Check out some hi-def pictures of Ed’s own strength from the new Street Fighter V CFN beta test

Ed’s going for those instant kills online: feast your eyes on some footage.

As part of the current Capcom Fighters Network beta test for Street Fighter V, both console and PC gamers can get a shot at trying out the next upcoming DLC fighter before his official release. Ed is now in the hands of the general public, so how’s the Psycho-boxer holding up? We rounded up some footage for you.

Naturally, Capcom released an official intro video to better detail Ed’s playstyle and unusual inputs. Matt Edwards breaks Ed down for us here:

A lot of great footage is appearing online as notable players give Ed a go. YogaFlame24 has uploaded some of the early “first look” gameplay, as well as some match footage of PIE|Smug vs. Floe!

Here’s a compilation from RektScrub, featuring CYG BST|PR Balrog tearing it up with his namesake’s student in online matches:

You can hang out a bit with VesperArcade as he studies, learns, and fights with Ed online a while:

Mr Slaynman plays a bit with Ed’s V-Trigger here, to see what combo fun can be found.

Xuses has also compiled a highlights reel of Ed match footage from the CFN beta, from a variety of different players.

Just can’t wait to play Ed in the main game? There’s already a PC mod to help with that, if you feel like chancing it!

Ed can be played online in the main Street Fighter V game with this PC mod

Can’t wait for Ed to get an official release? Here’s an option for PC players. But be careful!

The next character joining the Street Fighter V roster–Ed–is currently playable right now as part of the second CFN beta test on PlayStation 4 and PC. As DLC, he hasn’t been given an official release date for the Street Fighter V main game yet… but that isn’t going to slow down the PC modding crowd.

Apparently, using the mod below you can “liberate” Ed from his beta-only status and bring him into most of the modes–yes, including online–in the SFV main game for PC. Download links for the mod are in the video description. Of course, Capcom itself has frowned on this behavior before: specifically, when Juri and Urien were pulled out of General Story before their release–so use of Ed online through your CFN account could result in penalties/banning. Use this mod at your own risk!

The SRK Rollback: Best of May 5-11, 2017

Welcome to the Rollback: a frame-by-frame look back at our past week’s most notable news–and our favorite SRK articles–from May 5 to May 11, 2017!

Capcom reveals the official trailer for Ed–the “Young Commander”–and provides his V-system details

After a (probably) accidental leak and a period of silence afterwards, Capcom finally opened up this week about Ed, showing off his beefy new look and giving us details on how he will play–and he looks to shake thing s up a bit, much as Kolin did. He’s playable right now in the CFN beta test, too.

Frame 2:

You’re already dead: On-site at the Fist of the North Star National Championships

I love seeing how communities in Japan remain devoted to old and somewhat obscure–at least to us in the West–titles like this. Jazz gives us another great look at such an event, this time for the so-bad-it’s-good Hokuto no Ken.

CrossUPDP asks: Is Street Fighter V too easy, or just about right for the intended audience?

A debate not easily settled, depending on where your skill, experience, and expectations are in relation to Street Fighter, and fighting games in general. CrossUPDP gives us a good breakdown of how these factors will influence what you want–and get–out of Street Fighter V.

Guilty Gear was the game of choice when I visited Akihabara a few months ago, and it seems all that practice has been paying off. This REV 2 play is exceptional–and we get to fully enjoy it thanks to English commentary.

Umebura Japan MajorThe Japanese Super Smash Bros. for Wii U community comes together at Umebura Japan Major

One of the biggest Japanese Smash 4 events of all time, Umebura Japan Major was absolutely a celebration of all things Smash 4. In the end KEN couldn’t defend against MKLeo’s Mexican invasion, but there was tons of great Smash along the way.

With Injustice 2 just around the corner (finally!) the best in the business has spoken up about the characters he is most excited about trying out. Don’t take this as a tier list or anything of the sort, but it’s great to see what top players are excited about going into the IJ2’s release.

Here’s the schedule for this weekend’s Street Fighter V CFN beta test #2 for PC & PlayStation 4

The second beta test for Street Fighter V’s revamped CFN is live right now, until Sunday night. Free to try for pretty much everyone, here’s a chance for both console and PC players to try out the new features, balance changes, and the upcoming DLC fighter: Ed.

Here’s the schedule for this weekend’s Street Fighter V CFN beta test #2 for PC & PlayStation 4

Everything you need to know to help test the new Capcom Fighters Network.

Capcom has revealed the scheduled start and end for this weekend’s Capcom Fighters Network beta test; this time open to both PC and PlayStation 4 users, with active cross-play.

The test will begin on Thursday, May 11, at 6:00 PM PDT, and run throughout the weekend to end at 10:00 PM PDT on Sunday, May 14.

