Eagle takes flight in these Killer Instinct matches

Ahead of his launch next week, Iron Galaxy have released two videos to show off Killer Instinct‘s cybernetic archer Eagle. This matches show off Eagle’s specials as well as his main mechanic, his quiver of arrows. Unlike Arbiter who cannot reload his Carbine, Eagle can pick up his arrows by simply walking over them. As a result, expect Eagle players to be rolling and jumping around the screen, constantly picking up his projectiles.

He has a stock of twelve arrows, with his standard arrow shot working a lot like Green Arrow in Injustice 2. Eagle can move around when he has notched an arrow, with it charging up with spirit power the longer it is held. His throws have him using up an arrow, while his purple arrow ender does not have him expending any ammo. It looks like he cannot run out of arrows, with his quiver always refilling to one should Eagle ever use them all. We’ll no doubt get a better explanation of all of Eagle’s specials and normals in the upcoming patch 3.8 video, coming this Friday.

His robot eagle companion works like one of ARIA’s assists, with Eagle able to call it in to swoop at the enemy and stop incoming projectiles, let out a sonic screech or dive-bomb the floor to knock your opponent back. One special shows the robot flying off-stage and returning back to Eagle’s side, presumably picking up any arrows that are on the other side of the stage.

Ketchup and Mustard go under the Red Hood with their latest Injustice 2 character breakdown

As Injustice 2’s first DLC character, Ketchup and Mustard have hit the lab to break down everything Red Hood has in his arsenal. As a hyper-mobile mixup character, Red Hood excels at moving between his strong grounded strings and flashy special moves to defeat his opponent.

Red Hood’s ground mine is one of his best tools as it not only controls space, but can be meter-burned to start a combo. The meter-burned version of Gotham Stars can also be used to combo off an opponent’s unsafe jump-in, thanks to its incredibly fast recovery time. As for getting out of trouble or closing the gap, Fatal Drop and Lethal Lunge have Red Hood either rolling forward or away from the opponent. Fatal Drop is Red Hood’s only wakeup attack, so be careful about backrolling out of danger.

Red Hood’s trait is Electric Hammers, where he activates the tasers on the bottom of his gun to shock the opponent. The main bonus of this trait is that it can be special-canceled into, meaning you can covert into pressure on many special-cancelable normals. When you consider there are four different ways to end the Electric Hammer-specific string, you can get some devious mixups by canceling into this trait.

Nintendo announces free DLC plans for ARMS

With ARMS now available around the world, players will naturally be looking forward to what new updates and DLC will be coming to this stretchy-limbed fighter in the future. Announced during their final Treehouse Live presentation at E3, producer Kosuke Yabuki revealed the first batch of free updates coming to ARMS.

The first update will come at the end of this month, adding a special spectator mode for players wanting to analyze ARMS matches. This feature was seen briefly during the ARMS E3 Invitational, and will allow viewers to watch matches from multiple angles.

The other update will come in July, adding boss character Max Brass to the ARMS roster. As the current ARMS champion, Max Brass appears as the final opponent in ARMS‘ Grand Prix mode. Much like Spring Man, Max Brass also gains permanently charged punches when his health reaches 25%, and can deflect incoming attacks by dashing when his punches are charged. He can also bulk himself up, allowing him to armor through non-charged punches like Master Mummy and Mechanica.

Smasher Daniel “ChuDat” Rodriguez joins Team Liquid

Joining fellow Super Smash Bros. Melee legends like Chillindude, Ken, and Hungrybox, Daniel “ChuDat” Rodriguez has become the newest member of Team Liquid. Starting his career back in 2005 and still managing to make top 8s, ChuDat is at the top of the Ice Climbers mountain and in contention for the coveted sixth place spot, underneath the Gods of Melee.

ChuDat has seen a real return to form in the past few months, gaining first at Battle of BC 2 over Echo Fox|MVG|Mew2King earlier this month, alongside second place at DreamHack Austin, fifth at Smash Rivalries and ninth at Genesis 4. By joining Team Liquid, he looks to climb even higher along with his long-time partner and friend, Chillindude.

With both players being famous for their Smash diss tracks, the two have teamed up for a special track to celebrate ChuDat joining Team Liquid. It’s not quite Respect Your Elders, but the beat’s pretty good.

Sub-Zero slides into Injustice 2 next month

Earlier than expected, NetherRealm Studios have released the next character trailer for Fighter Pack 1. Coming into through a portal from Earthrealm, the cryomancer Sub-Zero is joining the Injustice 2 cast in July. Acting as a combination of all of his Mortal Kombat X variations into a single character, this version of Sub-Zero is quite the chilling opponent.

Many of his strings and specials are the same as his Mortal Kombat X incarnation: it’s the meter-burn specials where things get really interesting. His meter-burn Slide has him projecting a frozen version of himself sliding along the ground, while his meter-burn Ice Clone has him backflipping to create a grounded and an airborne Ice Clone. His special is particularly brutal, turning opponents into a frozen pin-cushion while teleporting around the screen. He also has an ice dive-kick, where Sub-Zero stays in the air while an Ice Clone goes flying at your opponent.

While his moves stay strictly PG-13, his win animation is the throwback to his iconic Spine Rip Fatality, as you see it happening from the victim’s perspective. Hearing the bloody explosion and seeing Sub-Zero staring at you as he lifts your torso into the air is quite the finisher.

Based on this release schedule, expect Starfire to release this August, with a trailer coming sometime in July.

