Let’s dance: Learn to fight against Eddy Gordo in Tekken 7 with this handy guide from Tekken Tips

Whether you’re a casual or competitive Tekken player, learning to fight effectively against Eddy Gordo can be a real pain. The moves associated with his capoeira fighting style have been called cheap, overpowered, and even dirty — but the reality is, Eddy has gone through the balancing process just like every other Tekken character.

Here to prove this point is Tekken Tips, having created a quick guide that outlines the confusing kick master’s strengths and weaknesses in Tekken 7. While the advantages of playing Eddy — like his quick backdash and deceptive, long-range kicks — may sound all-too-familiar, some of his disadvantages, like his weak sidesteps and his susceptibility to pressure, may be new information to some.

Check out Tekken Tips’ Versus Eddy Gordo guide below, and see if it’ll help you throw off a capo main for a change.

ChromeAlchemist breaks down how Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite handles chip damage

If you’ve watched any high-level Marvel, you’ll be used to seeing a screen filled with projectiles. With players having to deal with Soul Fists, Hidden Missiles and Drones galore, chip damage is quite the threat when you’re stuck in the corner and down to your last character. Well, it seems that Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is attempting to lessen the threat of chip damage with its new scaling system.

Thanks to some in-depth investigation from UK Marvelhead ChromeAlchemist, MvC:I has defending players taking less and less chip damage over time. It looks similar to the “move staling” mechanics in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U at first glance, with moves do less damage if they are used repeatedly. ChromeAlchemist demonstrates this with Hawkeye’s Triple Arrow, with the move doing almost zero chip damage after eight back-to-back uses.

ChromeAlchemist posits two theories as to what is happening here:

  1. MvC:I uses a stale move system like Smash 4, where moves gradually weaken if they are used repeatedly.
  2. Blocking several projectiles in quick succession will lessen general chip damage for a period.

The most likely theory is option two, as projectiles return to their full strength a little while after the opponent stops taking chip damage. So, if your opponent is successfully blocking your hail of Soul Fists, stop and let the damage scaling wear off before continuing your projectile assault.

Maximilian talks about the female Monster Hunter, beginner league, and other new Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite info

Fresh of showing off some new gameplay of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite from the Gamescom build of the game, Maximilian has posted another video. This time, he talks about all the game’s final launch roster, and some of the new online modes that were shown to him when he visited Capcom HQ.

The big news, however, is that a female monster hunter was spotted in the game’s story mode. Now for those who have been following the news around the game, a Monster Hunter character — based on the player character from the games — was one of the characters listed in one of the many leaks regarding the games roster. The female Monster Hunter herself is seen wearing Rathalos Armor as an NPC, and may be an indication that she will be one of the game’s DLC characters.

In addition to this, Max talks about the other modes, including those already confirmed by Capcom: arcade mode, training mode, and the mission mode. More importantly, Max goes over some of what he knows about the online mode. While he misses some points (we already know that the game uses GGPO-style rollback netcode), he does go over how the game has features that the original Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was missing at launch. One of these is the new beginner league for players up to “rank 14,” — Max discusses the implications and benefits of this in the video below.

Knock out the competition with new Naoto combos in BlazBlue: Central Fiction

Naoto, a brand new character to BlazBlue: Central Fiction, saw some usage in the casual and competitive scene — but maybe not as much as some of us would like. Since the BlazBlue 2.0 patch shook things up, certain characters received not only the buffs they needed, but also the tuning to their tools to open up entirely new combo paths. Naoto seems to be one of those characters.

There’s a multitude of Naoto adjustments: longer active frames on certain moves, bigger hurtboxes, several new gatlings, etc. His new combos give him opportunities to change direction with Phantom Pain. The video from Kamikaze below is an excellent primer of strong confirms that have a lot of hits and high damage. There are some really good examples from anti-air starters and counter hits.

