The SRK Rollback: Best of December 21-27, 2018

Welcome to the Rollback: a frame-by-frame look back at our past week’s most notable news — and our favorite SRK articles — from December 21 to December 27, 2018!

Frame 1:
Capcom-Fighters-Top-5-Moments-Capcom-Cup-2018
Capcom Fighters presents the top 5 moments of Capcom Cup 2018

If you want to see the best in Street Fighter, Capcom Cup does not disappoint. Itazan was near-unstoppable this year!

Frame 2:
animeascension2019
Dragon Ball FighterZ tournament cancelled at Anime Ascension due to “unforeseen circumstances”

Something stinks on the intellectual property side for Dragon Ball FighterZ, potentially kneecapping the esports future of one of the best fighting games out there. However…

Frame 3:
Base Goku Dragon Ball FighterZ Nimbus ResizeToei Animation states that they have nothing to do with blocking Dragon Ball FighterZ tournaments

With their connection to the franchise and a litigious reputation, Toei was believed to be the culprit in the vanishing DBFZ events. It seems someone else is to blame.

Frame 4:

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition’s sponsored content is no longer available — at least for now

While it may appear that Capcom is backing off due to the bad press of their ill-conceived Sponsored Content, the mechanisms to deliver the content are still in the game, so don’t get your hopes up yet. More likely that new ads are on the way now that the CPT season is over.

Katsuhiro Harada is now taking charge of Bandai Namco’s esports strategy team

I would like to pretend that this means SoulCalibur VI will get a TWT-esque tour, but I know better.

Frame 2:
inkling
Inkling’s roller causes inconsistent and potentially glitchy interactions in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Considering everything else the roller does, I genuinely don’t understand the need to make these weird physics interactions.

Frame 3:

Omen of Sorrow announces free DLC character Erzébet Bathory for January 2019, future DLC plans

Omen of Sorrow is doing DLC right.

Frame 4:

New Super Smash Bros. Ultimate “Attack Cancel” tech allows new dashing approaches, Rosalina death combo

Ultimate has a bright future if it can continue to develop interesting new tricks like this.

Frame 5:

Merry Christmas SNK fans! There hasn’t been a better time to get into The King of Fighters XIV.

Inkling’s roller causes inconsistent and potentially glitchy interactions in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Inklings side special in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is their trademark Roller, which covers the ground with ink. Nintendo decided that the ink should interact with the physics of other special moves, and… perhaps you should judge for yourself if these interactions were intentional:

It would appear that the ink decreases horizontal distance traveled while either decreasing or increasing vertical distance. This seems to be selectively applied, however, on a move-by-move basis. Moves with slides appear to increase their slide distance dramatically, such as Meta Knight’s teleport, while others might get stuck all-together, such as Jigglypuff’s roll.

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition’s sponsored content is no longer available — at least for now

A couple of weeks back, right before Capcom Cup 2018Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition received one of its more controversial additions: Sponsored Content. Now, just a couple of weeks after, the sponsored content is no longer available.

As of the time of writing, advertisements on stages and the loading screen have been turned off. At the same time, trying to select color 3-10 on an “Ad Style” costume will simply give the message “the sponsor is currently not available, so you cannot use the selected color.”

Some may speculate that this was due to the negative reaction to the sponsored content. However, the original posting for the Capcom Pro Tour shows that they were scheduled to run only up until December 25. Additionally, other in-game posts about the sponsored content state that they will “change intermittently”, stating that “if a sponsorship is not available at the time and you selected any colors from 3-10 of the Ad Style outfit in your battle settings, you will be forced to use colors 1 and 2.”

Of course, that’s not to say that Capcom isn’t looking at the feedback. After Capcom Cup, producer Yoshinori Ono sent out a tweet thanking the community for providing feedback, and that they would “consider how we can improve this new feature for players in the future.”

Katsuhiro Harada is now taking charge of Bandai Namco’s esports strategy team

For the longest time, Bandai Namco’s Katsuhiro Harada has been associated with Tekken, having been with the franchise from the very beginning. Now, Harada is set to take on a larger role in the company when it comes to their fighting games.

In a message to players of Dragon Ball FighterZSoulCalibur VI, and of course Tekken 7, Harada announced that he is now the leader and supervisor of Bandai Namco’s Fighting Game Esports Strategy team. As part of this, he confirmed that Bandai Namco is committed to helping expand the competitive scenes for these games, confirming that they are planning to have as many official tournaments for them as possible. This is on top of figuring out ways to continue to assist tournaments and community events in the future.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that he’ll stop being a producer: Harada stated that he will continue to be one on top of this new role moving forward.

Toei Animation states that they have nothing to do with blocking Dragon Ball FighterZ tournaments

For fans of Dragon Ball FighterZ, the past week or so has been dominated by talk regarding the game not appearing in a number of upcoming tournaments. The popular theory is that this is because Toei Animation, the studio behind the Dragon Ball anime franchise, is blocking these tournaments.

Replying to a tweet from a fan, Toei Animation has responded to this speculation by stating that they aren’t the cause for these tournaments not hosting Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Of course, with this clarification, the question still remains of why Dragon Ball FighterZ isn’t at these tournaments. The possible explanation could lie in the fact Toei Animation is simply just one of the entities involved with the franchise, other companies are also involved in other various aspects of the franchise. Noted fighting game commentator and attorney David “UltraDavid” Graham has pointed out it could be an issue from one of these other holders.

Novril looks at how Blade Strangers does one-button specials right this latest EFG Extra episode

Blade Strangers was one of the smaller of this year’s smaller fighting game releases. Now, while it may not initially stand out against the bigger games released this year, it is one of the few that continued to experiment with the one-button special moves that a few others have toyed with in the past couple years or so. In a their latest episode of EFG Extra, Novril takes a look at Blade Strangers‘ implementation of one-button special moves and explains why the game does it right.

Developed by Studio Saizensen, Blade Strangers differentiates itself from games like Fantasy Strike in that it strives to be a regular modern 2D fighting game, just with simpler control scheme. The result is a game that has a surprising depth of options that gets really engaging as players get better.

Street Fighter Carnival 12 continues with Fatal Fury Special, Blade Smash VODs

Street Fighter Carnival 12 is a multi-tournament series for world famous Japanese arcade Mikado. While the large focus of Mikado’s events are on preserving the hype of legacy titles through top tier skill, there is one consistent rule for a Mikado Event — be prepared for any game to show up, arcade title or otherwise.

So while the latest Fatal Fury Special tournament was no surprise on Mikado’s event list…

Blade Smash, a new mobile platform fighter that features SNK’s Nakoruru as a guest character, likely caught a few off guard. Audience and Player alike.

You can follow the action of SFC12 by subscribing to Mikado’s official YouTube channel. For the night owls in the US, you can even try to catch them when they livestream.

Maximilian speculates on how Street Fighter V’s 4th season will be different, and whether it’s “winding down”

The 4th Season of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition seems to be heading into a new direction. This season is the first time that the game won’t have a season pass for its upcoming characters; that fact, alongside Capcom-Unity’s Andy Wong stating that “We’re doing things differently this year,” during the Kage announcement post indicates that Capcom has a new approach in mind for their DLC coming into 2019.

The questions that this raises of course are “how” and “why”. It’s these questions that Maximilian tackles in this new video. As part of this, he comments on how it feels like things are “winding down” for Street Fighter V. That said, he does also offer other insights and speculations how Capcom could be doing things differently next year.
