CEO 2017 Will Use the PlayStation 4 Version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

The (currently) newest version of this title will be the one played on at CEO 2017.

As soon as it was revealed that we’d be seeing a PlayStation 4 port of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the question arose as to whether this new version would become the new tournament standard–as players have reported that the game does have slight timing differences to prior editions. This weekend’s Undefeated already adopted the PS4 port of UMvC3 (with the caveat that they would revert to Xbox 360 is problems arise); now CEO 2017 will be following that example, as revealed on their tournament main page:

ceo 2017 games

Considering how many other titles on current-gen consoles are running at events this year, it is perhaps unsurprising, logistically, that the Xbox 360 would fall by the wayside. Time will tell if the upcoming Xbox One release of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3–due in March–will become preferred instead.

CEO Fighting Game Championships 2017 will be in Orlando, Florida July 16-18.

Thanks to Joel for the tip.

You Must Defeat Sheng Long to Stand a Chance! It’s the 25th Anniversary of the Classic EGM Hoax

The April Fool’s joke that kicked off Gouken’s story is a now a quarter-century old.

Capcom is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Street Fighter this year; but that also means it’s the 25th anniversary of the classic April Fool’s joke that ran in the April 1992 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly.

The hoax was presented as a means to unlock the mysterious “Sheng Long” in the original arcade version of Street Fighter II: using Ryu, and reaching M. Bison with nothing but Perfect victories, you must then survive ten rounds against the dictator without exchanging any blows. If successful, instead of a draw game, Sheng Long–Ryu and Ken’s long-lost master–will appear, dispose of Bison, and proceed to wreck you with his broken moveset.

Shenglong-street-fighter-japanzone
EGM even doubled-down on the gag by placing the “find the April Fool’s joke” contest form on the SAME PAGE.

The near-impossible trick to fight Sheng Long was soon exposed as a hoax, but is still remembered for the glorious gag it was. “Sheng Long” is born of the mistranslation in Ryu’s win quote, where “Sheng Long” was later corrected to “Dragon Punch” as intended.

ShengLong-screen

This hoax holds such a strong place in Street Fighter collective consciousness because it inspired design choices that made many of its aspects reality in future games. Sheng Long’s substitution for M. Bison mirrors the entry of Akuma as a hidden boss in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. And as for “Sheng Long”–he became Gouken in Street Fighter IV, making Sheng Long effectively canonical after many years. Gouken even has a win quote in Super Street Fighter IV that pays tribute to the original mistranslation–“You must defeat me to stand a chance!”–as if his very design and existence wasn’t tribute enough!

Undecided? Read the Arguments for Which Player’s Choice Title Deserves Your Vote for Evo 2017

SRK writing team members will each play advocate for one of the potential games!

As Mr. Wizard first announced and later elaborated a bit upon: the ninth main game for Evo 2017 is to be determined by a player vote-in, through donations to Make-a-Wish International via Generosity.com. Nine games: some from prior Evo events, some never before having a chance to appear there–and all are excellent games in their own right. The winning title not only fills out the roster, but gets a $10,000 prize pot bonus and will open the Sunday finals at Mandalay Bay’s arena.

As a charity drive, every vote counts toward a good cause (and you can vote for more than one!), but if you’re wondering which game(s) to support: starting today, Shoryuken will run one new feature per day, in which one of our writers will argue the merits of one of these titles on this list. So keep your eye out for these editorials–and remember that the voting closes at 12:00 PM PST on February 8!

Steam Users Reporting Inability to Play Ultra Street Fighter IV

Players reporting only a “black screen” at startup.

Steam users trying to boot up the second-last installment of the Street Fighter series–Ultra Street Fighter IV–are reporting today that their game will not load, instead sticking on a blank, black screen. The specific cause is not yet clear, but this is likely not an indication that Capcom is sneakily pulling support from the game: it is not the first time a “black screen bug” has been reported for the Steam version of USFIV. Windows 10-related issues have come up in discussion as well.

A test conducted on a the PlayStation 4 version confirms its online functions appear to be operating normally.

Thanks to Tim for the tip.
