Yagami, and serves to demonstrates the unique style that Ogura brings to the series.

Daigo Umehara on switching to Guile, Season 2 balance changes, Capcom Pro Tour, Evo Japan, and more

For some of his fans, one of the biggest bits of news to have come out recently is that Twitch.Hx.CYG BST|Daigo Umehara would be switching to Guile for ELEAGUE, and likely for the rest of Season 2 as well. While Umehara has used Guile before in games such as Super Street Fighter IV–and Super Street Fighter II Turbo–the move away from his established “main” Ryu has caused a lot of discussion among fans.

In a recent interview with PVP Live, Umehara talks about his move back to Guile, as well as other topics relevant to Street Fighter V Season 2’s balance, the Capcom Pro Tour, Evo Japan, and more. Regarding his switch to Guile, he chalks it up to having to play at a competitive level, and having to play whoever suits him best as a competitive player. For now, that character is Guile. However, if he we just playing for fun, he would stick with Ryu.

Regarding Season 2’s overall balance, he feels that the update cycle happened a bit too fast, and that has forced him to have to adapt just as fast to the changes to the game.

As for the Capcom Pro Tour, Daigo’s main wish is to see more new players from other regions make it out to Capcom Cup. He points out that currently, we see established top players traveling a lot, which tends to limit the number of new faces making it out. At the same time, he also states that we still need to let the players who are dominating the scene (which he currently says are the U.S. players) set the bar.

Umehara also talks a bit about Evo Japan, stating that the country hasn’t seen an open tournament of its size since the now-defunct Tougeki tournaments. His hope is that Evo Japan helps create more hype for fighting games back in his home country.

Of course, this isn’t all that Daigo talks about in the interview. You can read the rest over at PVP Live.

Sega announced a new Virtual-On–and it’s an anime crossover game

Here’s some surprising news: Sega recently announced that it would be releasing a brand-new Virtual-On game for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. However, that’s not all that makes it surprising–the game, called A Certain Magical Virtual-On, is a crossover between the series and Dengeki Bunko’s Toaru Majutsu no Index (“A Certain Magical Index”) light novel and anime series.

Released in 1996, Cyber Troopers Virtual-On represented a break from the 3D fighting games of the time, featuring unique twin analog stick controls and an over-the-shoulder perspective. Despite this–or maybe because of it–the series has gained a dedicated following, while garnering high praise; Evo co-founder Seth Killian has stated that it was the “best example” of a 3D game that implemented the values that fireballs bring to traditional 2D fighters.

As for how all this relates to A Certain Magical Index, well it seems that the game’s story (written by A Certain Magical Index author Kazuma Kamachi) sets up Virtual-On as a actual sport in that series’ world. Characters from the series such as Touma Kamijou and Mikoto Misaka will be piloting Virtuaroids around Academy City. As part of this, the special abilities of these characters in the series will now be a part of the arsenal these Virtuaroids can use.

As for how the game actually plays: sadly Sega has yet to release any gameplay footage. However, they do state that the they intend to make use of all the experience they’ve gained working on the series to maintain the “high speed battle action” that it is known for.

A Certain Magical Virtual-On is set to release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita sometime in 2018. In the meantime, here’s Sega’s announcement trailer for the game.

Want to get into fighting games? Check out the new Fighter’s Dojo video series

Despite how simple the premise of the genre seems to be, fighting games are quite difficult to get into. Whether your trying the genre out yourself, or trying to get your friends to join in, the nuances of the genre can often be a bit much to take in.

For those who’re just starting out with fighters and are struggling to learn, Frabisaur has started an excellent new video series called the Fighter’s Dojo. Unlike most videos put out by the community–which focus on helping existing players get better–the Fighter’s Dojo focuses instead on players who are just starting out with the genre from scratch.

Despite being a relatively new series –it only has two episodes as of writing this–the Fighter’s Dojo has already garnered positive feedback from community figures such as James Chen, and Stephen “Sajam” Lyon. You can see why in the first episode alone, where Frabisaur talks about something a lot of new players gloss over: figuring out how the game wants to be played. Specifically, he takes Street Fighter and uses it as an example on how to break down how to figure this out. Of course, don’t just take our word for it, check out the episode 1, alongside episode 2 which talks about offense and defense, below.

Mad Catz has been delisted from the New York Stock Exchange

It’s no secret that peripheral maker Mad Catz has had a tough couple of years. The company has experienced a downturn in revenue recently, which has resulted in significant layoffs and restructuring last year–including letting go of most of the fighting game players that they sponsored.

It seems that the company has suffered another blow, as they have now been delisted from the New York Stock exchange due to the “abnormally low trading price” of its common stock. NYSE regulations require that a company’s stock trades at $1.00 across 30 consecutive days to remain listed in the exchange. Mad Catz stock, on the other hand, went as low as $0.06 before they were delisted.

Mad Catz made a name for itself at the turn of the decade as a producer of top-of-the-line arcade sticks. Now, while its association with the fighting game community was generally successful–with them having a heavy involvement in both sponsoring players and the Capcom Pro Tour itself–other ventures haven’t seen quite the same level of success. Their Rock Band 4 peripherals, something which the company seemingly hinged their future on, failed to stem the tide of loss and turn their fortunes around.

By the hoary hosts of Hoggoth! Dr. Strange piles on damage with TAC infinites in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

TAC Infinites seem to be the gifts that keep on giving in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Recently, we features some new TAC infinites for Dante, however he’s not the only character with newly-discovered team air combo infinites.

Finisher of war recently shared a video demonstrating some new TAC infinites for Dr. Strange. The majority of these use his flight mode to keep him from touching the ground, and thus preventing hitstun scaling from coming into effect. Now, while most are for the corner, he also has one that works midscreen. This one instead uses his Flames of the Faltine fireball to juggle his opponent right before he hits the ground, allowing Dr. Strange enough time to get the quick rejump back up to continue the infinite.
