Team Hazama vs. Susano’o and Team Bullet vs. Naoto face off in BlazBlue Central Fiction sets

Exceed Assault (originally named CrossXBattle) is an online exhibition series celebrating various BlazBlue: Central Fiction match-ups. In a first-to-10-set format, a team of the same characters battles another one. There’s also usually a special FT10 between two skilled players. We have footage of the latest Exceed Assault available for perusal.

We see some rather “rare” characters in these batches. First up was Team Bullet battling Team Naoto. At first, it seemed like Bullet had no chance. Naotos pulled ahead 3-0, obliterating the close-ranged grapplers. But over time, slowly but surely, Team Bullet started to pick up their game and catch the Naoto players off-guard. It was an incredibly close set that came down to the last deciding round.

Next up is Dolfy Valkenyahn versus Myoro Relius. The long set provides good study material for this rather rare match-up. Again, it’s a fairly close set, but one of them does emerge as more dominant. The commentators discuss the situations and share their insight during it.

Lastly, Team Susano’o fought Team Hazama. Susano’o is a newcomer to BBCF, and both characters are considered somewhat weak in 1.0. The challenge for Susano’o is unlocking special moves during combat with his Drive ability. It’s a tricky match-up thanks to Hazama’s good mobility.

View all the footage below, contained in a playlist.

Stay tuned, as we know that more episodes of Exceed Assault are coming. We’ve been hearing the next one is a husband-wife battle! Read more about how Exceed Assault started on Shoryuken.

PG|SKD battles Grover over the BlazBlue: Central Fiction grand finals at Summer Jam XI

In what’s probably one of the last big BlazBlue: Central Fiction 1.0 tournaments, we have two top players facing off against each other in a Grand Finals clash. The venerated PG|SKD’s Izayoi battles Grover who is among — if not the — top Carl in the United States. Though the set is a little one-sided, it’s definitely a worthy watch to also listen to some commentary.

Despite Carl’s pressure and unblockable setups, Izayoi proves to be a very difficult match-up. Izayoi’s mobility is infinitely superior to Carl’s, and as long she activates her Drive, she has very easy opportunities to pressure and teleport. Grover does occasionally catch her, and it’s not that easy to get out, but when SKD has resources, he doesn’t allow Grover to lock him down into submission.

It will be interesting to see how the match-up changes in 2.0, though the overall spirit of it probably won’t be too different.

A married couple’s first fight? Tekken 6 at the Japanese Mikado arcade

Responsibilities, adulthood, marriage… all those typically get in the way of fighting games. But what if the one you marry is your sparring partner? Whether this is the first “fight” of their marriage or a way to commemorate a special time over a video game, this Japanese couple held their ceremony at an atypical place.

Kazuhiro and his wife Yukiko got married at Mikado, the famous Japanese arcade. Surrounded by arcade cabinets of various titles, a red carpet graced the rented out venue. As for the guest seats, they used the chairs typically used for sittings at the cabinets.

Post the ceremony, the couple dove into some Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion sets. Why that game and not Tekken 7? It’s unclear, but maybe that’s the game the couple bonded over in the first place.

It’s endearing to see how much fighting games can mean and bond two people together. Let’s hope any future fights stay within the realm of Tekken!

How to install your own character colors for the PC version of BlazBlue: Central Fiction

Color customization is a highly-coveted feature in fighting games, as we know that choosing colors is dear to many players. While BlazBlue: Central Fiction lacks a built-in mode like that, the PC crowd isn’t stopped by such limitations. It’s possible to install your very own color palettes as costumers for BlazBlue characters, so making references to other anime is easier than ever.

Koefficient shows in this video tutorial how to do just that. Once you have a color palette file, there’s a certain file path to follow in the game’s Steam directory. Under “data,” access the “char” folder to be able to swap out palettes. The streamer shows all the steps on how to do that below.

Wondering how to get a custom color palette in the first place? Koefficient points to two people who might just do that for you. SegGel2009 and MooseJuice on Twitter take requests. Make sure to not overwhelm them, though! Some of the colors Koefficient shows off is a Chie color for Bullet, and an Enkidu color for Azrael.

Koefficient also made a video that features a stage mod; one of the special stages from the modders is from Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

BlazBlue: Central Fiction’s Es is top tier now? Check out extended gameplay with commentary on Ronitta’s Es

The 2.0 patch for BlazBlue: Central Fiction is arriving on consoles promptly, in just about a week. Those who haven’t had access to an arcade like Round 1, and don’t live in Japan, have had to satisfy themselves by studying footage from around the web. It seems like we’re slowly arriving at a point where we have figured out how strong the characters are relative to one another.

