Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite producers talk about Story Mode, Thanos, and flashy team combos

With Gamescom hoping to reveal loads more about Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Capcom have released a quick interview ahead of the show to talk about the game’s Story Mode, the return of mad titan Thanos, and the flashiest team combos that they have seen so far.

The Story Mode demo that was released during E3 is the first 25 minutes of the game, with it introducing all of the core cast, main villain Ultron-Sigma, and Thanos himself. As you can imagine, Thanos is a reluctant ally of the Marvel and Capcom heroes, so expect him to double-cross you sometime during Story Mode.

According to producer Mike Evans, the flashiest team in the current build of MvC:I is Dante and Gamora, thanks to their massive movesets and ability to mix up your opponent eight ways to Sunday. Assistant producer Peter “ComboFiend” Rosas also picked Dante, but paired him with machine maniac Ultron, because of his fly-unfly combos.

They also briefly discussed adding Yoshinori Ono as a playable character, with Blanka acting as a Groot-like assist during his Hyper Combos. He even glides past the camera when he’s mentioned by the producers — someone must have him as their Assist.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT’s closed beta runs from August 26th to September 4th

Hot off the announcement of Jecht joining the Dissidia Final Fantasy NT roster, Square Enix have revealed the dates for the 3v3 brawler’s closed beta. It will begin at 9:00 AM PDT on August 26th, and will run until 9:00 AM PDT on September 4th. Here are the 14 playable fighters that will be available in the beta:

  • Warrior of Light (Final Fantasy)
  • Firion (Final Fantasy II)
  • Onion Knight (Final Fantasy III)
  • Cecil Harvey (Final Fantasy IV)
  • Bartz Klauser (Final Fantasy V)
  • Terra Branford (Final Fantasy VI)
  • Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)
  • Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII)
  • Zidane Tribal (Final Fantasy IX)
  • Tidus (Final Fantasy X)
  • Shanotto (Final Fantasy XI)
  • Vaan (Final Fantasy XII)
  • Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII)
  • Y’sholta (Final Fantasy XIV)

Unfortunately, the beta is strictly good guy versus good guy, so those looking to play as Exdeath or Sephiroth will be disappointed. If you attended Sunday finals of Evo, you should hopefully still have your Dissidia Final Fantasy NT beta code, while everyone else will have to sign up online. The Red Bull Proving Grounds Finals comes to Chicago on October 21st

Moving from Santa Monica to Chicago, the season finale for this year’s Red Bull Proving Grounds will see 12 teams from around the USA competing to be the best region in the country. Hosted at Joe’s Live Rosemont, teams will face off in 3v3 battles until one group is left standing. Similar to last year, the winning team will not only receive bragging rights, but a free trip to compete in the Capcom Pro Tour North America Finals at Red Bull Battle Grounds.

The big change is that this year’s Proving Grounds Finals will be open to the public, meaning Street Fighter V fans from all around the country can come support their team. What’s more, entry will be free so fly out your entire local scene to cheer for your friends.

There are still plenty of regional stops on the Proving Grounds tour before the Chicago finals, so get out there and prove your region is the best at Street Fighter V!

See the UK’s finest Street Fighter V players battle it out at the WSO Open on August 20th

Hosted at the new Belong Gaming center in London’s West End, WinnerStaysOn has evolved from regular sessions in the Capcom UK office to its own bimonthly tournament series. Titled the WSO Open, this Street Fighter V circuit sees many of London’s top Street Fighter players battling it out for points and prizes.

Regular faces from the WSO Sessions like Problem X, Infused|Afii, Method|Packz, Shakz, Tyrant and Hurricane often feature at the WSO Open, making it the place to watch the growth of London’s Street Fighter scene. At the end of the WSO season, the top ranked player who hasn’t already qualified for Capcom Cup will be flown out to compete in the Capcom Cup last chance qualifier.

The next WSO Open is set to take place on August 20th, so make sure to check in via its official Facebook page if you are planning to attend. If you aren’t able to make it all the way to London, all the action will be streamed via the WinnerStaysOn Twitch channel.

Jecht joins the Dissidia Final Fantasy NT roster

Announced via one of Square Enix’s marathon Dissidia Final Fantasy NT livestreams, Final Fantasy X‘s Jecht has been revealed as the next character to join the game’s roster. A star Blitzball player and Tidus’ abusive father, Jecht excels at overwhelming his opponents through a combination of powerful punches and flaming sword slashes.

All of his attacks can be charged up, which can add extra hits, increase their range or allow Jecht to break through an opponent’s block. Players can further beef up Jecht’s massive damage by correctly timing button presses during his combos, making him the strongest pound-for-pound melee attacker in Dissidia NT.