The beta test will include the new CFN functions and features, the upcoming balance patch, and all characters unlocked for use–including the not-yet-released “Young Commander” Ed. Only online functions are going to be available in the test. The beta test is open to all players even without a copy of Street Fighter V (PlayStation Plus is required on PS4), and is available to download now.

Street Fighter V servers will be down for more maintenance today

Online functions will be unavailable for most of the day.

Another bout of unexpected server maintenance will hit Street Fighter V today: this time running from 10:oo AM to 4:00 PM PDT.

Again, no specific reason for this particular batch of maintenance has been stated by Capcom; as this is the last day before the start of the new CFN beta test period, that is the likeliest culprit. Capcom still needs to restore the Temple Hideout stage to working order as well, so here’s hoping.

If you want to get ready and pre-download the CFN beta test for PS4 before it opens, it’s already available on the PlayStation Store.

Kolin keeps her cool with these stylish combos for Street Fighter V

Defeat Gill’s enemies with both style and strength.

Upcoming DLC character Ed is in the spotlight presently, but we shouldn’t forget about his immediate predecessor and how she shook up Street Fighter V’s gameplay herself. YouTuber cjbqulix admits to struggling to find passion for SFV, but Kolin’s unique style of play helped draw them back in.

Kolin has become known for her very strong combo potential, and in the video below cjbqulix explores this with some stylish and powerful new content that includes OTG combos into her Frost Tower Critical Art, Crush Counter juggles, and some resets and mixups, too.

Check out Ed’s extended Street Fighter V theme and some gameplay breakdowns, courtesy of VesperArcade

Get a good earful of Ed’s sweet theme music, then join VesperArcade in a closer look at Ed’s reveal trailer.

After Kolin’s reveal trailer featured a track from Lupe Fiasco, hearing more hip hop on Ed’s reveal was hardly a surprise–but most didn’t expect that what we heard is actually Ed’s in-game theme music! Definitely standing apart from other music in Street Fighter V so far, it’s great that we’re getting more variety. Check out VesperArcade’s extended mix of Ed’s theme below:

Naturally, VesperArcade has been closely examining what we’ve seen of Ed so far, and has provided a couple of videos discussing Ed’s playstyle as seen in the trailer. His simplified move inputs will definitely give him a very different feel than other characters on the roster.

CrossUPDP asks: Is Street Fighter V too easy, or just about right for the intended audience?

Does a greater quantity and complexity of mechanics make for a “better” game?

Inspired by BornFree‘s interviews of Street Fighter V pros at recent events, in which multiple players have stated something to the effect of Street Fighter V being too easy or simple, CrossUPDP has made a video examining that idea a little further. Comparing SFV to the much more elaborate Guilty Gear Xrd series, the question of whether or not more mechanics and more difficult execution make a game superior is explored. Their answer: yes, but to only a small percentage of the potential audience.

CrossUPDP divides the audience for Street Fighter V (and basically any fighting title) into three categories: the casuals, the pros, and the “in-betweeners”: more experienced players or casuals that are not at professional level and may or may not be looking to move up. With the vast majority of a game’s potential audience falling into the casual and in-between ranges, a game that is easier to understand and play will definitely be preferable to something more dauntingly complex, even while pros would prefer greater depth and versatility to accommodate their greater skill and experience. The high enrollment numbers for SFV events seem to indicate that the accessibility is drawing more players to compete.

The viewpoint of spectators–something clearly taken into consideration in SFV’s design–is also mentioned, as the average spectator can more easily enjoy watching a game with simpler, more obvious mechanics. Of course, spectators fall into the above categories too–so some will appreciate watching high-level mechanics and ability more than others.

Do you think Street Fighter V’s built-in “accessibility” serves it well, or should everyone just jump ship and play Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 at the end of the month? Sound off in the comments.

Thanks to Craig for the tip.

Street Fighter V’s CFN beta test 2 now available to download on PSN, along with new Battle Costume bundle

You’ll still have to wait to play until the beta goes live on the 11th, though!

CFN banner

PlayStation Plus users can download the new Capcom Fighters Network beta test today, if you’d like to have the file already downloaded and ready to run when the beta test starts up on May 11. It’s available to grab right now on the US/Canada PlayStation Store.

Another little surprise turned up on the PlayStation Store today as well: if you’ve been holding out on grabbing Battle Costumes for the original 16-character cast, they can now be purchased in a single shot bundle for $29.99 USD. Check out the Original Characters Battle Costume 1 Pack if you need to complete your collection. It’s a little encouraging to see that the costumes are getting a bundling and price break, at least eventually–as the majority of Premium outfits for the game have only been sold individually so far.

At the time of writing, the new beta and the Battle Costume bundle don’t seem to have appeared on Steam yet. The beta test is planned to run on both console and PC from May 11 to 14; it will feature the new CFN features, the upcoming balance patch, and all playable characters unlocked–including the recently-revealed Season 2 DLC fighter Ed.
