ARMS has a new update, and a new character is possibly being teased

ARMS, Nintendo’s experimental, stretchy-armed arena fighter for the Switch has received a new update; the contents of the update, which brings the game version up to 5.4, have not been revealed — however it may point to new content for the game in the future.

The announcement of the update comes via the official Twitter account of ARMS‘s in-game commentator Biff. Alongside the announcement of the update, Biff teases what may possibly a new character for the game.

In the tweet above, Biff mentions Dr. Coyle (head of the ARMS Lab) being busy in her lab, and talking to an unknown person in it.

Additionally, the Nintendo Switch Online service has started this week,  so it’s likely that the update is related to that as well.

PlayStation Classic mini-console announced, comes pre-loaded with 20 games — including Tekken 3

Following in the footsteps of companies like Nintendo, Sega, and SNK, Sony has just announced a retro miniature console of their own. The PlayStation Classic launches this December, and comes with a number of PlayStation games.

The PlayStation Classic takes on the form factor of the original PlayStation console, but is 45% smaller. When it launches in December 3, it will come pre-loaded with 20 classic PlayStation titles, including Namco’s Tekken 3.

The inclusion of Tekken 3 should come as no surprise, as the series was synonymous with PlayStation during the 1990s. Other titles that have been confirmed to be pre-loaded into the PlayStation Classic include Final Fantasy VII, Ridge Racer Type 4, Wild Arms, and Jumping Flash.

What’s interesting about this announcement is that these titles are described as “pre-loaded”, which seems to imply the possibility to purchase and load more games into the PlayStation Classic, an ability that’s missing from the existing mini consoles on the market. We’ll likely learn if this is the case once the remaining 15 titles are announced in the near future.

The PlayStation Classic is now available for pre-order in the US and Canada for $99.99 USD or $129.99 CAD. Included in the package are USB cable for power, HDMI cable, and 2 classic-styled controllers. [Those that were hoping for Dual Shock controllers: the original PlayStation didn’t include them, the feature was introduced later in the PlayStation’s run. So it appears the focus in this collection will only be on the early pre-analog titles. Maybe a future upgrade will be possible? We’ll see. – Editor]

Android 17 is confirmed to be the next DLC character for Dragon Ball FighterZ

Long speculated to be coming to the game as a DLC character, thanks to some data mining (and the fact that his model is already in the game, as part of Android 18’s moveset), Android 17 has been officially confirmed to be coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ in the latest issue of V-Jump.

The issue (a scan of which you can see below) states that Android 17 is set to arrive in the game later this month, and will have special moves such as the “Barrier Explosion” where he generates a barrier around himself and does a dash attack, as well as his “End Game” which sees him go behind his opponents to land continuous attacks. His Meteor Attack on the other hand is the “Super Electric Strike”, where he builds energy around his hand, before shooting it at his opponent.

Alongside Android 17, a new stage, the “Space Arena”, will be added to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions (and likely the PC version – V-Jump doesn’t cover PC, so it wasn’t mentioned in the article). The Switch version on the other hand will receive this new stage at a later date.

In addition to this, Z Capsules featuring Halloween-themed lobby characters and stamps will be available for a limited time until late November.

The physical disc version of Fighting EX Layer arrives on December 6 in Japan

As previously reported, Fighting EX Layer is getting a physical disc release in Japan. Now, we know exactly when the physical version of ARIKA’s excellent fighting game will arrive.

Fighting EX Layer‘s physical edition will be available in Japan on December 6 for ¥6,960. As a special bonus, first print copies will also come with free DLC. What exactly this DLC is has not yet been confirmed. ARIKA has so far only released 1 paid DLC character (Hokuto) and a number of paid Gougi decks. However, these are only DLC for the “Lite” version of the game, and come with the “Standard” version.

That said, the trailer they showed at Evo 2018 hinted at more DLC characters, including SNK’s Terry Bogard. It could be possible that one or all of these character will be included with physical release, if they come out in time for it.

Crescent Esports signs FGC_Carlos

Yet another esports organization has picked up a fighting game player: Crescent Esports has announced that they have signed Carlos “FGC_Carlos” Bailey.

While he may not be as big a name as some other signed players, FGC_Carlos is a longtime player and veteran of various games. These days, the Orlando native (but currently based in Atlanta, GA) focuses mostly on Street Fighter V and Dragon Ball FighterZ, having achieved good placings in them in various tournaments.

