SoulCalibur VI features a new “Reversal Edge” mechanic

I’m sure everyone’s soul is still burning after last night’s SoulCalibur VI‘s reveal at the Game Awards. Now that the dust has settled, Bandai Namco have let slip some additional details on their fabled weapon fighter.

If you watched the trailer carefully, you’ll notice there were points where Sophitia’s and Mitsurugi’s weapons were wreathed in red lightning, which allowed them to perform Guard Impact-esque parries and then a powerful counter-attack. This is the new Reversal Edge mechanic which — according to Bandai Namco — allows players to “defend against the opponent’s attack and directly counter with a powerful strike highlighted through a dynamic camera.”

This can be seen in the trailer when Mitsurugi parries an attack by Sophitia, and then unleashes a powered-up two-handed slash in response. The SoulCalibur team have clearly been inspired by Tekken 7’s slow-mo moments, and are putting their own take on it with the Reversal Edge system.

Sophitia is able to parry multiple attacks from Mitsurugi before performing the Reversal Edge counter-strike — suggesting that Reversal Edge is tied to a meter that will allow you to enter this defensive state for a certain amount of time. It’s unknown as this time if the Reversal Edge state has characters auto-parrying oncoming attacks, and whether you can exit out of this state without performing the counter-attack.

We’ve also got confirmation that SoulCalibur VI is acting as a soft reboot of the series, with the game “revisit[ing] events from the original Soul Calibur to uncover hidden secrets.” Seeing as Sophitia was dead in SoulCalibur V and the trailer showed off a young looking Mitsurugi, it makes sense that SCVI would be a prequel of some sort. More characters are set to be announced in the coming months, with the roster being comprised of “fan-favorites and some fierce newcomers.”

Pre-Capcom Cup Wednesday Night Fights results

With Capcom Cup just a day away, the world’s top Street Fighter V players are all concentrated in South California — ready for a weekend’s worth of competition. Some are safely through to the Capcom Cup bracket, while others are limbering up for a tough climb through the Last Chance Qualifier. Acting as a fantastic warm-up before the tournament begins, this week’s Wednesday Night Fights was an international affair.

Players from France, Japan, the UK, South Korea, the Dominican Republic, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates were in attendance — with the Top 8 looking like the finals of a well-attended Ranking event on the Capcom Pro Tour. While the US contenders put on a good show, the combined might of players like Punk, 801 Strider and Pnoy were not able to stop a South East Asia Grand Finals — with the tournament ultimately being won by Infiltration and his Menat.

Infiltration looked on fire throughout his run, winning the tournament from Winners’ Side and defeating players like Punk, Imstilldadaddy, Luffy and Itabashi Zangief on the way. If he is able to keep this momentum up, we could see the Evo 2016 champion triumphant in the Last Chance Qualifier. He also had a choice word to say to Punk at the close of the event — which you can see in the clip below.

RESULTS:

Prepare for the Fighting EX Layer beta with these character movelists and Gougi system breakdown

Along with the excitement of Capcom Cup this weekend, fighting game fans will also be getting access to the long-awaited beta of Fighting EX Layer. With both old-school Street Fighter EX players and brand new faces coming to ARIKA’s fighter, you’ll want to get acquainted with the characters ahead of time. Plus with the new Gougi system, there’s bound to be some confusion when people boot up the beta on December 11th.

Well, ARIKA have thought ahead and release not only the movelists of the beta’s cast, but a brief explanation of Fighting EX Layer‘s controls and Gougi system. Similar to other contemporary fighters, Fighting EX Layer has two control schemes — one for veterans and another for novices. The traditional control scheme has players doing usual DP, 360 and QCF motions, while the new ‘Progressive’ control scheme has shorter commands for “faster inputs”. These “faster inputs” shorten motions like down, down forward, forward into just down forward, while it completely changes the way you input Supers. Rather than performing repeat QCFs, these Progressive Supers have players doing Mortal Kombat or Killer Instinct-esque back forward or up down motions.

FEXL Garuda and Skullomania

To ease people in, ARIKA has simplified the Gougi system for the beta. Players pick from pre-made Gougi “decks,” made up of select power-ups. The Aggro Deck for example, focuses on increasing a player’s damage output, while the Infinity Deck is built around giving a player infinite Super meter. Each Gougi power has a specific condition — like spend 10 bars of Super Meter or avoid damage for six seconds — that must be met before it is activated, so you’ll have to tailor your play-style to fit a certain strategy. The full version of Fighting EX Layer will allow players to create their own Gougi decks, so get theory-crafting once the beta ends!

desk’s Geese Howard combo video for Tekken 7 is anything but predictable

He’s already covered the Master of the Fist in Tekken 7, now desk has set his sights on King of Fear and notorious bad dad, Geese Howard. With Geese having the capability for big damage, as well as flashy extensions through the use of his Max Mode, desk has put together some impressive combos for this showcase.

As with anything made by desk, expect some impressive editing work as Geese clobbers any challengers that dares oppose him. While Geese’s bizarre adventure has him short-hopping between different stages, desk makes sure to finish the video back at the Howard Estate — with a 100% damage combo from the big man himself. If you’re looking for Estate-specific combos, take a look at our special tech round-up, dedicated to the eye-watering strings you can perform on this special stage.

Ho ho ho! Santa Claus is coming to knock seven bells out of the Fight of Gods roster

Just in time for Saint Nicholas’ Day, PQube and Digital Crafter are bringing Santa Claus to Fight of Gods. Kris Kringle is Fight of Gods‘ second free character, with more to come in the future.

