Same Time Next Year? Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s Future at Evo

Editor’s note: The views expressed in this article are solely those of the writer and do not reflect Shoryuken as a whole.

For all the hype that we saw over Evo weekend regarding Smash 4, many players and attendees were not happy with how Smash 4 was treated over the course of the tournament, with many taking to Twitter to vent their displeasure in both constructive and non-constructive ways. In light of the problems, one of the Evo founders Tony Cannon has made a thread on r/smashbros, addressing the cited issues for Smash 4 and asking for constructive criticism about how to improve next year’s event. Holding your hands up to problems is admirable and despite the drive to improve Smash 4 for future events, I feel that the treatment of Smash 4 during Evo may be symptomatic of how the wider FGC views the game; it simply has not earned its respect yet.

This is not a question of whether Smash 4 deserves it, it’s the fact that outside of the Smash bubble, the community does not have the pull and influence on the FGC that it thinks it does. The lack of a spot on Championship Sunday is most likely due to Smash 4 not having the prestige of Melee and that shunting Melee onto Saturday would do down all of the hard work that community has done to earn the spot. While Melee has had to toil to earn its position among the upper echelon of the fighting game community, Smash 4 has not had to struggle, due to its position as the latest Smash game and its ability to ride the wave of Melee’s resurgence after Evo 2013, which was pivotal in getting Smash to where it is now. As such, Smash 4 now expects to walk to the top spot at non Smash-centric events because of its entrance numbers, rather than due to the work the community has put in over other games that may deserve a Sunday slot. This is not to say that people within Smash 4 aren’t working extraordinarily hard; it’s just that the majority of work is to serve its own community rather than to invite others to join in the fun. Outside of Panda Global, Bear and 2GG, as well as select commentators like D1, TKBreezy and EE who are slaving away to get Smash 4 on the podium alongside Street Fighter, Melee and so on, most other community content is self-serving. There is a severe lack of content which attempts to engage an audience that may not watch every major; instead, it focuses heavily on the dedicated tournament watching/attending crowd.

At the moment, Smash 4 does not have a wide array of personalities, TOs and players who are interacting with the wider FGC to cast a spotlight on why it should be on that Evo Sunday stage with the rest of the heavy hitters. Smash 4 lacks content creators like prog or Tafokints who are doing outreach on sites like Red Bull and ESPN to show the world that this is a game and a community that people should get hype about; instead the community is happy to make things solely for themselves and then complain when things don’t go exactly its way. Players like Dream Team’s ANTi are trying their hand at games like Street Fighter but more needs to be done to get people off the fence and enjoying Smash 4 along with the already dedicated. The actual action at Evo proved that the game can have those amazing moments and matches which should be written into legend, but if no-one outside of the hardcore cares to watch, Smash 4 will be confined to being the warm up act for those bigger games. Yet, rather than shouting about how amazing the action was, most of the top voices are too busy moaning about how Evo was a mess and that they won’t come back. If the only experiences of Smash 4 that the wider FGC experiences is them moaning at every non-Smash event because they didn’t get preferential treatment, it’s not a case of Smash 4 not returning; other communities will not want them back. Be critical and point out ways to improve as there were flaws about the running of Smash 4 at Evo, but these problems should be a galvanising force to make us do better and prove that not giving the community the proper respect is a massive loss, as losing Smash 4 means losing not only intense viewing, but a community that inspires people to play fighting games.

The community’s taking their ball and going home is only going to harm the growing scene because unlike Mortal Kombat or Killer Instinct or Tekken, Smash as a whole lacks something which keeps those games chugging along; developer backing. While Smash does have its own major events like Genesis, Super Smash Con and The Big House, so does every other game on the Evo title card. Killer Instinct has the KI World Cup, Tekken’s got King of the Iron Fist Tournament, Street Fighter obviously has the Pro Tour and while Smash has these big events, they are all funded from the community’s own pocket, with occasional help from outside organisations. That community needs to grow and expand in scope if Nintendo is not going to provide those pot bonuses and big venues so withdrawing from the big FGC stages, where the eyes of the world are on you, is only going to speed stagnation. Smash will eventually stagnate, mark my words, if there isn’t a constant stream of cash from either Nintendo or outside organisations, as other games will rapidly outpace Smash in terms of scope and prize pots. As much as it is quaint to think that the love of the game will keep people competing; top players need to keep food on the table and sponsors need to see Smash as a worthy investment and retreating from some of the world’s largest stages is only going to put people off pumping money in. Sure, Nintendo of America may send setups and retweet a stream or two and I personally know that Nintendo UK does help out with eShop vouchers for smaller tournaments, but the continued lack of a concerted effort by the whole of Nintendo to publicly support Smash with money means that the gears will stop turning eventually. Outside organisations can keep games on life support but that’s just prolonging the inevitable. Melee has a better chance of long-term survival as the game has pretty much become institutionalised in the eyes of the FGC, but unless Nintendo pulls its finger out with the NX and makes a big push to openly support eSports, Smash 4 is especially in danger of being left behind as the eSports train thunders towards the big money.

