ELEAGUE Street Fighter V 2018 Invitational Playoffs: Preview and stream details

After battling their way through the group stage, the eight finalists of the ELEAGUE Street Fighter V 2018 Invitational will face-off in the playoffs tomorrow for their shot at the $250,000 prize pool. Each finalist fought their way through a six-player round-robin and elimination bracket during the group stage, and losses in the elimination bracket will carry over into the playoffs. The player pool includes five Japanese players, two Americans, and a single representative from the UK.

ELEAGUE Playoff Bracket 2018

Winners Bracket

Echo Fox|Tokido vs. Echo Fox|Punk

This is a rematch of one of the most memorable Street Fighter V matches of 2017, but Punk is ready to put his 0-6 loss in the Evo Grand Finals behind him for good. Since that match Tokido has consistently been at the top of international events while Punk’s stock has slowly dropped. But Punk is still the reigning ELEAGUE Champion and will have to overcome this demon to defend his title.

“I don’t really think about it anymore. That’s last year, this is a different year so I just try to forget about it,” Punk said, when I asked him about learning from the loss. “But everyone asks me the question so much that I have no choice but to think about it. I just try to put it in the past because stuff happens. Sometimes you get bodied, sometimes you win.”

Tokido is regarded as the best Akuma in the world, while Punk has added Cammy and Chun-Li to his roster of tournament characters, alongside his signature Karin. In an interview before the playoffs Punk said that for him to have an actual rivalry with Tokido, he’ll need to beat him first.

CYG BST|Daigo vs. Mouseesports|Problem X

While Guile vs. Bison is historically one of the hardest match-ups in the entire Street Fighter series, the Dictator has some new tricks in Street Fighter V. Several Japanese players have noted that Problem X seems to exceed the level of any Japanese Bison players, and Problem acknowledged that he has been pushing the character to the limit. He was able to score a 2-1 win over NuckleDu’s Guile in Group C but Daigo’s slow style could bring a much different look to the match. Problem X said he has been able to prepare for the Guile match-up with other European players, but struggled to find Akuma and Ibuki players to practice for Tokido and Fujimura.

Daigo Umehara continues to build his legend in the Street Fighter V era
Daigo Umehara continues to build his legend in the Street Fighter V era.

As the world’s most popular Street Fighter player, Daigo will have no shortage of fighting gamers cheering him on. But when asked why a newcomer to Street Fighter might root for him in the playoffs, Daigo — who has been playing competitively since the late ’90s — said he that he wants his performance to inspire people his age.

“I’m the oldest of all and I want to show everyone who’s as old as I am, I can still fight,” Umehara said, via translator.

Losers Bracket

Echo Fox| Momochi vs. CYG|Dogura

This match is a tough one to predict, because of Momochi’s character choices. During an interview before the tournament Dogura said he was worried about whether Momochi would play Cody or Kolin in their match and each time he asked, Momochi refused to answer. Dogura said he’s been preparing for Kolin but has yet to play against a strong Cody. Dogura lost to Wolfgang’s Blanka at CEO 2018, so his fear of Season 3 characters might be justified.

Momochi admitted that his focus in Street Fighter V has been on developing his Cody, but the character remains hard to win with. During their recent meeting in the Rage Esports All-Star League Momochi beat Dogura with Kolin, so he can always go back if a Cody pick doesn’t work out.

FUDOH|Fujimura vs. RISE|Smug

Fujimura is the probably the hottest Street Fighter V player in the world right now with major wins at CEO and Stunfest. He’s also one of the few top players using Ibuki, but Smug’s Balrog is even more rare. Smug is the closest thing to a wild card in the playoff bracket, and he’s been playing Shine and other New York players to get himself ready. While Fujimura is certainly the favorite here, a lack of experience with Balrog could create a chance for an upset.

Mike Moh — Ryu in Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist — will be playing Bruce Lee in new Tarantino film

Though Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist was heralded as one of the best video-game-to-live-action adaptations yet seen, video game movies and shows still have a (perhaps, deserved) stigma about them. Luckily, that stigma hasn’t impacted the future job prospects of Mike Moh. He was SF:AF’s Ryu, and now he’s Quentin Tarantino’s vision for Bruce Lee in his new movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood:

Moh will be starring alongside Leonard DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Dakota Fanning, and more in the star-studded ensemble cast. And he might not have got there at all had he not thrown a Hadouken on YouTube first.

New details and screenshots of SoulCalibur VI’s Talim reveal insight into her mechanics

Let see which way the wind’s blowing!

As Talim sails into SoulCalibur VI, many fans are pleased to see her return, particularly because she was absent in SoulCalibur V. Shortly after her announcement, new information has arrived with a few details about her refined playstyle.

According to a Gamer.jp interview, with translations by Flying_Wonkey, Talim will still, of course, be a speedy fighter with stances that rush the opponent down with a barrage of strikes. The newest installment of the series reworks her Wind Saults, making them more accessible to use. Additionally, she has a new “Air Rage” stance which can be used offensively or defensively. And lastly, her Critical Edge actually restores her health, so she is yet another character with healing powers (Yoshimitsu’s super also heals him).