Eagle comes to Killer Instinct on June 27th, alongside patch 3.8

After being teased at Combo Breaker, we’ve finally got more footage and a release date for the cybernetic hunter and brother of Chief Thunder, Eagle. He will join the Killer Instinct roster on June 27th, coming along with patch 3.8. According to Iron Galaxy designer Adam “Keits” Heart, Eagle is a “mobile zoner” with “scary mixups from various ranges.” If you’re a fan of Green Arrow, Hawkeye or Nakoruru, Eagle should be right up your alley.

Based on the trailer, it confirms that Eagle’s bird will be an assist character, returning arrows to him if they miss their target. His quiver has a finite number of arrows, so you’ll need to call on your feathered friend to restock your ammo supply. Eagle can fire a single arrow or a flurry of three arrows, either as normal arrows or as flaming projectiles. Similar to Arbiter with his carbine shots, Eagle can fire off an arrow at the end of a combo to deal some extra damage.

As for his other attacks, Eagle has a special flip move where he can cross up opponents similar to Shadow Jago’s divekicks. He also seems to have a slide and a move very similar to Fulgore’s Axis Slash, which makes sense seeing as Eagle became the model for the current Fulgore units. We’ll no doubt get a full character breakdown in the future, but he looks perfect for anyone who loves hyper mobile projectile characters.

Patch 3.8 is also promised to have a bunch of balance changes as well, so look forward to those as well on June 27th. Expect Eagle to cost $4.99, similar to recent DLC characters.

The Beefy Smash Doods delve into Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s “semi-techable wallbump”

Smash 4 is coming up on its third birthday this year, yet discoveries are still being made for the fighter. From new character tech to figuring out certain engine quirks, lab monsters and researchers are still hard to work trying to understand everything in the game. Most recently, players have uncovered the reason as to why players can’t tech the underside of certain stages.

Christened the “semi-techable wallbump” by the Beefy Smash Doods, a handful of competitive stages have areas where players must vary up their tech timing in order to stop themselves bouncing into the abyss. The factors for this wallbump include players hitting an area that cannot be walljumped off of, players colliding with a very small wall or a corner of a stage. The Beefy Smash Doods give examples of all of these areas on current competitive stages, so you know where to look out for when recovering back to stage.

As for why it’s called a “semi-techable” wallbump, players have to hit the shield button eight frames before they hit the wall if they want to tech the hit. If you try to tech as you hit the wall, your character will do nothing. You can tell if you’ve hit one of these semi-techable areas as your character only lets off a puff of smoke as they fly off the wall, rather than the usual sparks and smoke.

Ori from Ori and the Blind Forest joins the Rivals of Aether roster this summer

In a collaboration with Moon Studios, the titular hero from Ori and the Blind Forest is joining the Rivals of Aether roster later this summer. Together with her spirit companion Sein, the duo utilizes all the abilities they learned in their first adventure to fight against their opponents.

Ori and Sein are akin to other puppet characters like Rosalina and Luma, with Ori acting as the frontline fighter while Sein provides support. Sein is able to juggle opponents with Spirit Flame and Charged Flame, allowing Ori to come in and continue a combo. Ori can even use her Bash ability to fling enemy projectiles back at the user. When combined with her Light Burst, she can even redirect her own projectiles or even catapult opponents across the screen, if she times the Bash right.

Ori and Sein also come with the new Spirit Tree stage, which can be played in both Competitive and Aether forms. In the Aether form, the evil owl spirit Kuro swoops in to attack opponents who fall off the stage, while the friendly Gumo will occasionally move the log platform in the center of the stage.

Ori and Sein will be available on both Steam and Xbox One later this summer, going for $4.99. Their release will coincide with the full launch of Rivals of Aether on Xbox One, meaning console players can finally start gaining on their PC counterparts. More original characters are coming to Rivals of Aether this fall, so stay tuned for more DLC combatants later this year.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Story Mode demo will be available tonight

You’ll be able to play Marvel soon than expected, as Sony has announced that there will be a Story Mode demo of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite available later today (on both PlayStation 4, and Xbox One). This news comes from Sony’s E3 press conference, where a new trailer revealed tons of new characters. By the looks of it, the previous character leak from NeoGAF was pretty spot on, as this trailer introduced:

  • Dante (in his classic DMC3 design)
  • Arthur
  • Doctor Strange
  • Spencer
  • Nova
  • Thanos
  • Gamora
  • Black Panther (most likely a DLC/Deluxe Edition-only character)
  • Zero

As for MvC:I’s story, it has Capcom and Marvel heroes splitting up to find the Infinity Stones, while Ultron-Sigma pursues them across time and space. The Mad Titan and usual holder of the Infinity Gauntlet Thanos seems to have entered into a hasty truce with the heroes, as he not only tells them where each stone is, but fights back against Ultron-Sigma.

It also seems more likely that we’ll be getting a Monster Hunter character, as the Time Stone is located in what looks like the Great Desert from Monster Hunter 4, based on the markings and statues in the background. The Dah’ren Mohran right at the trailer’s end is also a dead giveaway.

The PlayStation servers are no doubt overloaded with people trying to access the Story Mode demo, so you might give it some time to cool off before checking yourself. As of this writing, it has not yet appeared in the PlayStation Store.

UPDATE: Matthew Edwards clarifies:

Over in North America, expect the demo to appear on PSN at 8:00 PM PDT, and 10:00 PM for the Xbox One version.