The attitude towards Evo I think needs to change as well, as this view of it being the tournament of tournaments is not really helping anyone at this point. Rather than seeing it as the world’s biggest stage and the true test of who is the best player, it should instead be viewed as one big advert for why spectators and other FG players should attend your own dedicated tournaments. Rather than being the World Cup, it should be the Olympics; a big show tournament where money isn’t really the objective but showing off your top talent is. The goal should be to convert as many as possible, so that they do come to your own tournaments where you run the proper rulesets and can really show off how the game is played. Moreover, it should be a celebration of fighting games as a whole where everyone meets to enjoy each other’s company, rather than a place where you only stick to your own community. Just look at how many people have been turned to Street Fighter V after LI Joe’s performance at Evo. Those who did not care to look were made to look by just how engaging top level Street Fighter was, by the community reaction, level of play and the storylines which were feeding into the top 8. Smash 4 needs to make itself as equally irresistible, either by producing content for outsiders to fuel the hype, engaging with other communities to get them on side or making the action something that you simply cannot turn away from. It doesn’t matter how many entrants you have to your tournament, if no-one else wants to look in and swell your numbers. Evo 2016 cracked the door open for the rest of the FGC to really hit the big time (just look at the viewing figures for SFV finals on both ESPN 2 and Twitch) so running away from that opportunity now would be colossally stupid.

The Big House 6 Co-Ordinates With Japanese TOs to Provide Two Japanese Qualifiers for TBH6

In an initiative to get more Smashers from Japan over at big American events, the TOs of The Big House 6 has struck a deal with two Japanese tournaments to provide an all-expenses paid trip to TBH6 for the winners of these select events. It’s similar to the prize from KSB 2016, where the winner was given a free trip to any American tournament of their choosing, with the winner of that tournament, Kamemushi, choosing to fly to Evo 2016.

The two tournaments in question will be Sumabato Qualifier for Smash 4 and Master Hand Qualifier for Melee, both held in Osaka. Komorikiri has won a grand total of five Sumabato titles so he could be on track to take the qualifier but other Japanese players like Earth, Kamemushi, You3 and Kie may step into the breach to steal that flight to the US away from him. Sumabato Qualifier is happening this weekend and will be streamed by SHI-Gaming on their Twitch channel.

Japanese Melee is not in the greatest of states, with the Master Hand tournament series acting as the last regular monthly in the whole of the country. With the promise of a trip to the crucible of top-level Melee, there may be a resurgence of Melee players coming out to play for that prize. Grand Finals at Master Hands usually contains either VGBootcamp’s aMSa, Rudolph or Kounotori but hopefully, we may see some lesser known talent take that top spot. Master Hand Qualifier will take place on August 28th.

Super Smash Con Releases Its (Approximate) Entrant Numbers

With Super Smash Con gracing the Dulles Expo Center in just over two weeks’ time, head tournament organizer Robin “Juggleguy” Harn has released the approximate entry numbers for this Super Smash Bros. extravaganza. All tournaments have experienced growth, with Brawl receiving the smallest growth in entrants, going from 121 last year to 150 as of writing. Melee is at 930 entrants, making it the eighth largest Melee tournament of all time while Smash 4 has 1260 entrants, making it the third largest Smash 4 tournament, just after Evo 2016 and Genesis 3.

The breakout game of Super Smash Con 2016 is actually the original game, Super Smash Bros. 64. Entrant numbers have pretty much doubled, going from 154 last year to a whopping 310 at time of writing, making it the largest Smash 64 event in the game’s history. For a community that has been working its socks to keep alive, this is a massive achievement and I encourage everyone to watch the 64 tournament if they can. The commentary and sheer passion for the game shown at Genesis 3 was great to see and I hope more people flock to try out the grandfather of the series. You can check out some of the insane combos 64 players can pull off in this recent trailer, which also announced the special 64 Combo Contest which shall be held at the event.

There will also be the GEICO Gaming sponsored Smash Masters event, which will pit four of the world’s best all-round Smashers in a single competition to determine who is the Grand Smash Master. No matter what game you are attending or watching, each bracket looks stacked and it promises a wonderful weekend of Smash for all players.

The UK Defends Its Throne at Heir 3 on August 19th-21st

The UK is readying itself to fight back against the forces of Europe and the USA at Heir 3, a three day Melee and Project M tournament held at Cripps Hall in Nottingham. Known for its party atmosphere, on-site accommodation and famous pub quiz, Heir 3 is currently now the biggest Melee tournament in Europe’s history, with its PM event being the second largest. Along with Melee and Project M singles and doubles, Heir 3 is home of the only double elimination crew battle event in Europe so if you are willing to gather a crew to prove your country’s worth, Heir 3 is the place to do it.

