Shonen Jump reveals Dragon Ball FighterZ’s Replay mode, along with more info on Piccolo and Krillin

With V-Jump announcing the two Z-Fighters earlier this week, the latest issue of Shonen Jump has revealed more information on Piccolo and Krillin in Dragon Ball FighterZ. The magazine also states that DBFZ will have a Replay mode, where fighters can rewatch and react to previous battles.

Along with Light Grenade and the Special Beam Cannon, Piccolo will have the use of Hellzone Grenade as one of his special techniques. This powerful attack — first used on Android 17 during the Artificial Humans Saga — has the Namekian surrounding the opponent with Ki blasts, which then hit the enemy all at once.

As for Krillin, not only is his Destructo Disc an unblockable, but he can summon multiple Discs if he holds the attack button down. He can also heal either himself or a partner with a Senzu Bean, making him a perfect support character to put on your team.

The Replay mode allows players to place special “emotion stamps” on battle clips, acting as sort of emotes to punctuate certain moments. We may see this Replay feature in the closed beta, so look out for plenty of people spamming Cell faces whenever you stage a big comeback.

See Abigail shatter some spines in this special WSO Street Fighter V Session

Ahead of his release next week, Capcom UK hosted a special WinnerStaysOn session yesterday night, dedicated to the superhuman hot-rodder Abigail. Along a basic character breakdown which goes over all of Abigail’s normals and specials, this three-hour long session also shows how Abigail fares against the current Street Fighter V cast.

Based on the matches shown, Abigail is going to have a hard time against zoners like Dhalsim and F.A.N.G, as well as rushdown characters. Luckily, he makes up for his lack of quick “get off me” tools with tons of armor and his special-cancelable Nitro Charge run. His 1100 health helps too, meaning Abigail players can take some extra risks with their gargantuan health bar.

Piccolo and Krillin join the Dragon Ball FighterZ roster

In the latest issue of V-Jump, Bandai Namco have revealed that old school Z-Fighters Piccolo and Krillin are the next characters to join the Dragon Ball FighterZ roster. According to the magazine, Krillin’s Supers will be Scattering Bullet and Destructo Disc, while Piccolo will have Light Grenade and Special Beam Cannon.

DBFZ VJump

Krillin’s Destructo Disc will be similar to Freeza’s Death Saucer, being an unblockable projectile which the opponent must dodge. Krillin can also charge up the Super, similar to Gohan’s Father Son Kamehameha. The article also briefly discusses DBFZ’s online system, which has chibi versions of the game’s cast wandering round a lobby, similar to how Guilty Gear Xrd handles matches.

Based on these reveals and the recent announcement that the DBFZ beta will feature nine playable fighters, one can hazard a guess that the roster will be:

  • Goku
  • Gohan
  • Vegeta
  • Future Trunks
  • Piccolo
  • Krillin
  • Freeza
  • Cell
  • Majin Buu

Sign ups for the DBFZ closed beta will open on July 26th, with the beta being available on PS4 and Xbox One.

CapcomFighters catches up with Tokido, following his landmark Evo 2017 victory

Ten years on from his Super Street Fighter II Turbo win at Evo 2007, Echo Fox’s Tokido was crowned Street Fighter V champion at Evo 2017 last night. It was one of the greatest Top 8s in history, with some fantastic play from all competitors who managed to make it to the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

After the confetti had settled and the crowds had piled out of the arena, Capcom community manager Matt Edwards was able to catch up with the new champ to talk about his Evo run and thoughts during his battle against PG|Punk.

Tokido even mentions why he used a taunt combo during the match–spoilers: it’s because it’s looks “godlike”.

Red Bull eSports chats to Guilty Gear creator Daisuke Ishiwatari about the series’ future and possible new fighters

Arc System Works had quite the Evo weekend, wouldn’t you say? Along with stand-out finals for both BlazBlue Central Fiction and Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, the esteemed fighting game developer brought the house down with the announcements of Jubei in Central Fiction, Future Trunks in DBFZ and their new tag team fighter, BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle.

With the studio riding high, Red Bull eSports were able to sit down with Guilty Gear creator Daisuke Ishiwatari to talk about the future of the hard-rocking fighter, potential new characters and the state of the competitive scene. While the series is becoming more popular overseas, it “isn’t quite where [Ishiwatari would] like it to be yet”, so expect Arc System Works doing more to push Guilty Gear in the West.

As for the future of Rev 2, Ishiwatari wants to keep adding legacy characters to the roster, just as long as he has the budget and staff to do so. The next character on the list is Robo-Ky according to Ishiwatari, thanks to his “interesting playstyle”. Robo-Ky did make an appearance in Rev 2’s Story Mode, so we may see the robot clone of Ky Kiske joining the roster in the not-too distant future.

