One of the things that the impending PC release of Fighting EX Layer brings is the ability to play the game in 4K. Now, less than a day away from its release, ARIKA has shared some 4K screenshots of their game.
The Facebook gallery below features 20 screenshots of the PC version of the game running at 4K resolution. Additionally, at least one of the screenshots are displaying Arabic text; this is one of the languages that’s being added in the upcoming patch for all versions the game.
Fighting EX Layer arrives on PC on November 30, 2018.
SoulCalibur VI is getting a second guest character, in the form of 2B from NieR: Automata. As part of this, it seems that Yoko Taro, the creator of the latter game, had some trouble creating names for her various moves for the game.
In the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation, Yoko Taro mentions that coming up with names for 2B’s attacks in SoulCalibur VI ended up being “more trouble than expected”. This is because they wanted names that felt right for the game. As such, they actually had to come up with a ruleset for creating these names.
Speaking of names, the interview also goes over the nickname of 2B’s alternate color: “2P”. When asked what the P means, Taro eventually throws out “Panasonic” (in reference to the electronics company). While seemingly a joke, Taro later concludes that the P does stand for that. “It’s fine, I mean they’re world-famous,” he states. “So that decides it, 2P’s P stands for Panasonic.” Additionally, he mentions how “Panasonic” means “every sound”, and that the word fits the theme of the ending theme from NieR.

While Hilda has been in Under Night In-Birth since the very beginning, she has a few tools that have been left uncovered in the West. Toronto UNIST player Telethon has discovered this, and created a couple of videos on the incredible zoning character.
First he discusses various tactics — some of which can force restands on tech, while others can lynchpin, creating insane mixup potential.
But for the people who struggle to deal with the characters incredible range, Telethon also offered up a video on how to not only counter her tools, but punish each and every problematic button she has.

Obviously recognizing the sheer ridiculousness of the SoulCalibur universe — the spandex demon-slaying ninja, the whip-sword dominatrix, Yoshimitsu’s antics, to name a few — the sixth game does make some attempt to at least organize the timeline in a digestible format. Now that we see actual dates from the story to follow the events, as well as years of background history for each warrior, YouTuber and video game documentarian Super Bunnyhop took a detailed look. Take a seat, because this lesson on the Stage of History is long, detailed, and educational.
It’s not without a sense of humor, though! He walks us through the general historical background and Bandai Namco’s positive spin on the “Age of Discovery” which was also full of bloodshed and religious warfare. The grim, medieval reality doesn’t exactly line up with the colorful video game, but Super Bunnyhop dissects where the creators drew inspiration to craft their vision. For instance, remember the weapon demonstrations made for every character in the past games? There’s a historical, martial-arts background for that.
At about the eight minute mark, he gets into the Japanese characters, Yoshimitsu, Taki, and Mitsurugi. He sheds light on how Sophitia’s background could have been much more accurate if she was from Sparta as opposed to Athens. After them, the video switches focus to Voldo, Siegfried, and Cervantes.
It may be a bit lengthy, but personally, I’m a fan of Super Bunnyhop’s analytical video game essays. Check it out below:
Few people could contain their hype in seeing their favorite fighting schoolgirl — Sakura — joining the lineup of Street Fighter V in Season 3. But their hype was short-lived as they saw the character’s weak buttons, slow specials, and inability to get in and create pressure plummet Sakura into the lower tiers.
VesperArcade decided to lay out all the things wrong with the character, and how to fix it in his most recent video. In it, him and SonicSol say that short of a complete overhaul on some of her normals — among other buffs to her specials — she will remain the incomplete character she currently is.
Palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. You’re not losing yourself in the music; you’re trying to not lose outright in the tournament. Tournament nerves are a real thing, and even the best in the world face it.
Echo Fox|Justin Wong has tackled that problem head-on, as he discussed with players at Red Bull Conquest — including Sanford Kelly, Chris G, LPN, and more — about how what pre-game rituals they have that help them to combat tournament nerves. Some of the answers range from interesting (such as always eating the same thing for breakfast) to zany (such as pre-tournament bathroom rituals).
Platform fighters, such as the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, have the distinction from other fighting genres of allowing combat beyond the traditional 1-on-1 format. However, hosting tournaments for these hasn’t always been easy. Now, Challonge has announced a new format that can enable these tournaments.
The new “Free For All” format from Challonge was ostensibly designed to work with Battle Royale-type games such as Fortnite. However, the format also works with platform fighters’ last-man-standing modes, something that isn’t lost on Challonge. Challonge CEO Matt McIntyre has stated that, “We currently working with several Super Smash Brothers Ultimate tournament organizers to add formal competitions around the four player and eight player last-character-standing modes.”
Whether or not we’ll see these kinds of competitions become more common with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — and other platform fighters — is something that remains to be seen.
