The New York Yankees are taking a swing at esports by joining up with Echo Fox via an “investor partnership”

Just as the Miami HEAT has a “strategic partnership” with Misfits, the New York Yankees are now taking a swing at esports thanks to a recently announced investor partnership. This partnership sees the baseball team allying with Vision Esports, a company that holds majority share in franchises like Twin Galaxies, Vision Entertainment and most importantly for the FGC, Echo Fox.

The size of the investment has not been disclosed, but the goal is to “accelerate the growth and increase the global brand awareness” for Vision Esports’ franchises, according to Forbes. Seeing as the Yankees have become their own brand outside of baseball, expect this partnership to result in more Echo Fox merch in the future. I’m hoping for Tokido-branded tape measures to be available this Christmas.

What this will mean for the FGC remains to be seen, but it signals that there is some serious money being funneled into keeping the esports dream alive. With Echo Fox’s FGC roster already dominating Tekken, NRS games, Street Fighter and Marvel, it’s a wonder where they will go next. Fingers crossed for them holding their own fighting game event inside Yankee Stadium.

Taito’s arcade port of Street Fighter V will be playable at Toushinsai this weekend

Announced earlier this month by Taito, the company will be running a special location test for their arcade port of Street Fighter V at Toushinsai this weekend. Shown off in a CapcomTV feature, these custom cabinets will be playable at the event, with Taito running a tournament on Sunday for those in attendance.

This mini-tournament will be streamed via a dedicated Toushinsai Twitch channel, so you can tune in to see how these specialist cabinets function. Based on the CapcomTV footage, the cabinets are just computers running the Steam version of Street Fighter V, with each cabinet pair playing in a private Battle Lounge. You can actually look up these accounts on CFN — they are listed as Toushinsai_01, Toushinsai_02 and so on.

Should Toushinsai attendees respond well to this location test, we may see Street Fighter actually returning to its arcade roots — rather than Capcom just releasing something titled “Arcade Edition.”

V-Jump reveals information about the RPG mechanics and plot of Dragon Ball FighterZ’s Story Mode

As you saw with the reveal of Captain Ginyu and Nappa yesterday, the latest issue of V-Jump has been a Dragon Ball FighterZ info blowout. Along with showing off these two new characters, this issue has finally given fans some concrete details on DBFZ’s Story Mode, including hints at the plot and some of the special mechanics that will exist in this “what-if” story.

If you read our article on Christopher Sabat’s Game Informer interview about Dragon Ball FighterZ, you will know that Bandai Namco and Arc System Works are leaning heavily on the fourth wall when it comes to the Story Mode. Well, it turns out that the plot revolves around each of the Z-Warriors falling unconscious, and waking up with the player in control of them. It’s your goal to get to the bottom of this mystery, while gathering all of the Z-Fighters together to battle the mysterious clone army, as seen in the initial Story Mode trailer.

The plot reminds me a lot of the spin-off manga The Case of Being Reincarnated as Yamcha, where an avid Dragon Ball fan wakes up in the body of Yamcha and uses his knowledge of the DBZ story to defeat every villain. Hopefully, the Yamcha portion of the story may reference this for the hardcore DB fans out there.

As for what you do in Story Mode, players hop around a world map, defeating enemies and gaining XP as you go. You can use XP to either unlock special Story Mode only skills or simply to level your characters up to the highest point. If you use certain characters for long enough, you can start to listen in on their inner thoughts and hear what they’re really thinking.

Finally, V-Jump reveals that the Story Mode is actually split into three separate scenarios. The main scenario has you following Goku and the Z-Warriors, the second has you taking over Freeza’s body while the final scenario has the players linking up with Android 18. The Freeza scenario looks to be the dedicated “gag” scenario, while Android 18’s scenario has her exploring “hidden memories” about her past. This will no doubt delve into how she and 17 met Dr. Gero and maybe her link to the mysterious Android 21.

You can check out all of the Story Mode scans below, which have been graciously translated by ShonenGamez. Dragon Ball FighterZ is scheduled to launch February 1st 2018 in Japan, so expect news on a Western release date sometime in the near future.

