Learn to Master the Hadoken with the Help of Professor Daigo Umehara and the Research Institute of Ryu

In a recent episode of BeasTV, Daigo Umehara was joined by Third Strike god Kuroda in the inaugural meeting of the Research Institute of Ryu, dedicated to teaching fighting game players how to master the wandering warrior and climb to the top of the Street Fighter V mountain. Now, unless you are fluent in Japanese, much of Professors Umehara and Kuroda words will have flown over your head–but thanks to the translation work of Toshio Gurupon, English speakers can learn from these two prominent Street Fighter technicians.

While this stream was mainly played for laughs, with both Daigo and Kuroda donning lab coats to explain the theory behind throwing the perfect fireball, there is some useful applicable information here; like how throwing certain Hadokens can shrink Ryu’s hurtbox to avoid attacks. Grab your note pad and make sure to put your hand up first if you want to pose a question to Professor Umehara.

Pink Lem0nad3 Shows Off the World Outside of Zero May Cry in This Mammoth Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Combo Video

While certain team compositions like Morrigan/Vergil/Doom and Zero May Cry have become regular features at every Marvel 3 tournament, the spirit of Marvel is still alive and well among lab monsters and tech scientists, who are continuing to push the boat out with new teams and combos. Pink Lem0nad3 is one of these researchers, creating a sizable 17-minute combo video, featuring an eclectic mix of different characters and team compositions.

While familiar suspects like Doctor Doom, Dante and Vergil feature within the many combos on display here, less often-seen characters like Jill, Ghost Rider, and Chris Redfield also get a look in between the hail of Hidden Missiles and Judgement Cuts. Check out all 17 minutes of Marvel goodness below and if it’s popular, Pink Lem0nad3 may put the lab coat back on and make another compilation.

Pretty Smooth Fighting, Fox: Skarfelt Shows Off Some Flashy Fox Combos in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

While his “Optimising Fox” videos are about practicality and fundamental play in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Skarfelt has started a new series which is dedicated to the cooler tricks that this vulpine fighter pilot can pull off. This combo compilation shows off the sillier side of Fox, featuring combos with neutral-air locks, forward-air to footstool kills offstage, and repeated up-air strings which results in super early KOs off the top.

Some of these combos are frame perfect, requiring sequential footstools, single hit down-airs and neutral-air locks to kill. The majority of them are technically precise and darn right impractical to pull off in a match but if you manage to, you’d be heralded as a god. Check out all of the Fox madness below and expect more remarkable combos from Skarfelt in the future.

Counter Wake-Up Critical Arts with Kara Cancel Normals in Street Fighter V

Getting hit by a wakeup Critical Art can be one of the most demoralizing things in fighting games; you have a setup planned off of a knockdown then BAM, hit in the face with a random Shinku Hadoken. However, if you are prone to getting hit by this most nutty of options, there is now a way to blow up wake-up Critical Arts with the use of a kara cancel.

Noticed by r/StreetFighter user ZacharyM123: upon sweeping their opponent, players can kara cancel any normal to mash out their own Critical Art during the animation of their opponent’s Critical Art. In the video example, after knocking down with Chun-Li’s sweep, Zachary whiffs standing medium punch to get his timing right, before whiffing a standing light kick to kara cancel into his own Critical Art upon seeing the enemy animation.

Any character is capable of doing this with any normal, but they have to be at zero to account for the knockdown advantage they have on the opponent quick-rising to do the wake-up Critical Art; that’s why he uses the standing medium punch to time the light kick kara cancel. While Zachary says he is at +1 for this setup, he is actually at zero and your character must be at a neutral state in order to mash the Critical Art during the opponent’s animation.

Zachary states there are possible oki setups with this, so get experimenting to see how you can get this kara cancel tech to work for you.

Wind the Clock Back to 2008 with the First in VGBootCamp’s “Blast From The Past” Melee Highlights Series

While there are hundreds of highlight compilations following any modern day tournament, it’s rare that montage makers delve back into the past and create montages of landmark events that newer players may have missed. Well, VGBootCamp are seeking to redress the balance with their new “Blast From The Past” series, where they goes through the annals of Melee’s storied history and highlight certain moments from historic tournaments before the age of Twitch.

For their inaugural episode, VGBC has chosen Pound 3 from 2008, a tournament which saw a young Mango making an absolute tear through the Losers’ bracket and proving that his third place at Evo 2007 was not just a fluke. This was back in the days where Mango mained Jigglypuff, players like Azen and PC Chris were still dominant in the Melee scene, and matches were fought on stages like Corneria and Brinstar, if you can believe such a thing. While lacking the high production values of modern day events and filmed via dodgy capture cards or handcams pointed at CRTs, this first look back into the early days of competitive Melee shows just how far the meta, the game, and its players have come.

King of Fighters ’94, Samurai Shodown and Other Neo-Geo Classics Are Coming to Western PSN Tomorrow

While it seemed that Japan was the only country receiving Hamster’s Arcade Archives versions of old SNK classics tomorrow, PlayStation has announced that these Arcade Archives ports–including Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, and King of Fighters ’94–are also coming to the USA and European PSN Stores tomorrow. This Neo-Geo ACA series will also include the original Metal Slug, Alpha Mission II and World Heroes, so plenty of arcade classics to sink your teeth into.

Hamster is continuing to work with SNK Playmore to bring more of their back catalogue to PS4 in the new year, so expect other editions of Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, and King of Fighters to arrive on the PSN Store in 2017. The possibility of a re-release of Capcom vs. SNK 2 looks potentially more likely now, based on Sony’s partnership with both SNK and Capcom. We live in hope.

F K Digital Releases Character Trailers for Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe

With the PlayStation4 update of Chaos Code coming to Japan next month, F K Digital have uploaded their first wave of character trailers, showing off the roster of their anime fighter. F K Digital had released an initial trailer showing off Otagi Hikaru a week or so ago, but they have now released six more character trailers. The roster ranges from hard-hitting cybernetic ninja Kagari, to bearded chef Bravo who uses giant woks and rotisserie chickens as weapons, to the bespectacled Hermes, who seems to use spirits similar to Stands from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure to fight. Still no trailers showing off Lupinus and Ray, the two brand new characters for Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe, but I expect F K Digital are putting some footage together of those fighters as you are reading this.

Check out the trailers below and await more information on a Western release of Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe in the near future. With a new Chaos Code coming in 2017, as announced as this year’s Toushinsai, expect F K Digital to be trying to crack the Western market sometimes in the new year.

desk Combos Through Time and Screen Transitions in This Latest Street Fighter Mixclip

Gliding gracefully between games in the series, desk’s latest Street Fighter mixclip is a thing of wonder; carrying combos across screen transitions and even different Street Fighter games. A exploding screen transition in Street Fighter V may lead to a follow up combo in Ultra Street Fighter 4, while some clips have a character traveling through time to finish their opponent off with a game hopping finisher.

As well as this time traveling combos, desk even mashes up scenes from the Street Fighter animated movie and recreates them in Street Fighter V, having both fights playing out side by side. This mixclip is truly a display of not only desk’s Street Fighter prowess, but his skills in the editing bay.
