No More Mutants? Rumored Marvel vs. Capcom 4 May Exclude X-Men Characters

Marvel licensing issues may knock all mutant characters out of the game at design level.

Even with the circulating “leaked” logo turning out as a fake, the rumors that Marvel vs. Capcom 4 is a real thing and will be revealed at the PlayStation Experience seem to be intensifying rather than dying down, getting a strong second wind from Polygon and GameSpot joining the chorus proclaiming the game’s existence. Significant of both of their reports, however, is the claim that a new Marvel vs. Capcom 4 would lean heavily on the Marvel Cinematic Universe for characters, and thus lose the characters that aren’t included in that licensing realm: namely the Fantastic Four and the X-Men.

Loss of series mainstays such as Magneto and Wolverine–as well as popular newcomers to Marvel vs. Capcom 3 such as X-23, Phoenix, and Deadpool–would be a strong blow to many fans, even as the MCU could bring interesting new fighters in the form of Ant-Man, or Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy, among others.

Maximilian took to his YouTube channel to discuss the implications to the fans–including himself–of the removal of the X-Men from the series:

Maximilian raises an interesting point that the most recent reissues of the Marvel vs. Capcom games included only the Marvel Super Heroes/MvC titles, and conspicuously not X-Men vs. Street Fighter–indicating that this separation may have been a long time coming already.

VesperArcade also discussed his thoughts on the potential mutant purge, and offers a lengthy video that lays out what the Marvel licensing landscape looks like right now, and what characters would thus be viable for a new MvC game if this reported removal is true:

Is a Marvel vs. Capcom 4 without mutants a dealbreaker for you? Until confirmation from Capcom, it’s still all just rumors.

Theory: The Next Street Fighter V Addition Isn’t Akuma–It’s Goutetsu

Gouken returned from the dead–why not his master?

Even after Yoshinori Ono casting doubt on what we thought we saw at the closing of Red Bull Battle Grounds, Street Fighter V fans are still holding out hope that the Demon will Rage his way into SFV as we hoped. AKumah Matata has a different theory though: perhaps the reveal trailer wasn’t teasing Akuma at all; what if it was actually teasing the arrival of Goutetsu, Akuma’s (and Gouken’s) own master?

The video below discusses the possible evidence: Goutetsu’s CFN Portal site profile, his appearance on the packaging materials for certain Japanese editions of the game, and the length of his hair as compared to Akuma’s usual presentation. It’s a long shot of a theory… watch the video and judge for yourself.

Of course, there may be no new Street Fighter V character at all, and the reveal trailer may instead have something to do with a possible Marvel vs. Capcom 4 reveal.

Maximilian Outlines His Predictions and Hopes for Akuma in Street Fighter V

Will he be power made flesh–or a big flop?

We were all so sure the Raging Demon was on his way to Street Fighter V… and as it turns out, maybe he is, maybe he isn’t.

Based the assumption that Akuma is joining the SFV roster soon (as this was recorded before the Famitsu interview linked above, casting doubt on that) Maximilian took to his YouTube channel and added this video as a follow-up to his recent video outlining what changes he wants to see in Street Fighter V–describing at length why he feels the addition of Akuma to SFV is so important, and what shape the Demon’s gameplay might take based on his previous incarnations. This is basically an open letter to Capcom to keep Akuma impressive and interesting, and not disappoint the players and fans by utilizing the V-system for a potential Akuma in the most boring, predictable ways.

Do you think Maximilian is on the mark, or way off? If we get an Akuma with a teleport V-Skill and a basic Raging Demon Critical Art, we’ll know Maximilian was right–in the worst way.

Marvel vs. Capcom 4: Rise of the Reveal Rumors

Is a New Age of Heroes upon us?

Over the past two days, rumors that an upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom 4 reveal is immiment at the upcoming PlayStation Experience have been circulating throughout the internet–with their apparent origin point being in a NeoGAF forum thread, then ripping into Twitter like a Berserker Barrage.

Admist the discussion, the following images have surfaced–supposedly from a reveal trailer?

VesperArcade took to his YouTube channel to discuss (and in some areas, debunk) these MvC4 rumors. He wisely reminds us of the Baiken “leak” that worked up the Guilty Gear community not too long ago, and how that turned out (spoiler: it was fake).

And of course, a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 producer has chimed in, denying anything is in the works for a Marvel vs. Capcom 4:

Is it an orchestrated leak, or just lies gaining momentum from a fanbase eager for a follow-up to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3? It is possible that Yoshinori Ono later denied that the Akuma reveal trailer from Red Bull Battle Grounds indicated Akuma was coming to Street Fighter V, because it was actually some kind of bait-and-switch for a MvC4 playable reveal at PlayStation Experience instead?

December 3rd’s Capcom Cup will put to rest what is real, and what is hope and speculation–but Mahvel may be be sooner than we expected.

Famitsu Interview with Yoshinori Ono Suggests Akuma’s Street Fighter V Reveal Was Not What It Seemed

Oh, Yoshinori Ono… what ARE you guys up to? Teasing Akuma to the already somewhat annoyed Street Fighter fanbase, and then say stuff like this… Capcom Japan is risking SFV’s already tarnished reputation. We only hope that whatever PR game is being played here, we see something impressive at PlayStation Experience.

With Ed Boon already polling fans about other guest superheroes to appear in Injustice 2, the Watchmen seem like a perfect fit for potential guest fighters. While Dr. Manhattan may be a tad too powerful, I’d love to play as Nite Owl or Rorschach.

Since BlazBlue: Central Fiction is my current game of choice, it’s fascinating to see some analysis go into the metagame already. This is one of the most in-depth and interesting tier lists I’ve seen put together for any game, and it’s well worth a read just for SKD’s thoughts on what makes a character strong in the BlazBlue series, let alone the actual rankings. He doesn’t rate my one true love Susano’o very high, but I’ll give him a pass on that, just this once.

dr_rayCapcom Pro Tour Player Analysis: What Can DR Ray Bring from the Dominican Republic?

One of my favorite things about the Capcom Pro Tour analysis that we have done here at SRK is that it highlights players who aren’t so well-known as Daigo and Justin Wong. DR Ray is one the players I personally don’t know much about, so getting a little bit more insight into his style and background is what makes this piece stand out to me–though the whole series is definitely worth looking at, through!

Capcom Planning Support for Street Fighter V Until 2020, Main Focus is Esports Presence

Street Fighter V has more time ahead than behind it.

In another recent Famitsu interview, Street Fighter V producers Yoshinori Ono and Tomoaki Ayano talked about the long-term plan for Street Fighter V, and if other fighting games figure in alongside. Here’s an excerpt, as translated from Japanese by EventHubs’ Nicholas “MajinTenshinhan” Taylor:

Famitsu: So, moving back to the earlier subject, how far does your current road map for Street Fighter V development go?
Ono: It’s not just a 1-2 year thing. We’re looking pretty far ahead… We’ve planned out as far as 2020 or so.
Ayano: Street Fighter V is a title we’re adding on to as it goes along, so we’re working on it while planning ahead on the best way to develop it further.
Famitsu: Are we going to see other titles than Street Fighter during that time, as well… ?
Ayano: That’s not something I’d know, at my level, haha. Please, Ono-san, take over.
Ono: I’d be happy if we could. But first, we’d have to solidify Street Fighter V as an esports title. I said in the beginning that we’ve seen a higher number of entrants than we had in the Street Fighter IV era, but we’d like to heighten that even further. The more people participate, the bigger tournaments we can host, and the more people are going to watch them, which is directly connected with our sales, and that’s going to decide the future.

Check out the original interview with Famitsu here.