Acting as the modern face of Christmas, Santa Claus comes to fight with a sack full of festive weaponry to beat up all those naughty gods and goddesses. Along with slapping his foes up with giant candy canes and Christmas trees, Santa’s Super has him jumping in his sleigh and charging straight into his opponent. Forget grandma, looks like Moses is going to get run over by a reindeer this Christmas.

Along with coal and exploding presents, Santa’s sack does contain one secret gift — but we’ll go on the naughty list if we tell you outright. Santa’s elves have told us that players can get this gift by doing something special on the character select screen, so start experimenting once the Santa patch goes live.

And of course, Santa’s addition means players can have Jesus and Father Christmas fighting it out to discover the true meaning of Christmas — playing fighting games with friends. To that end, Fight of Gods is 33% off on Steam until December 20th, making it a perfect Secret Santa gift for someone this holiday season.

Up and atom! The Atom sizes up the competition in his Injustice 2 intro trailer

After Ed Boon’s usual round of teasing on Twitter, NetherRealm Studios have released the official intro trailer for the shape-shifting superhero, Atom. A world-renowned physicist and a master of his quantum bio-belt, Ryan Choi can shrink down to deliver a subatomic smack down.

The quantum bio-belt allows Atom to change his size at will, with players able to shift between normal size, half size and atomic size. In half size, Atom stands at the height of a crouching character while in atomic size, he is just a speck of blue light running along the bottom of the screen. While he can dodge most attacks in his miniature form, Atom’s offense becomes quite restricted, so don’t be too frightened when you see a tiny blue dot leaping at you.

Atom does have access to a ray-gun alongside his bio-belt, giving him some wild projectiles. Besides a basic energy bolt, his ray-gun can freeze opponents in place, while briefly changing the size of their hitbox. Atom can also place traps on the floor via his special red and blue chemical vials. One vial drop creates a chemical puddle, with a second vial drop causing the puddle to react as a specific trap. You can mix and match vial drops to create different traps, so experiment to see which reaction is the most deadly.

For those who can’t wait to irritate their opponents with his subatomic shenanigans, the Atom joins the Injustice 2 roster on December 12th for Early Access players.

Unlock your true potential with Dragon Ball FighterZ’s Adult Gohan trailer

As the final Dragon Ball FighterZ character trailer ahead of Jump Festa later this month, Bandai Namco have at last shown Adult Gohan in action. Rather than his rage-filled teenage counterpart, this version of Gohan is cool, calm and collected — wielding power to rival that of Super Saiyan 3.

He retains his Mach Kick special from his teenage incarnation, but a lot of the moves shown in this trailer are specific to Adult Gohan. New attacks include the Masenko at his QCF+Ki move, an impact palm which sends the opponent flying to the other side of the screen and a rapid jab attack that leads into an overhead shoulder drop. His Level 3 Super — Ultimate Kamehameha — has him firing an energy beam horizontally, similar to Teen Gohan’s Father Son Kamehameha.

The great mystery that remains with Adult Gohan is still his “Unlock Potential” Super, which augments many of his other moves based on the number of Super bars plowed into it. From this trailer, we have confirmation that activating this Install Super will cause a blowback effect, allowing Gohan to continue a combo via a Super Dash. Besides that though, this trailer did not give us any inclining as to how the power-up works in battle.

Hopefully, Jump Festa will give us details on how all the recently announced characters play, as well as unveiling the rumored final four fighters. Stick with Shoryuken for all the details, once the show starts on December 16th.

Let’s Rock! See Japan’s finest Guilty Gear players face off at Mikado Arcade: Tenkaichi Budoukai Series 3

Hoping to tie up a year’s worth of amazing Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 competition, Mikado Arcade is gearing up for the third series of its Tenkaichi Budoukai. Bringing together eight of Japan’s best Guilty Gear players, this grueling round robin league will see one talented competitor crowned as “The Best Under Heaven.”

If you’re not familiar with the Tenkaichi Budoukai (outside of Dragon Ball), players are split into two groups of four — the Spade League and the Heart League. Within these groups, competitors fight against all other combatants in first-to-10 sets. From each league, the overall winner (based on their match record and win/loss differentials) will go on to a final championship group. There is still hope for the second and third place players though, as they are placed in a single-elimination, first-to-five bracket, with the winner claiming the third spot in the championship group.

As for the groups, they are made up of Guilty Gear legends, threats from outside of Tokyo and recent champions. You can find a full breakdown of each competitor via this Twitlonger, but here are the cliff notes:

Group A

  • Omito (Johnny/Evo 2017 champion)
  • Ogawa (Zato=1/Arc Revo 2017 champion)
  • Zadi (Raven/Runner-up of Pre-Evo Japan 賽 [sài])
  • Haaken (Sol/Top 8 placer from Pre-Evo Japan 賽 [sài])

Group B

  • Nage (Faust/GODSGARDEN 12 champion)
  • Tomo TM57 (Leo/Arc Revo 2017 and Evo 2017 runner-up)
  • Tourio (I-No/Two-time Arc Revo Top 8 placer)
  • Fumo (Elphelt/Jespa Top 8 placer)

Similar to ELEAGUE, these matches will take place over a series of weekends — with the first Group B match taking place on December 16th. For those who wish to tune in live via Twitch, there will be Japanese commentary via Jonio-san, as well as live English commentary, courtesy of our very own Majinobama. If you cannot stay up to catch each set live, every match will be uploaded to the official Mikado Arcade YouTube channel.

For the preliminary match schedule, check out this Twitlonger but stay locked to either Jonio-san or Majinobama‘s Twitter accounts for all the latest updates on Tenkaichi Budoukai Series 3. Whether you’re a Guilty Gear veteran or a casual spectator, you do not want miss this league.