Absolver drops “Friends & Foes” trailer, launches next week for PlayStation 4 on August 29th

Devolver Digital’s surprising step into the world of online brawlers, Absolver, is just around the corner. One week ahead of its release, the publisher that brought us indie hits like Hotline Miami, Enter the Gungeon, and Downwell has showed off their latest — and likely last — pre-release trailer for Absolver:

Absolver also had a presence at Evolution 2017, showing that they are at least aware of the of the FGC’s viewpoint. With gameplay being at forefront, developer Sloclap seems to have an eye on tournaments once people get their hands on the brawler. At least, that’s the impression one could get from the massive FAQ they wrote on Steam.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite story, collection, and mission mode impressions from Game Informer

While we’ve been focusing a lot on Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite’s gameplay and its roster, not much has really been said yet about the single-player modes coming with the game — aside from the initial Story Demo. Now we already know that the game is coming with story, mission, and arcade modes (the last of which Capcom’s other game, Street Fighter V, still doesn’t have), as well as gallery mode called the Dr. Light Database. Thankfully, Game Informer recently got a chance to try the game and these single-player modes out.

We’ve already seen a bit of story mode with the game’s Story Demo, and it seems that, based on Game Informer’s impressions, we’ll see even more varied types of matches with NPC mooks and drones. One such match featured the same weak drones from the Story Demo, but with a timer that counted down to when these drones would fly off to attack Valkanda, with the city eventually being destroyed if the player didn’t stop them in time.

Additionally, the story mode features a lot of other NPCs, including some who may become playable characters down the line — such as the female Monster Hunter that Maximilian mentioned in a previous video. [A little more on that later. – Editor]

Mission mode, on the other hand, is a collection of ten trials for each character. Now while the first set of missions simply serve as a tutorial for the character, the latter seem to be designed to help players wrap their heads around the new systems. For some of these, characters are given a set partner that the player is tasked with switching to mid-combo. Meanwhile, other missions involve using a specific Infinity Stone’s Infinity Surge or Infinity Storm as part of the combo.

Finally the Dr. Light Database is, as one would expect, a collection of unlockable character art, character data, cutscenes, and even voice samples.

Of course, the actual article has a bit more, including some bits in of the story mode that some may count as spoilers. Head on over to Game Informer to read the complete article.

BoxeR-King explains how to condition opponents into command grabs with Tekken 7’s King

King players want to land big grabs in Tekken 7. You know it, I know it, and BoxeR-King knows it. One of the toughest things for a new Luchador player to do, however, is to set up the opponent properly for a command grab. In a game with dominate movement options and lower level players tendency to rely on panic buttons, the new King player can wonder if they’ll ever land any of his signature grabs.

Boxer-King’s tutorial focuses less on technique and more of psychology: by monitoring what your opponents reactions are to various pokes, you can get information on setting up grabs. While this is true for any character, it’s particularly important for King, whom has arguably the strongest grab game in Tekken 7.

PND Mustard explores and explains Captain Cold’s “death reset” in Injustice 2

A couple of days ago, we reported on a “pseudo-infinte” found in Injustice 2. A Twitter video showed Echo|SonicFox experimenting with a deadly Captain Cold reset that looked almost too good to be true. Shortly after it was discovered and had made its rounds in the Injustice 2 Twittersphere, Active NetherRealm community member Mustard — one half of of team PNDK&M — decided to explore this “death reset” himself and explain it for the inquisitive Injustice 2 player.  The results are captured in the following video.

As SonicFox pointed out in one of his original tweets, Mustard also explains that you can escape the reset by backdashing or jumping, but you will not come out completely unscathed. Also, Mustard takes note at the generous meter gain that Captain Cold gets upon completing the full reset, a benefit that just makes it seem even more ridiculously advantageous.

Usually this kind of stuff will have FGC heads reaching for the “nerf” gun, but this reset is actually a result of Injustice 2‘s latest balance patch. Perhaps it is something players will simple have to adjust to, or maybe Captain Cold just needs to chill.

Red Meatys: Check out NurseLee’s sweep setups for Zangief in Street Fighter V

YouTuber NurseLee is the man with the plan when it comes to finding setups in Street Fighter V. This time, he’s digging up tech for Zangief and providing you with a list of meaty setups to help improve your Russian grappler game.

Since it’s important to keep your enemy as close as possible, capitalizing off of knockdowns is especially crucial when playing as the Red Cyclone. Zangief’s sweep, V-Trigger and Double Lariat are three of his most commonly used moves that happen to get the opponent off of their feet, and NurseLee in experiments with all three of these in his quest for red meatys.

Regarding the sweep specifically, he notices that a Crush Counter sweep and a sweep on hit have the same timing, assuming the opponent does not choose to do a quick recovery. Check it out below as NurseLee demonstrates this observation and more. If you’re looking for tech but Zangief’s not your man, check out more of NurseLee’s videos here.
