2GG teams up with Level|Up Series for 2GGC: SCR Saga

In a massive collaboration between two FGC institutions in SoCal, 2GGaming and Level|Up Series are joining forces for 2GGC: SCR Saga. Running from August 19th-20th, this two-day event will be the first Saga to feature games like Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Injustice 2 and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

With it being the host for both Mega Smash Mondays and Wednesday Night Fights, Esports Arena are adding a $5000 pot bonus to sweeten the deal for anyone hoping to attend SCR Saga. Keeping with the theme of crossing Smash with traditional fighters, SCR Saga will also feature a compendium to bring the world’s best Ryu players to compete at the Esports Arena. Expect players like takera, Chanshu, Venom, Patrino, Locus, and Dunkmaster Ragna on that list of potential World Warriors making the trip to SoCal.

As always, all the sign-up information is available on smash.gg. With only four Sagas left until the 2GG Championship, you should take any chance you have to build up some precious circuit points.

Prepare yourself for the 2GG Championship with this hype trailer from False

With only three Sagas left to go before the main event, things are getting awfully tense on the 2GGC Circuit. Many auto-qualifier spots have been taken by TSM|ZeRo and once you get past the top two, everyone is pretty close when it comes to their points totals. To hype up the event, Rush Hour Smash’s False has composed a short trailer to show how much is on the line at 2GG Championship Saga.

With $50,000 at stake and only a few chances left for players to qualify, expect fighting to be at its fiercest during the next three Sagas. 2GG Championship Saga will take place on December 1st at the Esports Arena in Santa Ana. You can check the tournament standings here and see if your favorite player has secured a place in that final bracket.

Compete for a share of $100,000 at GameTyrant Expo, running from September 29th-October 1st in Salt Lake City, Utah

With the FGC growing ever more esports, it’s only natural that stadiums and prize pots would be getting bigger. Offering a $100,000 total prize pot with $60,000 of that being dedicated to both Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Melee, GameTyrant Expo is a tournament that Smashers can’t afford to miss.

GT-X will take place from September 29th to October 1st, with the tournament taking over the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. While Smash 4 and Melee will act as the headlining games, GameTyrant Expo will also be holding events for:

  • Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite
  • Street Fighter V
  • Injustice 2
  • Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2
  • Tekken 7

With it having one of the largest prize pots in Smash’s history, it is no surprise that the entire upper echelon of both Smash 4 and Melee have signed up to attend GT-X. If you are interested in attending this landmark event, early bird registration lasts up until July 31st, with standard registration being open until August 29th.

Capcom Fighters interview Smug about Evo 2017, his match against Abao and how to improve Balrog

Following their talk with Evo 2017 champion Tokido, Capcom Fighters have released another interview from the show, with community manager Matt Edwards talking to Duff City mayor RISE|Smug. Alongside discussing Smug’s history with fighting games, Edwards asks how Smug would improve Balrog, what he learned from his loss to Qanba|Abao and the backstory behind his rivalry with Infused|Imstilldadaddy.

Before Evo, Smug admits that he didn’t really study his opponents before a tournament — he would just jump into the match and hope for the best. That strategy came back to bite him against Abao, who clearly had prepared for the Balrog match-up before their game. From that loss, Smug now wants to focus his energies into developing counter-strategies to help defeat particular opponents. He sees the loss as a positive, as it has now given him the drive to really improve as a player.

As for improving Balrog, the main change he’d make is to the boxer’s haircut. According to Smug, Balrog’s hairline is “like an N64 controller”, so he really just want the man to get a fresh new do. If he had won the tournament, he would have given Balrog a flat top as part of his Champion’s Costume, no question.

Rashid, Ibuki and Laura get sporty on July 25th, with Street Fighter V’s Sports costumes

July 25th is already going to have an avalanche of Street Fighter V DLC, with Abigail, the Champion’s Choice and Ring of Pride DLC, along with the Suzaku Castle stage and nostalgia Costumes all launching on the same day. It seems Capcom are going in for a penny, in for a pound as they have announced yet more costumes that will be launching next Tuesday.

Shown off at the Street Fighter V panel at San Diego Comic Con, Rashid, Laura and Ibuki are all getting sports-themed costumes. Rashid and Laura must be fans of the beautiful game, as they are both getting football — soccer for our American readers — kits. As for Ibuki, she clearly been practicing her spikes as she is wearing a volleyball uniform. I wonder if she practices with the Dead or Alive ladies on her days off from school, street fighting and ninja training?

