– Everspace Review – The Last Starfighter
Everspace is stunning. There’s no way around it, the game makes an incredible first impression. Within minutes, you’re zipping through asteroid belts, dogfighting with enemies you don’t quite understand, and scavenging wrecked freighters for resources you aren’t sure how to use. The Unreal 4 Engine renders these spacescapes in such gorgeous detail that once the threat has cleared, you have to pause to take it all in.

This week Tim Eisen does that melodramatic writer thing where he subtly vents about being uncomfortable with change (like most old people) while waxing about the old days in the MMORPG genre. He insults Lois Lane’s reporting abilities too…yes, he really did, we aren’t just writing that to get you to click…
– Five Reasons Why MMOs Are Making a Comeback
Many game industry people continue to talk about how MMOs have come and gone. However, we continue to see major events which point to the opposite. Players are seeking more online experiences through console and mobile gameplay. As many in the industry predicted early on, eventually every game will move into the online space. Sure, plenty of RPGs or fighting games might keep off the intrawebs, but as trends continue, there will be plenty of MMOs coming over the next few years.

– Don?t Dismiss ?The Surge? Because It?s a Clone
Clones: we’ve all seen them. As MMO players, we saw a whole generation of MMORPGs “WoW clones” attempting to cash in on World of Warcraft’s success. Deck 13 had the label thrown at their first game, Lords of the Fallen, a dark fantasy RPG which played it close to the Dark Souls formula. This week they released their second action RPG, The Surge, and are hearing it again.
– The Surge Does a Lot of Things Right
To make this easy, The Surge is Edge of Tomorrow meets Dark Souls, which is a very apt analogy now that I think about it. The grungy sci-fi setting mixed with gameplay that can be broken down as Live, Die, Repeat, Break controller in an uncontrollable rage fit. Yup. Sounds about right.
