Killer Instinct is 50% off on Steam, in celebration of its fourth birthday

It’s been four years since the launch of the Xbox One and more importantly, four years since Killer Instinct was brought back from the dead by Double Helix. Since then, we’ve have three seasons, three Evos, two Killer Instinct World Cups and most recently, KI’s long-awaited launch on Steam. So to celebrate its fourth birthday, Killer Instinct is currently half price on Steam, going for $19.99.

That’s not all though, as Iron Galaxy are holding a grand Killer Instinct raffle to give out various prizes. All you have to do to enter this giveaway is to earn an achievement between now and next Friday — this can be on Steam, Xbox One or Windows 10. Simply post proof of you unlocking an achievement (or a screenshot of your completed achievement list if you’re a score hunter) to this thread on the KI forums to be entered for a chance to win.

The grand prize is a Killer Instinct-themed fight stick, a Shadow Jago statue from Ultimate Source and a KI t-shirt from Eighty Sixed. Other prizes include signed copies of the Killer Instinct comic, a Shadow Jago statue and various other KI goodies, so get achievement hunting!

The Battle for the Stones finals will not use the December 5th patch of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Dante mains can breathe a sigh of relief, as Capcom has announced today that the Battle for the Stones finals will not use the incoming December 5th patch of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. While it could have been the ultimate test of whether players can adapt to new situations with little preparation time, Capcom wants the players to compete on “the version they’ve had the most time with.”

So Dante and the Reality Stone get one last hurrah before they are nerfed into the dirt by the new patch. However, I think Capcom should now change one of the circuit’s Stone effects to force players to switch to the patched version of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite for just one game…

The final set of 2017 DLC characters and the “Dante Must Die” balance patch both launch on December 5th, so qualified players should take their consoles offline, to avoid accidentally updating their games!

The Dragon Ball FighterZ website now has character profiles for Kid Buu, adult Gohan and Gotenks

After their reveal in V-Jump last week, the Dragon Ball FighterZ website has been updated with the official character profiles for Kid Buu, Ultimate Gohan and Gotenks. While most of the information in these profiles is the same as what was in V-Jump, we’ve got a little more on how Gohan’s “Unlock Potential” Super works.

Rather than just being a flat power-up, this Install Super changes the functions of certain moves. I imagine the amount of augmented moves will change based on the number of Super bars you use for this Super — so one bar may only power up your standard Kamehameha, while using all seven bars will boost every one of Gohan’s moves.

This website update also included more information on Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s Arcade Mode, and it may have sunk the theory that Hit was hidden in that V-Jump screen. The website shows a high-quality version of the same screen that was in V-Jump, and you can clearly see that it is Ginyu, not Hit on the Arcade Mode path. If you want to see translated versions of the character profiles and the Arcade Mode information, head on over to ShonenGamez.

For those expecting to play Dragon Ball FighterZ at PlayStation Experience, you’re going to be a bit disappointed. Not only is DBFZ not on the list of playable games, but Bandai Namco is not even listed as an exhibitor at the show. Don’t worry about not getting your DBFZ info fix for December though, as the anime-centric Jump Festa happens a week after, where Bandai Namco are planned to show off their line-up for 2018.

Fu-sion-ha! Gotenks explodes onto the scene in this Dragon Ball FighterZ trailer

Start practicing the Fusion Dance, as Bandai Namco have released Gotenks’ character trailer for Dragon Ball FighterZ. A fusion of Goten and Trunks, this pint-sized powerhouse uses a mix of blinding speed and wacky attacks to overpower their opponents. Gotenks seems capable at range with moves like his Revenge Cannon and Continuous Die Die Missile, along with his signature Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack.

He also has a ranged command grab with his Galactic Donut, which pops opponents up into the air which could also for a Z-Change combo or a Vanish extension. Gotenks can of course fight up close, with his Rolling Thunder Punch and Daikaiten Kick setting up for juggles if you catch an opponent off-guard. When paired with another projectile-heavy character like Freeza, Gotenks looks be a super-annoying opponent to deal with.

Expect trailers for Kid Buu and Ultimate Gohan within the next week or so!

Venom, Winter Soldier, and Black Widow join Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite on December 5th

The final three DLC characters from Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite‘s 2017 Character Pass — Venom, Winter Soldier and Black Widow — are joining the party on December 5th. Launching alongside the “Dante Must Die” balance patch, these three Marvel representatives are joining the fight with plenty of firepower backing them up.

Winter Soldier is the most heavily-armed of the three, coming into battle with guns and grenades galore. His two main weapons are a pistol and an assault rifle, along with various explosives to keep his opponent at bay. When you want to switch from zoning, Bucky’s metal arm packs quite the punch, with arm attacks bestowing the Winter Soldier with tons of armor. If you’re a Chris player who needs more mobility, the Winter Soldier could be your new best friend.

Black Widow also comes equipped with plenty of gadgets, bringing shock gloves, stun batons and timed sticky explosives to the fight. Somewhat similar to UMvC3’s Jill in terms of movement, Black Widow can flip and even grapple around the screen using a hook hidden within her gloves. Agent Romanov can briefly stun her opponents as well, allowing her to set up for a normal or tag combo. With an air throw super and multiple ways to mix you up, be prepared for some disgusting set-play from Black Widow.

