The SRK Rollback: Best of August 18-24, 2017

Welcome to the Rollback: a frame-by-frame look back at our past week’s most notable news — and our favorite SRK articles — from August 18 to August 24, 2017!

Zavian “mushin_Z” Sildra, Editor-in-Chief:

dissidia srkDissidia Final Fantasy NT releases January 30th for PlayStation 4 — here are the pre-order details

We finally have a release date for this unusual arena fighter, and I’m looking forward to it. The closed beta is also downloadable for PlayStation 4 today — did you get your code?

UDON’s STREET FIGHTER UNLIMITED Volume 3: The Balance now available to pre-order on Amazon

It’s been quite a while since UDON’s Street Fighter Unlimited comic series wrapped up, so this collection is long due. Good to see some progression towards store shelves, albeit slowly.

Frame 3:
tekkenbowl
Tekken 7 sets an August 31st launch date for DLC Pack #1, adds Tekken Bowling and costumes

Gotta say, I much prefer this idea of getting new costumes just for having the season pass, rather than a certain Capcom game’s constant single-shot premium outfits… and Tekken Bowling might prove to be a fun diversion.

Frame 4:
Android 16 DBFZ
Dragon Ball FighterZ slated for a February 2018 release; Closed beta sign-ups are now open

With a steady stream of gameplay footage coming out of Gamescom, the FGC’s hunger for this title is only growing stronger!

Frame 5:
sfv_necalli_torrent_of_power_activationStreet Fighter V’s arcade mode is supposedly coming in January — according to dataminers

Branded as Super Street Fighter V or not, the evidence mounts that we’ll be seeing some significant additions to Street Fighter V — and the sooner, the better.

It’s awesome to see that Pokkén is still chugging along, and these Championships were great fun. Tonosuma has put himself firmly in the conversation for best in the world at this point — just in time for the release of Pokkén DX!

Frame 2:
MagentaShoryuken preview: Paradise Arcade Shop’s Magenta could be most customizable lever ever created

It’s fascinating to see the inventiveness of the FGC at work, and in the Magenta it has been put to work and then some. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing whether this is picked up by the FGC at large, or will just end up something of a curiosity.

Frame 3:
Earth RomancerEarth Romancer shows off its anime/platform fighter inspirations in new gameplay trailer

I’m not going to lie, my first impressions of Earth Romancer were not good. With this trailer, however, my interests are truly piqued, and I’ll definitely be giving it a go when it comes out.

Frame 4:
NES30 StickShoryuken review: 8Bitdo NES30 Arcade Stick for Nintendo Switch

With a new console comes new sticks, and we’ve got our hands on one of the very first for the Nintendo Switch. It may not be the best possible start, but it’s certainly not bad.

Frame 5:
RoA Ori and SeinOri and Sein are now available to play in Rivals of Aether

Not only does Rivals of Aether get a full release this week, but also an awesome new guest character in the shape of Ori and Sein. I’ve managed to have a go with them, and they’re a fascinating duo to mess around with.

Learn to cut corners on your Dragon Punches in Street Fighter V with Git Gud Series #8: Execution shortcuts

Learn some easy ways to get the move you want, when you want it.

Street Fighter IV‘s game engine was well-noted for containing many built-in “shortcuts” that allowed inputs other than the literal movelist’s direction/button sequences to activate special moves — and thus providing alternate means of getting those moves in certain situations, once you learned to utilize the shortcut. Street Fighter V follows this design tradition, and has a number of shortcut-able moves as well — particular the Dragon Punch input.

In episode 8 of World Warrior’s “Git Gut Series,” they break down known move shortcuts in Street Fighter V that you can integrate into your own execution. They start with the dreaded “walking Shoryuken”: trying to enter a fireball motion immediately after walking forward will result in a DP instead (because of the game’s reading the forward input as the beginning of a DP), and while this is typically an input error that shoto characters need to work to avoid while in neutral, it can be used to make combo inputs a little easier, too. SFV also retains SFIV’s crouching DP (down-forward, down-back, down-forward+punch), and a similar motion can be used to more easily perform Ryu’s down+HP → heavy Shoryuken → CA combo. World Warrior also discusses the “cross-cut” Shoryuken, used to get a DP to come out in the right direction against an opponent attempting a jump-in cross-up.