As with the other costumes, each one will be available $3.99 a pop. If you’re looking to get a tournament set-up with all the costume and stage DLC, you’re going to be spending quite a lot of cash come July 25th.

ESL’s Street Fighter V KOTH event has arrived on Disney XD, now called ESL Brawlers

It seems Disney XD are going all in on fighting games after the success of their Evo broadcast, as they have just announced a partnership with the ESL to bring Street Fighter V to the channel. This comes in the form of ESL Brawlers, a rebranding of the previously-named King of the Hill stream, which sees competitors fighting over and then defending the throne from new opponents.

The first season of ESL Brawlers will run for six episodes; the pilot has already aired and is viewable on Disney XD website. You’ll be able to see players like PIE|Smug, PG|Punk, EG|K-Brad and RISE|Marn battling for the throne, so expect quite the explosive first episode.

Don’t worry if you do not have access to Disney XD, ESL Brawlers will be streamed live on the ESL Twitch channel.

The Tamaranian princess Starfire joins the Injustice 2 roster in August

Acting as the last character of Injustice 2‘s Fighter Pack 1, NetherRealm Studios have just released the trailer for the future queen of Tamaran: Starfire. The former Teen Titans member is a highly mobile fighter, using her power of flight and starbolts to rain fire down on her opponents. Besides throwing normal starbolts, Starfire can launch a special starbolt prism, which can focus her normal blasts into a powerful full-screen beam.

Her character trait looks to be the ability to hover in the air, allowing her to fill the air with bright green projectiles. I imagine if you were waiting for a super-fast zoning character, Starfire looks to be your woman. She spends the majority of the trailer beating up fellow Teen Titan Cyborg, along with Robin and what looks like Bizarro-Superman.

Bizarro looks to be part of a new Gear set for Injustice 2, as the trailer shows him breathing fire instead of his usual ice breath. Let’s hope this confirms that there will be additional Gear sets that transform fighters into even more characters from the DC universe.

Starfire is set to launch sometime in August, and we’ll no doubt learn more about Fighter Pack 2 and 3 after her release.

Genesis 5 moves the legendary Super Smash Bros. tournament from San Jose to Oakland

While the majority of the FGC was enraptured by the action going on at Evo, another esteemed tournament series revealed details on its next installment. Moving from its usual spot in San Jose, Genesis 5 will take place in Oakland, California, running from January 19th-21st 2018.

Taking place at the Oakland Convention Center for Friday and Saturday, Genesis 5 finals will then move to the Paramount Theater to finish off proceedings. Similar to last year, Genesis 5 will be hosting tournaments for:

  • Super Smash Bros. 64
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • Rivals of Aether

The Genesis team are planning to announce more side events in the future, so expect potential tournaments for Street Fighter V, Catherine and maybe even Icons: Combat Arena. The Beefy Smash Doods show off more Metal Blade combos in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

As a follow up to their previous video showing other members of the Smash 4 cast using Mega Man’s Metal Blade in combos, the Beefy Smash Doods have gone back into the lab to see what other characters can do with the Blue Bomber’s pointy projectile. For this installment, BSD have focused on characters in the second row of the character select screen which goes from Link on the far left, to Robin on the far right.

Like with the last video, all of these combos are super situational, so only learn them if you know you’re going up against a Mega Man. I can’t wait until they get onto Kirby, seeing as the pink puffball can actually summon his own Metal Blades, once he has inhaled Mega Man.

Spider-Man, Haggar, Frank West, and Nemesis are all confirmed for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

During the special Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite panel at San Diego Comic Con, a new trailer was shown off that has Spider-Man, Nemesis, Haggar, and Frank West all duking it out. The four returning characters look pretty much identical to their UMvC3 counterparts, with Haggar rocking the pipe, Nemesis shooting missiles, Frank leveling up with his camera and Spidey swinging people around with his webs.

Spider-Man does have a new Level 3 though, which has him blowing up the opponent with a web-ball full of Green Goblin’s explosives. The trailer will officially go live tomorrow, with Gamora and Thanos also featuring alongside the four returning fighters from UMvC3. The stage shown in the trailer also shows M.O.D.O.K undergoing some repairs in the background. I wonder if they’re preparing him for DLC?

This new build will be playable on the show floor at SDCC, so expect to hear impressions from fans at the convention. It’s fair to say that the leaked character list is looking pretty bulletproof now.