Crescent Esports is a New Orleans-based team that sponsors a number of players in multiple games. In addition to this, the organization has a heavy community focus, hosting a number of monthly events.

We here at Shoryuken wish the best for both FGC_Carlos and Crescent Esports in their new relationship.

Samurai Shodown, Dead or Alive 6, & Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection are part of Sony’s Tokyo Game Show lineup

Sony has opened their official website for the 2018 Tokyo Game Show, and they’ve revealed the games that they’re bringing to the event. Part of this lineup includes a few fighting games that many people may be looking forward to.

The fighting games that are part of Sony’s TGS 2018 lineup are Samurai Shodown, Dead or Alive 6, and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. The first two shouldn’t be surprising, considering that they were featured in their pre-TGS “PlayStation LineUp Tour” livestream. Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection may have already launched in the West, but the Japanese version has yet to be released owing to Capcom adding Japanese language support, among other things.

Of the three, only Dead or Alive 6 and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection are listed as playable at the show floor. Samurai Shodown on the other hand is only listed as having a trailer. Whether or not this is a new trailer or simply the reveal trailer from last week is yet unknown.

The 2018 Tokyo Game Show takes place from September 20 to 23 at the Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

Pre-ordering Dragon Ball FighterZ is the only way to get Dragon Ball Z Super Butoden on Switch

As reported some time ago, Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s Switch release would bring with it a port of the 1993 Super Famicom fighter Dragon Ball Z Super Butoden. Now, Bandai Namco has confirmed that this port will only be pre-order bonus for Dragon Ball FighterZ on Switch. That’s right, the Switch port of Dragon Ball Z Super Butoden will be available exclusively for those who pre-order Dragon Ball FighterZ for Nintendo’s portable console hybrid. In addition to this, Bandai Namco has also confirmed that this is the only way to get the game — at least for now.

Bandai Namco is no stranger to pre-order bonuses like this. However, while previous efforts have eventually received a standalone release, it seems that they have no plans to do so for Dragon Ball Z Super Butoden. In addition to access to Dragon Ball Z Super Butoden, pre-orders will also come with early access to the Super Saiyan Blue versions of Goku and Vegeta.

Dragon Ball FighterZ for Switch launches on September 28.

“Breaking Down the Stick” show takes a closer look at the Victrix Pro FS

Peripheral maker Victrix showed off their impressive looking, brushed aluminum arcade stick, the Pro FS at Evo 2018. Based on what we’ve seen so far, the Victrix Pro FS seems competent enough — BUT some aficionados may be looking for more information about the Pro FS, especially when it comes to modding it.

The latest episode of “Breaking Down the Stick” focuses mostly on that. In this episode, host Jasen Hicks (of Jasen’s Customs) takes a closer look at a preview build of the Victrix Pro FS, and tries to see what any players looking to customize or modify one can expect.

The Victrix Pro FS goes on sale on November 1.

Samurai Shodown V Special is on sale in Asian and European PlayStation Stores

For those interested in more classic Samurai Shodown games in the way of the recent announcement of a new installment, here’s some great news. One of the series’ best games is currently on sale on the PlayStation Store in Asia and Europe.

Samurai Shodown V Special, one of the best games most players have never played, is currently on sale for at least half off depending on the region. Specifically, in Asian countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan, the game is on sale 50% off its normal price. In European countries such as the Great Britain, France, Germany, and Australia on the other hand, the game is on sale for 66% to 67% off.

Take note that for Europe, the listing is for the bundle containing both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions. In Asia however, players have the option for buying the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions separately, or getting the bundle, all under discount.

As for North America, Samurai Shodown V Special is sadly not on sale in the region.

Storm Collectibles has acquired the license to make Samurai Shodown V Special figures

With a new Samurai Shodown looming, it seems that we’re about to see more stuff from the series, both in and out of game. One avenue for this is toys and collectibles, and one toymaker looks to be readying to make new figures for the franchise: Storm Collectibles has announced that they have acquired the license to create figures based on Samurai Shodown V Special. Details about what exact figures they’ll be making have yet to be announced.

Samurai Shodown V Special, known as Samurai Spirits Zero Special in Japan, is one of the more popular Samurai Shodown games for competitive play — right up there with the classic Samurai Shodown II. We’ve run a feature on this game back in 2014, detailing how it’s “one of the best fighting games you’ve never played”.

Storm Collectibles on the other hand is no stranger to the world of fighting game figures. Prior to this, they’ve released a number of excellent figures for Street Fighter, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat. You can check out their previous figures that we’ve covered here.
