Joker confirmed as a playable character via Injustice 2 achievement list

As one of the worst-kept secrets circling NetherRealm’s latest fighter, we’ve finally got confirmation that the Joker will indeed be a playable character in Injustice 2, thanks to the release of the game’s achievement list. There are two achievements to do with the Joker, named “I Love You, I Hate You” and “Why Aren’t You Laughing?”

“I Love You, I Hate You” tasks players with defeating the Joker with Harley Quinn’s “Go Night Night” move, while “Why Aren’t You Laughing?” has players defeating Batman with the Joker’s “Not So Funny Is It?” attack. Most of the achievements involve characters with storied rivalries finishing each other off in specific ways, either with standard or meter-burned specials. A couple of my favorites are Captain Cold’s “FROSTY!!!” achievement, unlocked for defeating The Flash with a Cryogenic Blast and Bane’s “OUTTA NOWHERE!!!” achievement, which has him defeating Superman with a meter-burned Bane Bomb.

You can find the whole achievement list here and don’t worry, there are no major Story Mode spoilers from this list. The only thing it does reveal that you will be able to take alternate paths at certain points, shown by the “I’ll Do It Again” achievement.

Finally, some official Marvel vs. Capcom news! Announced in a post by Peter “Combofiend” Rosas over on Capcom-Unity, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on September 19th. Along with this information, Capcom have released a story trailer for MvC:I, along with a list of eight characters that will be joining the roster. Before you go checking, they are indeed the same characters that were leaked yesterday by French website Jeuxvideo. They are (again):

  • Ultron
  • Hulk
  • Thor
  • Hawkeye
  • Rocket Raccoon
  • Chun-Li
  • Strider Hiryu
  • Chris Redfield

This story trailer also confirms the existence of Ultron-Sigma, who was teased at the end of the first MvC:I trailer, and is now confirmed to be the game’s main villain.

That’s not all in terms of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite news, as we also have information on its limited and deluxe edition, along with its 2017 Character Pass. If you pre-order the Standard Edition of MvC:I, you will gain access to the Warrior Thor and Evil Ryu Premium costumes. One can guess that the Warrior Thor costume will probably relate to his new look in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok movie.

The Deluxe Edition will cost $89.99, will come with the Warrior Thor and Evil Ryu costumes, as well as the Gladiator Hulk and Mission Command X costumes. You will also gain access to the 2017 Character Pass if you buy this edition, which will give you access to six post-launch characters. The first of these will be the Megaman villain Sigma.

MvCI Character Pass

For the Marvel true believers, there is the $199.99 Collector’s Edition which comes with all the previously mentioned digital goodies, as well as four interlinking character dioramas of Megaman X, Chun-Li, Iron Man and Captain Marvel, along with special LED-powered Infinity Stones.

MvCI Collector's Edition

Pre-orders are now available, and expect more MvC:I news in the coming months, as we finally have a release date!

Capcom announces this year’s Capcom Pro Tour DLC for Street Fighter V

As the Pro Tour is now in full swing, Capcom have released details on the special DLC which Street Fighter V fans can buy to fill the prize pool for this year’s Capcom Cup and support the running of the Capcom Pro Tour. Like last year, there will be two special Capcom Cup Collection Costumes, a new Capcom Pro Tour stage and the Champion’s Choice Costume, designed by last year’s winner Liquid|NuckleDu.

So far, Capcom have only announced the two Capcom Cup Collection Costumes, with Ken getting his tuxedo from his Story Mode chapter and Ryu sporting a traditional Japanese festival outfit. The CPT Stage and Champion’s Choice Costume will be announced at a later date, but you can check Ryu and Ken’s new threads below.

Capcom have also announced the Capcom Pro Tour 2017 Premier Pass, which bundles together all of the costume and stage DLC, along two exclusive titles, a special Capcom Cup color for all 28 characters and monthly in-game targets which reward players with extra Fight Money. These monthly targets will go live in June and the CPT color will only be available for PS4 players, decking characters out in a mix of Capcom and PlayStation’s trademark blue.

The Premier Pass will be available for $24.99, but you can buy the CPT costumes and stage separately if you wish. The costumes cost $5.99 a piece, with the CPT stage going for $9.99. Like last year, all of this CPT content will come off of the marketplace in late November, so Capcom can tally up the numbers ahead of Capcom Cup. Do note that Capcom does not plan to rerelease costumes and stages from previous Pro Tours at this time, so get them while they’re hot.

Initiating Ultimate.exe: ARIA rounds out Killer Instinct’s second Ultimates Ultra Pack

Ahead of its release next Tuesday, Iron Galaxy has released footage of the final Ultimate coming in the second Ultimates Ultra Pack. It’s finally the turn of the robotic director of Ultratech ARIA to unleash her wrath, and her finisher doesn’t disappoint. Splitting up into her three drone bodies, ARIA plays pinball with her opponent before running them through with a dramatic flying stab. It’s one of the more cinematic Ultimates that have been released so far, currently tying with Tusk for my personal favorite.