Enjoy the screenshots below, and stay tuned to Shoryuken for upcoming SoulCalibur VI news.

Super Smash Bros. series amiibo pricing and release details for Ridley, Inkling, and Wolf revealed

Also, re-releases of older figures are coming soon!

With Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Nintendo launched amiibo, their interactive figurine line that represented every single character from the crossover brawler. Now that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is being released, with every character from past titles and new additions, Nintendo is releasing more figures for the complete roster.

The next three figures in the Super Smash Bros. line, which you can see below, are for Ridley, Inkling, and Wolf. The first two are new playable characters for the series, while Wolf, on the other hand, was playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but wasn’t in the succeeding game Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

All three new amiibo figures will be arriving on December 7, 2018 — the same day that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate arrives on the Switch — and will retail for $15.99.

In addition to this, Nintendo has also announced that many of the older figures from the Super Smash Bros. series will be getting re-releases. Specifics as to which figures will be sold or when they will be available have yet to be announced. Each re-released figure will be going for its original $12.99 price tag.

“Think, Don’t Mash!” explains the virtue of playing with only five moves in fighting games

“FiveMoves” reads the cheeky handle that Press Button Win uses to play online. Perhaps “FiveishMoves” was already taken, but that’s alright — it’s still perfect for his brand new tutorial series “Think, Don’t Mash!”, which tackles the concept of simplifying move-lists in order to learn a new character or game. While the example provided here is performed in Street Fighter V, it’s a broad concept that applies across all fighters.

The concept is as simple as the effort required to make it work — by forming a gameplan around a few moves, you learn to use those moves better. It also helps commit that information into your long-term memory, and gradually, you can build a nuanced understanding of a character’s entire repertoire through this simple chunking exercise.

Hit Box demonstrates the new Smash Box’s functionality and design

Are you a Smash player that’s been on the fence about Hit Box‘s new Smash Box controller? The company has put a new demonstration video just for you:

Featuring programmable variables for tilt values and angles, the Smash Box’s functionality is centered largely around “modifier” buttons. As demonstrated in this out-of-the-box beginner’s guide, the modifier button allows you to toggle between full and half-held presses — this gives you control that is more difficult to achieve with an analog stick.

Composer Daniel Lindholm talks about his work on the themes for Ed, Cody, Zeku, and Sakura in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Musings with the music meister of DLC fighters.

With his return to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Cody also brings with him a new take on his classic theme. This new theme was the work of Daniel Lindholm, who also did a few other songs for the game — including those for other DLC characters such as Ed, Menat, Zeku, and Sakura.

GINX Esports recently had an interview with Lindholm where the latter got a chance to talk about the creative process behind these themes.

First up, to get it out of the way, Ed theme was loosely based on Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” as some have speculated.  In fact, the similarity was enough that Capcom actually had them change it up a bit. “They said, ‘You managed to replicate that song, now please change it so we don’t get sued,” he states.

He ended up changing the bassline, this time taking inspiration from another well-known artist: Tupac Shakur. He took inspiration from “The Humpty Dance”, a song that Tupac did while as part of the alternative hip hop group Digital Underground.

Among the themes that Lindholm has worked on, Zeku’s theme has become a fan-favorite. For the aged Bushinryu master’s theme, he decided to go with genres that today’s generation may not be listening to. Hence, we hear a lot of ’70s disco — something he felt went with the Zeku’s outfits. Said since Zeku does come from Japan, he eventually decided to substitute in a flute instead of the saxophone you’d usually hear in funk music. However, the unreleased Saxophone versions of the theme can be listened to on his YouTube channel:

Meanwhile, Sakura’s may be at the opposite end of the spectrum, with some players preferring the more classic sounding “Kasugano residence” stage theme. Lindholm explains that he wanted Sakura’s theme to reflect that she had grown up.

“I think the character resembles her growth from fanhood to womanhood,” he states. “Her character needs to be more mature, and that’s why we settled on this… not club-house, but straight-house music for her.”

As for Cody’s theme, Lindholm refers to the now iconic voice line from his Street Fighter IV theme – “Turn the beat back.” For Street Fighter V, he sampled this and cut it up, word for word. He also added in elements of New York hip-hop to bring life to the sound of Metro City. Interestingly enough, the initial versions sounded a bit darker.

“It ended up as more of the Bronx, as a darker hip hop. The brass section has been the same, but the bassline was darker in that part. It didn’t sound positive for Cody’s new perspective on life.” Lindholm continues saying, “He’s had this nihilistic view, but now that he has a purpose in life, I wanted to make it lighter. The intro was a small inspiration from SFIV.”

Of course, that’s just part of the interview, you can read the rest, including tidbits on his work on the music from the game’s story modes over at GINX Esports.
