Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Story Mode demo will be available tonight

You’ll be able to play Marvel soon than expected, as Sony has announced that there will be a Story Mode demo of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite available later today (on both PlayStation 4, and Xbox One). This news comes from Sony’s E3 press conference, where a new trailer revealed tons of new characters. By the looks of it, the previous character leak from NeoGAF was pretty spot on, as this trailer introduced:

  • Dante (in his classic DMC3 design)
  • Arthur
  • Doctor Strange
  • Spencer
  • Nova
  • Thanos
  • Gamora
  • Black Panther (most likely a DLC/Deluxe Edition-only character)
  • Zero

As for MvC:I’s story, it has Capcom and Marvel heroes splitting up to find the Infinity Stones, while Ultron-Sigma pursues them across time and space. The Mad Titan and usual holder of the Infinity Gauntlet Thanos seems to have entered into a hasty truce with the heroes, as he not only tells them where each stone is, but fights back against Ultron-Sigma.

It also seems more likely that we’ll be getting a Monster Hunter character, as the Time Stone is located in what looks like the Great Desert from Monster Hunter 4, based on the markings and statues in the background. The Dah’ren Mohran right at the trailer’s end is also a dead giveaway.

The PlayStation servers are no doubt overloaded with people trying to access the Story Mode demo, so you might give it some time to cool off before checking yourself. As of this writing, it has not yet appeared in the PlayStation Store.

UPDATE: Matthew Edwards clarifies:

Over in North America, expect the demo to appear on PSN at 8:00 PM PDT, and 10:00 PM for the Xbox One version.

The Injustice 2 World Championship is coming to ELEAGUE this October

ELEAGUE is showing no signs of stopping its fighting game coverage, as it has just announced that it will be hosting the Injustice 2 World Championship this October. Following on from the success of the Street Fighter V Invitational, this acts as another big event on the bustling competitive circuit for NetherRealm’s super-powered fighter.

The Injustice 2 World Championship will act as the grand finale of the whole Injustice 2 Championship Series. As a result, we’ll no doubt see finalists from the Pro Series, Hometown Heroes, Path to Pro and Liga Latina being invited to compete in this tournament, so players from all regions have a chance to prove themselves as the world’s best Injustice 2 player.

It’s unknown at this time if the Injustice 2 World Championship will follow a similar format to the Street Fighter V Invitational, but we’ll probably learn more after the E3 craziness has calmed down.

2GGC: ARMS Saga is confirmed as July’s Saga event

With 2GGC: Nairo Saga currently underway, 2GGaming has confirmed the Saga for next month. Following a call fro feedback on their Twitter page, the next Saga event will be dedicated to Nintendo’s upcoming springy-limbed fighter, ARMS. Along with the usual Super Smash Bros. for Wii U singles and doubles events, there will also be a dedicated tournament for ARMS.

As this Saga is boxing-related, 2GGaming is planning to have a player compendium to bring Little Mac mains from around the world to Esports Arena. According to the initial tweet, there may also be a special Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots tournament to see who is the true king of the ring.

With Nintendo recently launching their NintendoVS initiative, we could finally see the company having an official presence at a 2GG event with ARMS Saga. The conspiracy theorist in me says that ARMS Saga is the start of an elaborate collaboration between the Big N and 2GG, with the rumored Pokémon Saga being delayed until September to coincide with the launch of Pokkén Tournament DX. We’ll see if my suspicions are correct next week, during Nintendo’s Treehouse presentations at E3.

Infil and blackadde discuss fighting game bugs in the first edition of Fightin’ Words

Most famous for creating the excellent Killer Instinct Complete Guide, Infil is branching out into more general fighting game writing, via his website. Together with the writer of the SFIV Rindoukan Bible–blackadde–the two are starting a discussion series called Fightin’ Words, where they talk about elements of fighting games at great length.

For the first installment of this series, the two delve into the history of fighting game bugs to see how glitches have influenced how people play certain games. Not only do the two talk about game-breaking bugs, but they discuss certain instances where glitches have fundamentally changed the way fighting games have been played. From roll cancelling in CvS2, to TAC Infinites in UMvC3 to even the very idea of combos in Street Fighter II, bugs have sometimes defined the competitive future of a fighting game.

The piece goes through many specific examples from various games, with the two analyzing their impact and showing the bugs in action. If you’re into the nuts and bolts of fighting games, the whole blog is worth the read, as both Infil and blackadde really know their stuff.

