What are the problems with auto combos in Dragon Ball FighterZ?

Maybe “controversial” is a strong word, but auto combo mechanics have been points of strong discussion in the fighting game community. It seems like many games include it now, including one of the most popular current titles, Dragon Ball FighterZ. While it’s a tool intended to help out beginners and casual players, YouTuber jmcrofts argues against it, and offers a few ways to make it better for everyone.

jmcrofts recognizes the use of auto combos for beginner players, but notes how powerful block pressure is in the game, and that it’s easy to force the opponent to keep blocking; and auto combos aid in that. He says that this impacts footsies negatively because it’s tough to whiff punish, since auto combos just keep chaining regardless of hitting or not. They also auto-correct if the opponents side switch during them, and some characters like Cell have really strong auto combos. He doesn’t propose entirely removing this mechanic, but he would like to see certain adjustments.

What’s your opinion on auto combos? Voice it below in the comments.

Capcom and Arc System Works collaborate with 21 Pirates for Art Competition at VSFighting 2018

Founded in 2010, VSFighting is an annual FGC major based in the West Midlands, UK. Though the tournaments themselves bring out the UK’s best players, gamers won’t be the only ones locked in competition at the venue: Artists that love Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle will be, too.

In association with Capcom and Arc System Works, Art Collective 21 Pirates is running an art competition for themed pieces featured characters from the aforementioned games. Winners will get their artwork on display at the venue and a free ticket to VSFighting 2018! If you know your way around a paintbrush and want to enter, you can go to the Street Fighter and BlazBlue contest pages for more information.

Convert into big damage with these practical Linne combos for Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st]

Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st]‘s Linne is a lightning fast, pixie-like character with a double jump, roll, and one of the game’s more oppressive fireball approach tools. With all the options she has to mix-up and pressure the opponent (particularly in a game where zoning and footsies makes that tough to do) its important to convert off any opportunities that present themselves.

If this sounds like your sort of character, then check out FGpop‘s latest combo video above. These are practical and damaging combos for the new Linne player to get started with — With this damage output, once you do get in, every hit will matter.

Street Fighter V Cody video roundup — Zonk trades, desk V-Trigger combos, day one bread ‘n’ butters, and more!

Cody’s back, and he’s ready to clean up the streets! The (new) mayor comes to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition with his Final Fight weapons applied to his V-Triggers, a new projectile, and more. As usual, players are already breaking down Capcom’s latest character, so let’s take a look at what Cody players can try on their first day in office:

VesperArcade starts us off with basic hit confirms and bread ‘n’ butter combos.

Doopliss shows off some practical damage and a clear example of Cody’s stun capabilities.

nevillebamshew gives us a nice trade situation for Cody’s Zonk in block strings.

Frame Advantage, in addition to showing off some BnBs, breaks down common tick throws, basic playstyle info, and more.

desk shows off his knife play with these VT1 combos. I wish Cody could just always c.LP the wrong way.

But for sheer flash factor alone, desk makes VT2 look like the V-Trigger of choice. Batter up!

Go psycho with NurseLee’s EX Katapult setups for Falke in Street Fighter V

In Street Fighter V Season 3, Falke gives the first impression of a character with a lot of powerful tools at her disposal — but her potential to be a worthy wielder of Psycho Power has yet to be unleashed at this early stage since her release. Here to help us explore the possibilities is NurseLee, whose latest Street Fighter V tutorial focuses on various setup options that are available following Falke’s EX Katapult.

EX Katapult launches the opponent a fair distance into the air, giving Falke the opportunity to do two complete forward dashes, achieve a spacing advantage and still have a window to pull of a damaging follow-up attack. Check it out as NurseLee breaks down some of the cards you have to play once you’ve closed the gap and swooped in for the kill.

These basic combo videos for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle DLC characters will get you started

The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga is now available on PlayStation 4

For any fans of classic fighting games from the ’90s, here’s a great surprise from SNK. The company has announced The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga is now available on the PlayStation 4.

Originally released on the PlayStation 2, as well as PlayStation Portable and Wii over a decade ago, The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga compiles together the first 5 games in the series, from the seminal The King of Fighters ’94, to the tournament favorite dream match The King of Fighters ’98.

The ports themselves also feature extra modes not in the original such as a color edit mode, and an option to switch to an arranged version of the soundtrack.

This new release of The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga is still based on that PlayStation 2 version.

Update for Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection coming June 28, details revealed

Improvements incoming!

Capcom promised us “improvements” to the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection — and today, they have revealed both when we’ll be seeing a patch and what it will address (at least on every platform but the Switch).

PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam users can expect an update tomorrow, June 28, around 10:00 AM PT. A patch is still on the way for the Switch version as well, but is taking longer to prepare and still doesn’t have a set launch date.

So, what’s in the patch? There were a number of things fans wanted fixes for, and it looks like at least some will be fixed up. Here’s the list from Capcom-Unity:

PlayStation 4:

  • A matchmaking filter has been added. Users will now be able to select the minimum connection strength for opponents to match up with online
  • Lobby issues have been improved
  • Akuma is no longer playable in Ranked Mode for Super Street Fighter II Turbo
  • Street Fighter III: New Generation and Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact – Giant Attack now output sound in stereo
  • Various localization improvements

Xbox One:

  • Akuma is no longer playable in Ranked Mode for Super Street Fighter II Turbo
  • Street Fighter III: New Generation and Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact – Giant Attack now output sound in stereo
  • Various localization improvements
  • Note: The Xbox One version of Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection currently uses Microsoft’s system for optimizing matchmaking for users with strong signals. Therefore, a matchmaking filter was not implemented

Steam:

  • A matchmaking filter has been added. Users will now be able to select the minimum connection strength for opponents to match up with online
  • A fix for direct input controllers where some users were unable to use diagonal movements
  • Akuma is no longer playable in Ranked Mode for Super Street Fighter II Turbo
  • Street Fighter III: New Generation and Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact – Giant Attack now output sound in stereo
  • A matchmaking filter has been added. Users will now be able to select the minimum connection strength for opponents to match up with online

I’m not sure what “various localization improvements” means, but overall this looks to cover most of the complaints so far — outside of adding additional versions/upgrades of the games (which some players are still hoping for). Look for the update tomorrow morning!