Avoid future slip-ups against Diddy Kong with the Beefy Smash Doods’ guide for dealing with the banana

Diddy Kong’s Banana Toss is one of the most maligned moves in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. As a pressure tool, a trap and a combo starter, the banana can strike fear into the heart of any Smasher, regardless of their skill level. To stop any future slip-ups, the Beefy Smash Doods have created a special anti-banana guide (something I’d never thought I’d write) so players can better deal with Diddy’s devilish projectile.

Certain characters can dash straight over Diddy’s banana peel, as the opening frames of their dash animation actually have their feet floating off the ground. Captain Falcon, Mario, Luigi, Dr. Mario, Link, Jigglypuff, Charizard, Wii Fit Trainer, Mewtwo, Samus and Diddy can all dash over the banana. For some characters, it is impossible to dash over the banana if you’re standing on the left side of the screen.

If you’re not one of these select few characters, certain aerial moves can clash with the banana peel, destroying the projectile and cancelling the recovery frames of that move. Sheik players commonly do this with down air, but most other characters are capable of this tactic as well. Experiment with your main and see what moves can neutralize this pesky peel.

Celebrate 30 years of Street Fighter with this commemorative coin, courtesy of Smart Arts Gallery

With Street Fighter celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, dedicated World Warriors may be looking for a memento to add to their collection. Seeing as Street Fighter was birthed in the arcades, what better way to celebrate its long history, than with a commemorative silver coin.

Made by Smart Arts Gallery, this commemorative token comes embossed with Ryu’s face and Street Fighter II win quote (correctly translated, no Sheng Long here!) on the front, and the 30th anniversary logo on the back. Only 5000 of these coins will be minted, so best place your order now to avoid disappointment. They cost £12 (around $16) and will be shipped by Smart Arts Gallery on November 1st, arriving in time to be a stocking stuffer for any Street Fighter aficionado.

Sharpen your swords for 2GGC: MKLeo Saga, coming to Esports Arena on November 4th

Following Fire Emblem Saga this weekend, 2GGaming and Esports Arena have announced that the final Saga before the 2GG Championship will be 2GGC: MKLeo Saga. Dedicated to the lion of Mexico and swordsman supreme MVG|FOX|MKLeo, this will be the final chance for someone to break the infamous Saga Curse before this year’s Championship.

With the Curse currently 19-0, having defeated greats like NRG|Nairo and TSM|ZeRo, Leo has the chips stacked against him if he wants to be the man to break the spell. He couldn’t do it at Fire Emblem Saga, so he’ll have to dig deep if he wants to lay the Curse to rest at his own event.

Following Fire Emblem Saga last weekend, where MVG|Salem took the gold against Nairo, the 2GGC Leaderboard has experienced quite the shake-up. Salem surged into second place, bumping Dabuz down to third and 2GG|komorikiri to fourth. Japan tightens its grip on the bottom spots of the top 16 with T, KEN, Shuton and Kirihara holding onto the 12th, 13th, 14th and 16th spots respectively. With big hitters like bc|Mr. R, Ranai and IMT|ANTi currently out of the running for the Championship Finals, expect an influx of players making a pilgrimage to the Esports Arena come November 4th for one last throw of the dice, before the Last Chance Qualifier in December.

Registration is now available over on smash.gg and make sure to check out the current 2GGC standings to see who is in the danger zone.

Walk the path of the ninja with this breakdown of Zeku’s movelist in Street Fighter V

Following his reveal at South East Asia Major over the weekend, wannabe ninja are scrambling to find out more information on the Ever-Changing Ninja, Zeku. Luckily, Capcom have been on the ball for this character reveal, and have compiled a comprehensive breakdown of all of Zeku’s moves.

First off, let’s tackle the whole Young/Old Zeku transformation. Zeku is Street Fighter V‘s first stance character, with the gentleman ninja being able to switch stances mid-fight by pressing Down, Down with two punches. While it can be done by itself, Zeku can combo into his stance switch off of his V-Skill, as seen in his character reveal trailer.

For Old Zeku, he is focused around keeping the opponent out with his Bushin Gram kicks. There are three variations of the kick: one hits medium, one hits high and the other one acts as an anti-air. He also has his Bushin Jakura flip, which has three variations, being a punch, a kick and a command grab.

Old Zeku Movelist

If you were a Guy player back in Street Fighter IV, Young Zeku will be right up your street. Like Guy, he has several target combos for reliable damage, as well as a wall jump and a Hayagake command run. He also has access to the Hozanto shoulder bash, along with an air grab which is used extensively in his character trailer.

