Zero Dimension looks to provide a classic-style versus fighter with in-development indie “Cerebrawl”

Is an “Imagination Bomb” about to be dropped on the fighting game market?

Indie developer Zero Dimension seeks to take players back to the good ol’ days of hand-drawn sprites and 2D fighting action with their in-development project Cerebrawl. Inspired by classic Street Fighter and the Marvel Vs. games, it’s a potentially fresh look at what was great about old school fighting games. It’s currently in a crowdfunding stage, with the target being Steam Early Access.

From Cerebrawl‘s Kickstarter campaign page:

Cerebrawl is a fully hand-animated, 2v2 4-player tag-team fighting game. As a team, you and your partner can use several assist options available to maximize your damage. Cerebrawl is inspired by games such as the Marvel vs. Capcom series and their robust tag-team systems, but focuses on breaking each character out to a respective player. While it takes many notes from the VS series of games, it has become a beast of its own during its time in development. Cerebrawl is built on the idea that players not only need to know their character and the depth of their moveset, but also how players can best work together as a team to defeat their opponents.

The game’s core features revolve around competitive play with future features including 1v1 and 1v2 modes, a full button check system built into the character select, and tournament mode with a fully automated bracket system… we are also excited to add stage breaks into the game, a system where players can break down parts of the stage to either extend or narrow the size of the play space and change the meta on the fly.

On the story and setting:

Harmon City was a typical modern metropolis. But when an Imagination Bomb is detonated at the center of the city, Harmon City and its inhabitants are changed forever.

As the blast engulfs the region, the minds of the people start spilling into the reality. Reality can’t hold all the different thoughts and possibilities, and when the content of everyone’s psyche start to collide, each individual is thrust into their own dimension. In these pocket dimensions, each citizen of Harmon City grow new worlds based on their ideals and desires.

As fast as these worlds start to form, the pocket dimensions begin to re-collapse into reality. The many dimension-worlds start spiraling back into the place from which they came, but Harmon City has only limited space. The people who were merely residents of the city now have a chance to form their environment, but to do so they need to fight for real estate, as their dimension-worlds will need space to take root in the newly forming Harmon City.

Aside from it’s classic 2D aesthetic, one of the biggest draws to the game is the hip-hop inspired soundtrack — very reminiscent of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike — to be provided by 2 Mello, featuring Mega Ran, K Murdock, Open Mike Eagle, and Time Machine.

The future of Cerebrawl may be a bit uncertain, however, as it only has a few days left in its “all-or-nothing” crowdfunding campaign, and has reached less than 10% of its funding goal. You can check out design concepts, character descriptions, preview videos, and download a demo on Cerebrawl‘s Kickstarter page.

History Behind The Warrior explores the origins of Taki and Voldo throughout the SoulCalibur franchise

Continuing his look into the character lore of those whose fate is decided upon the Stage of History, History Behind The Warrior recently took a look at two of the Soul franchises most beloved and iconic characters, Taki and Voldo.

Similarly to his previous videos on Nightmare, Mitsurugi, Ivy Valentine, Sophitia Alexandra, Xianghua, Kilik, Setsuka, Talim, Siegfried, Yoshimitsu and Zasalamel, HBTW examines the lore of each fighter throughout every single title that they’ve appeared in up to this point. If you’ve ever been interested in Taki’s sorrowful upbringing and time serving under Ninja Master Toki in the Fu-Ma clan, along with Voldo’s time with the “Merchant of Death” Vercci, look no further.

To round out theses videos, HBTW offers up his personal list of five characters that he believes will appear in the upcoming SoulCalibur VI.

SoulCalibur VI will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC sometime in 2018.

VODs of Mikado Arcade’s 9th Marvel Super Heroes tournament are now available

Four months ago, we covered Amazing Gamer‘s Marvel Super Heroes tournament at the world famous FGC hot-spot, Mikado Arcade. MSH ran its event side by side with Mikado’s popular Super Street Fighter Carnival 2017 tournament then, and it’s to its credit that it stood out on its own amid the chaos of one of Mikado’s biggest draws.

Not a lot has changed between that event and now: Amazing Gamers can still put on a stand out tournament for the classic Marvel fighter regardless of what’s happening around it. (In this case, it’s Mikado’s currently on-going Street Fighter Carnival X series). Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite came and went in between these events, and Mikado’s MSH tournament still remains.

For those unfamiliar with MSH, a large part of the mental game (and mechanics) are built around its Infinity Gem system. This system allows players to enjoy new mechanics and buffs, which you can read further about at the SRK Wiki.

There’s a lot of history and hype around the MSH tournaments at Mikado Arcade. If you want to know more about the history of this MSH tournament, be sure to read our on-site reporting from  previous Marvel tournaments!

Koushun chronicles the intricacies of input priority in Sailor Moon S

The deeper you go into the Sailor Moon S tech, you’ll discover a crazy system with a lot of fine intricacies to be aware of, including a potential reason for what could have been deemed dropped inputs.

In Sailor Moon S, forward and crouching inputs take precedence over attack inputs, meaning that a forward, back, or crouching input that is not held down while hitting a button input can actually eat your attack inputs. But if you look further, we see some interesting options selects, as throws take precedence over specials. You can thus use specials as a buffer for throws, and if you are in range, you will get the throw as opposed to the special.