Along with his strong offense, Jecht can easily stop other frontline fighters through the use of his Jecht Block. This parry move deflects almost any attack, even those with guard crush capabilities. If Jecht gets in on you, don’t be surprised if you lose your entire life bar.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is scheduled to launch on PS4 in early 2018, with a closed beta happening later this year.

Gundam Versus gets an open beta, running from September 2nd-4th

Good news Mobile Suit fans, Bandai Namco will be running an open beta test of Gundam Versus ahead of its September 29th release. The beta will open midnight on September 2nd and run until midnight on September 4th, with players being able to pre-load the beta on August 29th.

The beta will feature the following modes:

  • Online player matches
  • Online casual matches in either 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3
  • Ultimate Battle mode, with 15 mission playable online and 30 offline
  • Trial Battle mode, with one mission route available
  • Offline Free Battle

There will also be a short tutorial to teach players the basics before they go out into the badlands of online play. If you want our early impressions of Gundam Versus, you can check out our preview from AnimEvo back in July.

ROX Gaming enters the FGC by signing Tekken pro Jaemin “Knee” Bae

Known mainly for their League of Legends team ROX Tigers, South Korean esports organization ROX Gaming is entering the FGC by signing veteran Tekken pro Jaemin “Knee” Bae. Some regard Knee as the greatest Tekken player of all time, being one of the players who cut their teeth in Korea’s legendary Green Arcade.

He’s certainly earned his stripes in Tekken 7, gaining third at Evo 2017 and being in the top five on the Asia-Pacific leaderboard for the Tekken World Tour. Along with Echo Fox’s Saint and JDCR, Korea is becoming the country to beat in competitive Tekken.

“We were impressed with Knee’s consistent level of play and his ability to perform at the highest level for over a decade now. With the Tekken World Tour being announced this year, it was a no brainer to pick him up to represent our organization. His personality, skill level, and class all align with the ideals that ROX instills in its players and teams,” says Eliot Namgung, director of esports for ROX Gaming.

Hopefully, Knee’s signing will inspire other big Korean esports organizations to start picking up players within the FGC. Could we see SKT finally joining the fray soon?

Registration is still open for the Pokkén World Championship last chance qualifier

With the Pokémon World Championships fast approaching, there is still time left to register for the Pokkén Tournament last chance qualifier. This final qualifying event will take place on August 18th, with the top four players being invited back to compete in the World Finals on the following day. With $20,000 up for grabs, it’s definitely worth entering if you are in the Anaheim area.

Registration costs $30, with competitors receiving a spectator pass for the rest of the World Championship events, along with six Pokémon TCG booster packs as a little extra bonus. The tournament is double-elimination like most FGC events, but the only permitted controller is the special HORI Pokkén fight-pad. If you’re a dedicated Wii U Pro Controller player, better get onto eBay and start looking for a tournament legal controller.

If you cannot make it to Anaheim, there are still several Pokkén tournaments going on throughout the year, with several receiving a $1000 pot bonus courtesy of Evo. Once Pokkén Tournament DX launches in September, expect a load of new Trainers to join the Pokkén scene.

TeamSoloMid follow Leffen’s Evo journey with new series “Hjelte”

Joining other esports organizations in creating Melee player documentaries, TeamSoloMid have just released a trailer for new three-part series “Hjelte”, which tracks William “Leffen “Hjelte’s time at this year’s Evo. Along with showing the quieter moments between tournament sets, this documentary has interviews with Leffen’s friends and rivals within the community, in order to show what the community thinks of Melee’s main villain.

While the main focus is Leffen’s Evo journey, the documentary will seek to explore the Melee scene as a whole, as well as cover Leffen’s life before and after this year’s Evo. According to TSM’s video producer, the series will be coming “very, very soon“, so expect something before the end of August.

South East Asia Major 2017 returns to Singapore from October 14th-15th

After its success last year, South East Asia Major is returning to Singapore for 2017, running from October 14th-15th in Suntec City. Not only is SEAM hosting the Asia Regional Finals for the Capcom Pro Tour, but it acts as the Asia-Pacific Regional Championship for the Tekken World Tour and the Windjammers Asia Championships.

Over $50,000 will be up for grabs at South East Asia Major, as well as spots at Capcom Cup and the Tekken World Tour finals at the end of this year. Don’t worry if you’re not a Street Fighter V, Tekken 7 or Windjammers player, SEAM 2017 will also being holding tournaments for Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, BlazBlue Central Fiction and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

Do keep in mind that these Regional Finals are area-locked, so don’t expect a player from Europe or North America flying in to take qualifier spots. All of South East Asia will be out in force to prove themselves on the region’s largest stage. Registration is not available just yet, but stay tuned for more information on SEAM 2017.