Rounding out this DLC pack, Venom’s multi-hitting Symbiote attacks and web grapples make him a threat at any range. Venom can now set up traps using the Symbiote, with the writhing black mass erupting from the ground to capture opponents — Zato=1 players should be right at home with this lumbering beast.

All three characters will launch on December 5th — it is unknown at this time if they will be playable at Battle for the Stones, along with the new balance patch. If they are, expect some devious counter-picks as some players try out their Day 5 Black Widow on the main stage.

Early 2018 is going to be mighty busy for anime fighter fans, as PQube have just announced that Under Night In-Birth EXE:Late[st] (or UNIST for short) will be launching in Europe on February 9th. Launching simultaneously for PS3, PS4 and PS Vita, this long-awaited fan favorite boasts some of the coolest character designs in fighting games at the moment, along with the best tutorial and practice suite.

For dedicated fans, Rice Digital are also releasing a special “End of Dawn” Edition of UNIST, complete with a copy of the game’s soundtrack, an artbook and a 20-piece badge collection for each of UNIST’s fighters. Pre-orders are currently available on the Rice Digital store, with the Collector’s Edition going for £54.99.

UNIST Collector's Edition

As for UNIST fans in the US, expect a release date announcement at PlayStation Experience, where the game is playable on the show floor. With fighting game developers trying to ensure regional parity on launch, I wouldn’t be surprised if the North American version of UNIST also launched on February 9th.

Get a glimpse at Street Fighter V’s brand new V-Triggers in this special Arcade Edition trailer

To hype up fans for Capcom Cup and PlayStation Experience, Capcom have dropped a new Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition trailer, showing off some of the new V-Triggers you’ll see this coming January. Some of them are subtle remixes of old V-Triggers — Guile for example powers up his legs instead of his arms, giving him access to chain Flash Kicks — while others are brand new, like Ibuki summoning a giant shuriken to cross opponents up.

Just from the few on show, Birdie gaining use of his chain as a long-range sweep and Nadeshiko coming in with the steel chair are my favorites, but the return of Bison’s Psycho Crusher will get Dictator mains excited. There were some notable characters missing from this showcase — we didn’t get to see what is going to replace Urien’s Aegis Reflector — but these new V-Triggers do look like they will spice up Street Fighter V’s combat.

If you’re chomping at the bit to try these new V-Triggers out, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition will be playable at PlayStation Experience. But one question still remains: where was the Season 3 character announcement? Well, if you looked closely at the Capcom Cup slide that played after the AE trailer, you could see sakura petals flying across the screen. Besides Muay Thai juggernaut Sagat, Sakura is the other character whose name has appeared most in leaks/rumors relating to Season 3, so keep your fingers crossed.

It’s a family affair: Red Bull Esports profiles FGC power couple Marcus “The Cool Kid 93” Redmond and Joy Goodwin

After his hype-inducing run at Red Bull Battle Grounds’ Last Chance Qualifier, you’ll probably want to know more about Marcus “The Cool Kid 93” Redmond. A pillar of the Chicago Street Fighter community, the former Alex main has really found his feet with Abigail, smashing up both the LCQ and Red Bull Proving Grounds with the Mad Gear gang boss.

While Redmond is tearing it up on the sticks, he’s got someone cheering out in the crowd. Redmond’s wife — Joy Goodwin — is his most ardent supporter, screaming her lungs out in support for her husband and to trash-talk his opponent. Inspired by the duo, Red Bull Esports have created a short profile of the two, following them through Red Bull Proving Grounds earlier this year. Goodwin is not a gamer herself but she is not only appreciative of the positive community surrounding the game, but proud of her husband’s work ethic and drive to be the best there is.

Goodwin was unfortunately not there to see her husband’s victory live last night, but Red Bull are flying her in today especially so she can provide her full support. Expect to hear her enthusiastic cheers on stream tonight as The Cool Kid 93 battles Punk in the first round of the CPT North America Regional Finals.

Overcome tricky overheads with episode 8 of “Exploring Fighting Games”

Successfully reacting to an overhead can be one of the toughest things to do in a fighting game. Even when you know one is coming after a knockdown, a combination of fear, doubt and panic can mean you’re eating that 28-frame overhead. Sometimes these moves feel too quick to react to, especially when playing online.

To stop players getting hit by these reactable overheads, the Chemical Lovers have dedicated the latest episode of “Exploring Fighting Games” to dealing with these moves. Rather than speeding up your reaction time or beating yourself up every time you get hit, they advocate learning the attributes of each of these command overheads so you know when someone is going to throw one out.

This means looking at your range relative to the opponent, learning whether the overhead can lead into a follow-up, if the overhead has a drastically different animation to other command moves, whether it’s punishable on block and so on. You can also take stock of your opponent’s habits and notice if they have a pattern of throwing out overheads if they are ahead/panicking. It may be hard to keep track of all of these things during a tense set, but just keeping track of two or three of these factors can mean you dodge that overhead that would have lost you the set.

The next episode of “Exploring Fighting Games” is going to ruffle some feathers as the Chemical Lovers try to answer a question that has caused no end of flame wars: is Super Smash Bros. a fighting game? And why is it so important that it is or isn’t?