In these videos compiled by Sailor Moon S player Koushun, you can see how this input priority system comes together. As well as the aforementioned quirks, Koushun also goes over ways to work around the lack of an input buffer at the start of rounds.

J King breaks down the many possibilities of King’s “Lay Off” shove in Tekken 7

King’s “Lay Off” shove, (ff,n1+2) is one of his more complex and unusual attacks in Tekken 7. In addition to its slightly odd input, the attack itself does no damage. It does, however, offer considerable frame advantage on block and hit. That alone isn’t enough to warrant a dissertation on the move…

…but its counter properties opens up a whole new level to King’s gameplay. At a staggering +18 frames, King can get a number of guaranteed followups depending upon the situation and opponent. This excellent video from J King breaks down those options, classifying them based on reward, ease of use, and the characters each followup works on.

Gematsu details BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle’s Episode, Tactics, and other modes

As we inch ever-closer to the inevitable collision of four universes in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Gematsu has recently detailed a variety of the title’s game modes in a recent report.

The game will include the previously-announced Episode Mode, which will feature four individual arcs from the varying perspectives of the BlazBlue, Persona 4 Arena, Under Night In-Birth and RWBY casts. According to Gematsu, “In Episode Mode, players can enjoy an original story where battles unfold on the ‘Phantom Field,’ a singular point where the worlds of the four works represented in the game come together.”

Tactics Mode appears to be the traditional tutorial and combo challenge mode that players of any Arc System Works title have come to expect, with the duo of Azrael and Ragna appearing to serve as the training dummies. Survival Mode will allow players to pit their duo of choice against a variety of opposing CPU-controlled teams, with the standard fighting game fare of Training and Gallery Modes, as well as a Replay Theater, round out the currently-announced feature set. No further details were given about the game’s online functionality, and Arcade Mode seems conspicuous by its absence, at least for the time being.

You can see photos of each of the revealed modes below, as well as Cross Character Pack 1 DLC characters Platinum the Trinity, Orie Bellardire, and Kanji Tatsumi. It also includes our first look at Yang Xaio Long’s in-game sprite, as White Rose and Bumblebee share a pre-match intro at the Abandoned Temple. We can also see that Rachel has retained her Sylpheed gauge, which she lacked in her reveal trailer, while Platinum appears to have a new gauge governing items that is different than what she’s had in the past. A form of in-game currency, likely used for Gallery unlockables, also appears to be present.

Learn how to do more than hopkicks in this full breakdown of Tekken 7’s Claudio Serafino

Osserva!

Believe it or not, there’s more to Tekken 7‘s Claudio Serafino then a ridiculously easy-to-apply hopkick. There’s at least an hour’s worth of nuance to the character, in fact — if the latest master-class study from That Blasted Salami is any indication.

That isn’t to say that the game’s best hopkick isn’t a great place to start with the Italian exorcist, but Claudio’s (admittedly smaller) moveset has a lot of possibilities in battle. This is particularly true once you start getting into the meat of his “Starburst” mechanic, which the character is built around.

Pasadena Regionals returns this Summer, adding two more titles to the event roster

Southern California is one of the hotbeds of competitive fighting game action in the US West Coast, with numerous tournaments taking place in the region. For any fighting game players who are thinking of passing by the region this July on the way to Evo, here’s one event you might want to check out.

Pasadena Regionals returns this year on July 28 to 29 — the weekend before Evo 2018. While last year’s event was solely focused on Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, this year’s version has grown bigger and will now feature both Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and Dragon Ball FighterZ in addition to UMvC3.

For those interested in attending (or even just watching), Pasadena Regionals 2018 will take place at 3887 E Sierra Madre Blvd. in Pasadena, CA. Registration for the event is now open over at smash.gg.

Get ready for “perfected” Ultra Instinct! Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 releases launch trailer for Extra Pack 2

Witness Ultra Instinct Goku before his final showdown!

Bandai Namco has finally given players a trailer and release date for the last known expansion, Extra Pack 2, for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. The trailer focuses on the upcoming characters, Goku (Ultra Instinct), Jiren, Android 17 (Dragon Ball Super), and Fu, and the Extra Scenario: Infinite History. Each character’s unique skills make them valuable additions to the roster.

Infinite History may be the most exciting addition to the long-supported title yet. During the new story, players join forces with their mentor and battle throughout history — but this time, it may never be the same. Unlike the previous story mode where history was meant to be preserved, anything goes!

The full extent of how much history can be changed has yet to be announced, but if its anything like the end of Xenoverse 2, players are in for some very interesting “What if?” scenarios. A few of the showcased events include Jiren teaming up with Goku Black and Zamasu and the long-awaited reunion of Tapion and Future Trunks. The upcoming DLC also includes an additional 5 Parallel Quests, 8 skills, 8 Super Souls and even more costumes!

There’s also a ton of free content coming to the game as well! Custom Saiyan characters will be able to unlock the power of Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Super Saiyan Blue), all custom characters will have access to the “Overlimit” skill, and Android 18 and Videl will be getting swimsuits! All of this content will release next week on February 28 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC!

Don’t forget about the upcoming Dragon Ball FighterZ DLC either! Players who own both games will get access to the Android 21 outfit for custom characters. The release date for this content has yet to be announced.

The release of Extra Pack 2 may signal the end of the bulk of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 content. Whether or not the title continues to receive DLC in the future, there is more than a wealth of things to experience; Bandai Namco has made a perfect example of post-release support.