Alongside UK powerhouses like Professor Pro, Revolution’s Fuzzyness, Alpha Dash, Dev and Mint to name but a few, Europe will be sending heavy hitters like Alliance|Armada, Overtriforce, mYi|Ice, Team Heir’s own Reaper and SDS|Tekk to claim the throne for Europe. Thanks to Heir 3’s compendium reaching its goal, North American players like EMG’s n0ne, VGBC’s Chudat and Kingsman’s The Moon are also making their way to Nottingham to potentially take the crown back across the Atlantic. It’s set to be a great weekend for both Melee and Project M and you can still sign up if you haven’t already, with registration closing on August 1st. On-site accommodation is still available and can be booked over Team Heir’s official website. For those unable to make the pilgrimage to Nottingham, the whole event will be streamed by GeekyGoonSquad and SmashHouseUK so follow them to not miss a minute.

Learn the Ways of the Aegis Reflector in this Street Fighter V Movelist Breakdown for Urien

While Juri is gracing everyone with her presence next Tuesday, eager Urien players still have to wait probably until late August to officially get their hands on the master of the Aegis Reflector. However, this hasn’t stopped PC Street Fighter V players from accessing Urien and experimenting with what this would-be emperor has to offer. AXETB has done just that, providing a comprehensive walkthrough of all of Urien’s normals and specials, as well as showing off some combos that have been discovered so far.

Starting off with your meterless bread and butter combos, the walkthrough slowly escalates to show off combos into Critical Art, some Crush Counter setups to finally end off with some super stylish Aegis Reflector combos which last for ages. The input display is shown on the top of the screen throughout so you can mark down the combos you find most impressive to then practice now or for when Urien releases for everyone. Keep in mind that some of the things shown in this breakdown may be tweaked in time for Urien’s official release so expect to do some experimentation of your own to make sure these combos actually work.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Readies for Battle as 2GGaming Announces the 2GGT: Civil War

2GGaming has followed through on its word and has officially revealed that they will be hosting 2GGT: Civil War some time in the near future. The seed for this tournament was sown just after Get On My Level 2016, following Ally’s victory over TSM ZeRo and the resulting Twitter storm surrounding who would rally behind each player if there was a Marvel-esque Civil War within the world of Super Smash Bros for Wii U. This tournament will have Ally and ZeRo assembling two teams from the world’s best Smashers to fight for supremacy and determine who is the best.

2GGaming will slowly be revealing each of the team members in the run-up to the event but players like Team Liquid’s Nairo, Panda Global’s Trela, Kamemushi, Dream Team’s Dabuz, Mr-R, Team eLevate’s Larry Lurr and Komorikiri have been named as just a few of the players who will be siding with either ZeRo or Ally. While he was mentioned in the trailer, Ranai will not be able to attend the event, due to the difficulty getting time off work to attend locals, let alone majors like this. There are a couple of players missing like Dream Team’s ANTi so we may see a secret third faction step into the fray and add a little chaos to the proceedings.

While I was initially skeptical of the whole Civil War talk on Twitter as a way of creating false hype, I cannot deny that this tournament will be incredible to watch. It will act as Evo round 2 in a way, with 2GGaming being able to run the tournament exactly how they want without the problem of other games conflicting with the schedule. With world class talent coming to support either ZeRo or Ally, it will be a gem of an event no matter what. There isn’t a hard and fast date for the Civil War just yet but I imagine there will be more news coming from Super Smash Con in a few weeks. Check out the trailer below as well as some amazing promo art for the event, courtesy of nips.

Blue Beetle and Wonder Woman Battle it Out in New Trailer for Injustice 2

Introduced during its own panel at San Diego Comic Con, DC Comics and NetherRealm Studios have revealed the next two fighters for Injustice 2, being returning fighter Wonder Woman and brand new addition Blue Beetle. Wonder Woman retains her sword, shield and the famous Lasso of Truth while Blue Beetle utilises the high tech weaponry of his insectoid battle suit to duke it out against his opponent. A PlayStation Blog entry has shed some light on the unique abilites of both fighters, with Wonder Woman being able to deflect incoming fireballs with her Bracelets of Submission, while her new character trait has her calling on the pantheon of Greek gods to aid her in the fight. For example, she can call upon Hermes to give her an air dash and a general mobility boost. For Blue Beetle, NetherRealm must have taken inspiration from D’Vorah, as Blue Beetle’s ability has him summoning blades from the scarab bonded to his spine to stab at incoming opponents. The animation is similar to that of the Swarn Queen from Mortal Kombat X, so look out for more instances of shared animations and traits between the two games.

To use these gnarly looking blades, Blue Beetle must temporarily give up the ability to fire his arm cannons, which allow him to fire quick energy blasts on the ground and in the air. You can toggle the blades on and off as part of his unique character trait. Along with said blades and blasters, Blue Beetle can use his wings to dart around the screen and he can even morph his hands into shields and clubs for massive close up damage. They are using the latest incarnation of Blue Beetle, Jamie Reyes, in Injustice 2 so maybe expect other Teen Titans joining the fray in future trailers. I still hope my main man Booster Gold joins the fray and is able to fight alongside his best mate Blue Beetle.

GGPO netcode and a dedicated Tournament Mode was also announced alongside these two fighters so expect a place for dedicated tournament players to face off without the fear of Gear skewing results in a certain combatant’s direction. Expect more in-depth news about this Tournament Mode, as well as some hands-on impressions of both Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle coming off the show floor in the next day or so.