Young Zeku Movelist

As for his V-Trigger, Zeku gains access to the special Idaten command dash. This teleporting dash has different frame data depending on whether you use Old or Young Zeku — but both can attack out of the dash. If you land a hit during Idaten, Zeku can combo together normals of ascending strength. Both forms have a unique ender which can be used to finish off the Idaten combo, so experiment to see what sequences you can come up with when Zeku launches on October 24th.

Vegeta’s English voice actor, Christopher Sabat, reveals more about Dragon Ball FighterZ’s Story Mode

Continuing their month-long coverage of Dragon Ball FighterZ, Game Informer got to chat with veteran voice actor, Christopher Sabat about his history with the Dragon Ball franchise. As the voice of Vegeta, Piccolo and Yamcha — as well as the VO producer for Dragon Ball Z and Super — it’s fair to say he knows a little bit about the series. During his interview with Game Informer, he let slip some interesting details about Dragon Ball FighterZ and its Story Mode.

The most obvious bit of news is that Dragon Ball FighterZ will be feature the Funimation English voice cast, with actors like Sabat, Sean Schemmel and Kyle Hebert reprising their roles from the show. According to Sabat, the actual Story Mode does “some very clever stuff” with the cast, with characters often breaking the fourth wall to talk about the action going on on screen.

For example, Yamcha even thanks the player for making him look so cool in battle, meaning that the characters are conscious that they are being controlled by a third party. Bandai Namco and Arc System Works seem to be leaning into the comedic aspect of this non-canon story, which should make for some great moments.

As for the voice of new character Android 21, Sabat reveals that she will be voiced by Jeannie Tirado whose only previous role in Dragon Ball has been the voice of Baby Pan. She’s no stranger to voice acting though, having voiced Sol in SMITE, Zera in Fairy Tail and Clemm in Tales of Zestiria The X.

Besides that, Sabat kept tight-lipped about any other aspects of Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s Story Mode, and any other characters that may be popping up in the game. With Paris Games Week at the end of this month and then PSX in December, I’d expect for more character reveals before 2017 is over.

Zeku, the Ever-Changing Ninja comes to Street Fighter V on October 24th

In a reveal nobody saw coming, the final character for Season 2 of Street Fighter V is indeed Zeku, the Ever-Changing Ninja. While he may look old, this grandmaster and Guy’s former sensei is still in control of his ninja reflexes, flipping all over the screen to mix up his opponent.

He’s also got great range on some of his kick specials, leaving behind a trail of ink which can tag the opponent. Similar to Akuma’s Demon Flip, Zeku also has a high flying flip move, which can lead into a command grab or a overhead kick in its EX version.

Zeku’s V-Trigger looks to greatly increase his mobility, giving him access to a M. Bison-esque teleport dash. By using a certain special, Zeku teleports away and then reappears from the top of the screen, changing outfits and seemingly ages in the process. If you are using Zeku’s base costume, his outfit change will have him looking like another famous Capcom ninja — Strider Hiryu. When in his Strider stance, Zeku looks to get a brand new set of specials, including a rekka chain which appears similar to Karin’s Guren-Ken.

This gentleman ninja comes with two sets of Battle, Story and Premium costumes — one set for his older form and another for his younger self. Expect a full breakdown of Zeku’s specials, V-Skill and V-Trigger from Capcom Unity in the coming days, and you’ll be able to get your hands on this shape-shifting shinobi on October 24th.

CLG teases their new Melee documentary, following SFAT at The Big House 7

We’ve had various documentaries on the Gods and the Godslayer — it’s time for a documentary on one of Melee’s demi-gods. Ahead of its release in next week, esports organization CLG have released a trailer for their mini-doc, following top NorCal Fox and MIOM rank eight SFAT at The Big House 7.

As well as tailing him as he competes in both Melee singles and doubles, this documentary has SFAT talking to camera, discussing his thoughts on the idea of the Melee gods. He’s personally not a fan, as the title god builds up this image of these players being unbeatable beings — something that SFAT has himself proved to be wrong, having defeated three of the gods during his Melee career.

The documentary titled “SFAT – The Non Believer” will be available to watch via the CLG YouTube channel on Tuesday October 17th.