“Dragon Ball Fighters” is coming in early 2018, developed by Arc System Works

Moving from Guilty Gear to Dragon Ball, Bandai Namco have announced a collaboration with Arc System Works for a new anime fighting game. Named Dragon Ball Fighters, the game has players selecting teams of three characters from the Dragon Ball universe to duke it out in “ultra high speed battles,” according to Bandai Namco’s Japanese press release.

Dragon Ball Fighters

Similar to Guilty Gear Xrd, Dragon Ball Fighters will be a 2.5D fighter, in order to include dramatic camera angles and character expressions that you wouldn’t normally see in a traditional 2D fighter. Based on the screenshots from the leaked press release, Goku, Vegeta, Maijin Buu, Freeza and Cell will be playable, along with a sixth yet unidentified character. Based on the hero/villain character line-up, I could hazard a guess that it will either be Gohan or Future Trunks.

Dragon Ball Fighters Freeza vs Goku

This announcement was supposed to come out during E3 on June 12th, so expect a potential trailer during Sony’s press conference on Monday. A Marvel-esque Dragon Ball game made by Arc System Works sounds like a dream come true for many fans, so let’s hope any footage we do see lives up to the hype. Dragon Ball Fighters is planned to release worldwide in early 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Yahoo! Esports recounts Nairo’s Super Smash Bros. legacy, ahead of 2GGC: Nairo Saga

With 2GGC: Nairo Saga happening this weekend, Yahoo! Esports have created a short documentary to commemorate NRG|Nairo’s legacy. Cutting his teeth in Super Smash Bros. Brawl alongside players like C9|Ally, TSM|ZeRo and IMT|ANTi, Nairo has been famous for his relentless offense and ability to kill an opponent seemingly off of one hit.

The release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U saw Nairo handing in the sword and cape of Meta Knight for Zero Suit Samus’ plasma pistol. Now, Nairo is widely regarded as the world’s best ZSS player, with his aggressive playstyle working perfectly with ZSS’s amazing burst damage potential. He’s no one-trick pony though, as Nairo is famous for pulling out other characters to win the day. His Bowser is infamous for stealing sets off players who should really know the match-up.

The documentary not only talks to Nairo, but to other members of the Smash community who have a history with him. He has quite the mountain to climb if he wants to finally break the 2GG Saga Curse this weekend, so tune in to see if Nairo can finally do it.

Try out Wishmere’s free demo ahead of its full release on Steam

We’re in quite the golden age for fighting games, with tons of new titles coming out to suit players of all stripes. But while the market may be dominated by big releases like Tekken 7, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and Injustice 2, there are some equally engaging fighters coming out of the indie scene.

One of these titles is Wishmere, a 2D brawler/fighter hybrid which takes the accessibility of a game like Super Smash Bros., and combines it with the movement and time-bending mechanics of Guilty Gear. Players can move around the screen via airdashes, there is a YRC-esque ability which allows an attacking player to briefly slow time, and there is a Burst mechanic to give you some breathing room if you’re being overwhelmed.

Each character has access to a special ability called an Edge, which drastically changes their playstyle. One character’s Edge may increase the damage and stun of their attacks for a short time, while another may be able to cancel any move into a dash. Using your Edge abilities build up the Fate meter, which can either be used to perform your super, your Burst or your YRC.

If you want to give Wishmere a go, a demo is available on their Steam page, with it planning to leave Steam Early Access later this year. Besides its Versus mode, it has a fully fleshed-out single-player campaign, along with co-op challenge maps and much more. You can check out the video below to see what a typical Wishmere match looks like.

Tekken 7 tops the UK sales charts for the first time since Tekken 3

Beating out Injustice 2 as the best selling fighting game in the UK, Tekken 7 has climbed the ladder to top the UK sales charts on its week of release. Beating other titles like Overwatch, Fifa 17 and Prey, a Tekken game has not reached the top of the UK sales charts since 1998, when Tekken 3 reached the top for the original PlayStation.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 got close back in 2012, earning second in the charts behind Sleeping Dogs, while Tekken 6 only managed to reach number eight when it launched in 2009. It will now be quite the battle to see if Tekken 7 can hold that top spot for more than one week, and if Injustice 2 will be able to keep its position within the UK top ten.

Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers also managed to get within the top ten during its first week of sale, but it has since plummeted to 34th place on the charts–just above such heavy hitters as Minecraft: PlayStation Edition and Farming Simulator ’17.