While Rev 2 is still the game of the moment, Ishiwatari is planning to “start something entirely new with the Guilty Gear franchise” soon, so look forward to the next Guilty Gear taking the series in a brand new direction. If you want to read the full Red Bull interview, you can check it out right here.

Windjammers flies onto PS4 and PS Vita on August 29th

Following its brief online beta back in June, DotEmu and PlayStation have announced that the remastered version of Windjammers will be launching August 29th on PS4 and PS Vita. DotEmu have worked tirelessly to make this port as close to the arcade version as possible, and even drafted in members of the French Windjammers community to ensure it plays as it should.

According to DotEmu, the online beta helped improve the port’s menus and matchmaking system, with the developer choosing to go with GGPO for the full release. Members of the SRK team played through the beta and while the core game was the Windjammers you know and love, it was let down by its connection issues and dodgy menus. By the sounds of it, these problems will be fully rectified by the August release.

DotEmu are planning to go full esports with this port of Windjammers, promising updates and improvements following the initial launch. They are also partnering with Fangamer to produce Windjammers merchandise, including licensed Frisbees and hats.

Capcom Unity break down Abigail’s moveset in Street Fighter V

Following his reveal during Street Fighter V Top 8 last night, Capcom have released details on Abigail’s moveset in Street Fighter V. As surmised from his character trailer, the super human hot-rodder is a grappler who uses his immense strength to dominate his opponent. Abigail has access to two command grabs, alongside his special Nitro Charge run. This run get one hit of armor (two hits when it’s an EX) and it can be cancelled into four separate followups–his V-Skill, a command grab, a powerful punch or a huge overhead.

His V-Skill is Hungabee, where Abigail thrusts his belly forward to parry an incoming attack. It can be done high or low, with a successful parry leading into a potential combo. His V-Trigger is Max Power, which allows him to charge up his four unique heavy punches. Each charged heavy punch gets a hit of armor and opens up for extended aerial juggles. A fully charged Max Power punch will break your opponent’s guard, so beware of a charging Abigail.

You can see Abigail’s Story and Premium costumes below, and you will be able to let loose with the (Mad) gear-head on July 25th.

Final Fight’s Abigail joins the Street Fighter V roster on July 25th

After plenty of rumors and speculation, Capcom has confirmed that Final Fight’s Abigail will be the next character joining the Street Fighter V roster. Looking completely different to his original incarnation, the Mad Gear gang member is a giant among the SFV cast, standing as tall as two Kens stacked on top of each other!

As you can imagine, Abigail is a heavy hitting grappler who overwhelms opponents with his immense strength and huge bulk. Alongside overwhelming command throws, Abigail has an armored charge move, a multi-hitting flip which takes up almost half the screen and a Critical Art where he uses his opponent as a speed bag. Much like Hugo in Street Fighter 4, be very afraid when you see this man mountain running towards you. With Abigail being as tall as he is, I’m not sure how you’ll be able to cross him up, as his head practically touches the top of the screen.

Abigail comes back with the Metro City Bay Area stage, which has fighters battling on a rundown waterfront near the bruiser’s scrapyard. If you can’t wait to throw down as this gargantuan grappler, Abigail and the Metro City Bay Area stage will launch on July 25th, alongside the Champion’s Choice outfit for Guile, the Ring of Pride and Suzaku Castle stages, as well as the nostalgia costumes for Alex, Juri and Ibuki.

Wavedash Games finally show off gameplay for Icons: Combat Arena

Following the teaser trailer after Melee finals yesterday, Wavedash Games have (at last!) shown off gameplay for their eagerly anticipated platform fighter, Icons: Combat Arena.

Along with gameplay, this trailer also reveals Icons’ sword fighter–the warrior empress Zhurong. She is very similar to Marth, with her aerials and forward smash looking almost identical to that of the Fire Emblem lord. The presentation is a bit underwhelming at present, with hit-sounds lacking any real oomph and character animations being a bit too similar to well-known Smash characters like Fox, Captain Falcon and Marth. Do keep in mind that it is pre-alpha, so there is still plenty of time to polish up visuals and give each character their own unique feel.

It’s certainly got the fluid movement from platform fighters like Melee though, with wavedashes, platform pressure and edgeguarding all intact. With its open beta launching on Steam this fall, platform fighter fans will see if Icons can tempt them away from the likes of Melee and Smash 4, with its lighting fast combat, online matchmaking and free to play structure. You can sign up for the open beta over on the official Icons website.