Ultimates Ultra Pack 2 will be available for free on May 2nd, with one set of Ultimates left to go. The final pack will include finishers for Mira, Glacius, Hisako, Sabrewulf, and Aganos, with Iron Galaxy currently keeping quiet on whether any more characters will gain Ultimates in the future. If you don’t want to download all the packs piecemeal, there are plans for a Ultimate Monster Pack which will contain all 15.

Ultron may be coming to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, according to a leaked character list

Following an initial rumor that there could be a big information dump later this week for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, French website Jeuxvideo may have accidentally released the names of eight characters ahead of the news embargo. Before it was taken down, crafty Marvel fans were able to archive the post. The eight characters that we may see in this rumored preview are:

  • Ultron
  • Hulk
  • Thor
  • Hawkeye
  • Rocket Raccoon
  • Chun-Li
  • Strider Hiryu
  • Chris Redfield

The list is fairly conservative, with Ultron being the only brand-new character revealed in this preview. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 releasing this weekend in the UK, it makes sense for Marvel and Capcom to ride the hype train. Compared to others, this leak seems pretty believable. With Capcom UK community manager Matthew Edwards recently tweeting about playing “unreleased games” (note the fight sticks in the picture), it is all looking plausible for something MvC:I-related to be happening soon.

Keep your eyes locked on Shoryuken for any more developments!

Brainiac lays waste to the competition in his Injustice 2 intro trailer

Teased in the final Shattered Alliances trailer, NetherRealm Studios have finally shown off how main villain Brainiac plays in Injustice 2. A master of the mid-range, Brainiac uses his mechanical tentacles and stolen Kryptonian technology to wear down his opponents and steal victory. Based on his sheer number of tentacle based attacks, you’d think Brainiac had been going to Doctor Octopus for his combat training.

In what could be his character trait, Brainiac summons a miniature version of his flagship to sail across the screen. It can be commanded to fly across the middle or top of the screen, with it dropping an energy bomb as it closes in on its opponent. In the trailer, we see Brainiac use this bomb to cover his approach, with him using his tentacles to swing from the top of the screen and close the distance between him and Superman. Combined with his divekick and tentacle-boosted shoulder barge, Brainiac’s mobility is pretty solid.

They aren’t just used for attack though. Brainiac can surround himself with his tentacles, electrifying them and stunning any attacking opponent. He can also make these electrified tentacles sprout from his back, for continuing a combo or blocking a jump-in. If you need some heavy ordnance though, Brainiac can also summon an orbital laser to juggle opponents, allowing him to start a combo. Brainiac is definitely a fan of the laser strike from orbit, as his super has him ordering his bio-drones to hold an enemy in place, while he blasts them with a giant blue laser from his flagship.

MySmashCorner breaks down what makes a mind-game

At its core, winning in a fighting game is all about mind-games. Strip out execution and the main struggle in any fighting game is successfully outwitting your opponent to achieve victory. Whether that is through successfully reading your opponent or baiting out a bad option, mastering mind-games is key to become a great fighting game player. But how do you improve your mind-games? Hoping to improve the mental fortitude of struggling players, MySmashCorner has released a new video discussing what makes a mind-game.

After briefly discussing the idea of thinking of strategies on multiple levels (traditional fighting game players will know this concept by the word “yomi”), MySmashCorner gives specific examples of using mind-games in a typical match. Most of these mind-games are thought up in the heat of battle, so it’s helpful to see them broken down piece by piece, in order to understand the reasoning behind each one. Of course, some mind-games require one player’s deliberately switching their brain off to make them hard to read, but you shouldn’t rely on this as a common tactic.

Most of the mind-games presented in this video–techchasing, tomahawks, edgeguards–are specific to Smash, but things like shield/block pressure, conditioning and reads are universal to all fighting games. Even if you aren’t a dedicated Smash player, you may learn something about improving your general mental game by watching this analysis.

Brainiac’s invasion of Earth begins in the final Shattered Alliances trailer for Injustice 2

NetherRealm Studios have released the final Shattered Alliances trailer for Injustice 2, finally revealing the big bad Brainiac. After destroying Krypton and most of the Kryptonian race, Brainiac descends on Earth to eliminate Superman, Supergirl, and then the entire planet. With an extraterrestrial entity threatening to destroy the world, this finally gets all the superheroes–and maybe even some supervillains–to join together to kick Brainiac back into space.

There are only brief glimpses of Brainiac’s fighting style in this trailer, with him using a combination of his robotic tentacles and bio-mechanical drones in battle. We’ll no doubt get a dedicated character intro trailer in the next few days, showing off Brainiac in all of his glory. With the release date of Injustice 2 fast approaching, his introductory trailer will probably be the last, besides one for DLC character Darkseid–and possibly the Joker, if the rumors are true.

Melee with their new series titled “The Reads.” Starring Bobby “Scar” Scarnewman, Kris “Toph” Aldenderfer, and one special guest from the world of Melee, these three will venture out into the wilds of Melee netplay to get some wins, sprinkle some salt and generally entertain the audience.