Variations on a tyrannical theme: More V-Skill & V-Trigger setups for Street Fighter V’s Urien

Prove the power of the Illuminati!

Following up on their prior video demonstrating some deadly setups made possible by combining Urien’s V-Skill (Metallic Aura) and Aegis Reflector in Street Fighter V, YouTuber Aeon Aeon has extrapolated even more nastiness from this concept.

The first video demonstrates using the combination setup to cover 3-frame normals on wakeup:

A variation on the setup for the corner:

Here’s some more options on what to do with the second Aegis Reflector.

Additionally, the following three videos look at ways to loop the Headbutt after V-Trigger, as well as setups that follow utilizing the Aegis Reflector. Both horrible and beautiful to behold!

Ryu and Sagat clash in fan-made “Street Fighter: Rise” from AWP Films, to celebrate Street Fighter’s 30th Anniversary

A classic face-off re-imagined by devoted fans!

street fighter rise 2

To mark Street Fighter’s 30th Anniversary, AWP Films has re-created the classic face-off between Ryu and Sagat in which Sagat learns the power of the Shoryuken the hard way. Inspired by the opening of 1994’s Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, this fan-film mixes the real actors (Davis Noir as Ryu, and Barret Horiuchi as Sagat) with animated backgrounds and effects, and includes many of the fighters’ signature moves from throughout the franchise. From the director:

I was highly inspired by the opening fight from the animated film. And then it evolved to some ultra stylized and astronomical battle. It became more in spirit of the games: from hit sparks to superhuman abilities. This is Street Fighter: Alpha to VS to 5! – Francois D

Shoryuken interview: BrolyLegs talks about Evo, training, and AbleGamers

Brolylegs’ skill and competitive drive are inspiring to all fighting game players, regardless of whatever physical limitations they may or may not have. I’m a fan particularly because of his Chun-Li character specialization!

Frame 2:

Shoryuken review: Nidhogg II is a bizarre, hilarious, and fun indie fighter

The sequel I didn’t know I was waiting for turned out to fully deliver on challenge and fun — and I can even get behind the somewhat divisive new art style.

Frame 3:

Shoryuken interview: LI Joe talks East Coast Throwdown, Evo 2016, and ELEAGUE

LI Joe’s dedication to the FGC is enough to get anyone fired up and ready to get more involved in their local community. The fight is only part of the whole picture.

For Honor NobushiFor Honor player wins a $10,000 tournament using an infamous in-game exploit

Take heed of Ubisoft’s mistake, fellow fighting game developers. A recent For Honor tournament was won by a player ruthlessly using an infamous glitch which had not been banned or patched out ahead of the event. There is no honor when money’s on the line.

Frame 2:
Injustice 2 Pack ShotNew Injustice 2 characters to be announced alongside Steve Aoki & Don Diablo charity match at Gamescom 2017

Gamescom’s going to be a jam-packed event for fighting game fans, as NetherRealm Studios are planning to reveal the characters coming in Fighter Pack 2 during a special charity match between Steve Aoki and Don Diablo. Fingers crossed for Spawn!

Super Smash Con 2016Here’s everything you missed from Super Smash Con 2017

Super Smash Con has grown into a cornerstone of the Smash calendar, and is quickly threatening to become the biggest all around Smash event of the year. SFV Karin 30th costume crop
Capcom reveals Street Fighter V “30th Anniversary” premium outfits for Karin, Ibuki, Guile, and M. Bison

Capcom continues the SFV tradition of adding new outfits rather than addressing any of the requested changes the FGC is clamoring for… at least they’re pretty cool outfits. But surely more cast members than these four warrant 30th anniversary treatment?

Brook is working on a combination battery pack/wireless adapter/multi-console converter for the Xbox One pad

Brook’s all-in-one adapter will provide a lot of flexibility for your Xbox One controller — if it goes into production.

Well known for their controller converters already, Brook now has their sights on a new device dubbed the X One Adapter: a battery pack for the Xbox One controller that will also function as a wireless adapter and a controller converter, allowing you to use the Xbox One pad on PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch as well.

X One Adapter

Brook is aiming for a November 2017 release, but production of this new multi-platform converter is not yet assured; Brook is presently crowdfunding for support. Those interested in learning more about this potential product should check out Brook’s Kickstarter page.