This video compilation features Ronitta, probably the top Es player in Japan right now. Es is emerging as a very powerful character in the new patch, something Dora extensively talks about. Throughout the stream, Ronitta battles Makoto, Dora’s Bang, a Jubei, and a Ragna player. It doesn’t look like anyone can break Ronitta’s win streak!

Throughout the video, Dora answers player questions and commentates on character strengths, so it’s worth a listen. Dora has also recently made a BlazBlue 2.0 tier list video that explains his thoughts on the current meta.

Early BlazBlue: Central Fiction 2.0 tier list gives a new perspective on the competitive landscape

The 2.0 patch for BlazBlue: Central Fiction hasn’t been out for very long in arcades in Japan, and it is coming to consoles soon. But as we well know, tier lists are popular means of looking at the overall balance of the game. Though opinionated and usually lacking the nuance that certain match-ups and player skill carries, they’re nonetheless launching points for discussion.

Dora, the ever-popular Bang player from Japan who made it to top 8 at this year’s Evolution, has been active in producing more BlazBlue content. The other day, he got busy creating the latest tier list. The list only used two axes, higher up being top tier and characters below placed as low tier. Therefore, the order in which they are placed doesn’t signify much. Dora doesn’t specify whether there’s a “letter difference” between them, but here are the names typed out:

S: Es, Nine, Platinum, Litchi

A: Rachel, Arakune, Carl, Hakumen, Valkenhayn, Hazama, Kagura, Azrael, Hibiki, Makoto

B: Susano’o, Naoto, Lambda=11, Nu=13, Mu=12, Relius Clover, Tsubaki, Tager

C: Mai, Izanami, Kokonoe, Amane, Izayoi, Noel, Jin, Ragna

D: Celica, Bullet, Terumi, Bang, Taokaka

Jubei isn’t placed.

Dora also stresses that the balance is closer before, so it’s necessarily true that characters like Jin, Izanami, etc. are “C tier.” He called the characters in that row “mid tier.” Overall, there isn’t as much of a difference in power as before.

Dora says that Es is extremely strong now, especially seeing Ronitta’s performance with her. Platinum also saw some recent usage from top players. Though he points out that Ragna is good against Es. Check out the full video below, where Dora starts to talk about his tier list at about 15:00 in.

Marvel at amazing Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R sets from Mikado, featuring Justice, Anji, and more

Time to pull out your canes and tell the youngsters about how good gaming was back in the day… But wait! Are these brand new Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R sets from Mikado we’re seeing?! Why yes! If you’re new to Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 and haven’t seen the game’s predecessor, or you’re yearning to look back at high-level gameplay of this gem again, you’re in for a good time.

The SlashSeries presents three first-to-ten matches between high-level players. First up, we have Hotta’s Justice versus Godolphin’s May. For those who aren’t acquainted, Justice is a reformed boss character who wasn’t tournament-legal in earlier releases of the game. A rather niche character, she can effectively zone with multiple, slow-traveling bombs on the screen. She also has excellent range on some normals but a big hurtbox. May seems even more like a bruiser in this version, with a running command grab and dizzying movement.

Next up is Kesuke’s Testament against Matsui’s Zappa. Neither character made it into Xrd yet, and both are incredibly powerful in this version. Zappa summons random ghosts that significantly alter his playstyle, while Testament zones with a variety of traps and poisons. These are definitely amazing to watch, especially while wishing to not face either of those characters, especially from such skilled players. That time out at 49:00, though!

Lastly, Hotta fights AGF’s Anji. Arguably and most likely the best Anji player, AGF still commands an extremely impressive Anji with all the tech. The FRCs, the burst baits, the combos with the air command grab, On, pressure with Shitsu (the butterfly), he has it all. He does many genius baits to punish Hotta for bursting to steal the rounds. Anji has to work to get in, and AGF does it all while looking like he’s playing a calm game of chess.

Knock out the competition with new Naoto combos in BlazBlue: Central Fiction

Naoto, a brand new character to BlazBlue: Central Fiction, saw some usage in the casual and competitive scene — but maybe not as much as some of us would like. Since the BlazBlue 2.0 patch shook things up, certain characters received not only the buffs they needed, but also the tuning to their tools to open up entirely new combo paths. Naoto seems to be one of those characters.

There’s a multitude of Naoto adjustments: longer active frames on certain moves, bigger hurtboxes, several new gatlings, etc. His new combos give him opportunities to change direction with Phantom Pain. The video from Kamikaze below is an excellent primer of strong confirms that have a lot of hits and high damage. There are some really good examples from anti-air starters and counter hits.
