Infiltration, Eita, and Momochi Give Their Assessment of the FGC Skill Gap

Last week, we reported on an interview between Razer|Infiltration, GW|Eita, and EG|Momochi regarding what they would change about Capcom Pro Tour’s structure. But that was apparently not all they talked about.

With all the stunning upsets at Capcom Cup that culminated in the rise of the United States on the Street Fighter map, it was even more necessary for them to discuss the changing climate of the tournament scene. As such, the three also discussed how much the perceived skill gap between the USA and Japan has changed over the course of this year.

Team Allegiance Steps into the World of Super Smash Bros. Melee by Signing Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby

Known for their presence in console esports like Halo, Gears of War and Call of Duty, Allegiance joins the growing number of esports teams who are entering the world of Super Smash Bros. by signing notable Captain Falcon main, Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby. This signing comes off the back of n0ne’s continued growth as a player throughout the whole of 2016, racking up wins against Druggedfox, VwS|Professor Pro, CLG|PewPewU, fellow Captain Falcon Tempo|S2J, DNL|Duck and most famously, FOX|Mew2King at Get On My Level 2016 and UGC Smash Open.

The initial victory over Mew2King made n0ne the first Falcon to take a set off M2K in over a decade, really catapulting n0ne into the spotlight. His “no fear” approach to matches, his amazing conversions off of single hits and his ice cold demeanor make n0ne an absolute joy to watch when he gets going.

Allegiance are partnering up with n0ne’s previous sponsor, Even Matchup Gaming, in order to provide him with the right resources to grow as a player in 2017, as well as to branch out into Smash with the knowledge of a well-renowned organization.

Learn to Be a Psycho Soldier with This Athena Beginner Breakdown for The King of Fighters XIV

Since her first appearance in The King of Fighters ’94, Athena Asamiya has been a popular pick among fans of The King of Fighters series. Her appearance in The King of Fighters XIV is sure to bring some returning players who are drawn to her character design and flashy playstyle.

This Athena guide for beginners walks you through the ins and outs of her normal and special attacks, covering their range, practicality and frame data. Along with a decent set of normals, Athena’s special moves serve to both increase her mobility and improve her defensive power. But to be most effective, moves like her Psycho Reflector, Super Psychic Throw and Psychic Teleport have to be properly timed and spaced. This topic and more are covered in Ra3bones‘ video.

Aquaplus Crossover Costumes Coming to Dead or Alive 5 Last Round

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round is no stranger to having crossovers from other franchises when it comes to its downloadable content. This latest batch of costumes shows that this isn’t going to change anytime soon.

Team NINJA has partnered with visual novel company Aquaplus to release a line of DLC costumes based on characters from their franchises. These visual novel franchises include Comic Party, White Album, Utawarerumono, To Heart, Tears to Tiara, Dungeon Travelers, and more.

Interestingly enough, Aquaplus already has its own fighting game, 2011’s Aquapazza, making this yet another fighting game crossover added to Dead or Alive 5.

Setplay While You Set Swords with Ramlethal with Advanced Setups in Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-

For Ramlethal to be successful, she often needs to be one step ahead of her opponent. Having limited defense options and some lackluster normals means she needs to be ready for the opponent’s attempts to escape her pressure. Below is a collection of ideas to expand that repertoire.

A burst-safe airdash string off command grab. Rather than instant air dash j.KSD, using j.KPSD allows for an easy burst bait:

If your opponent is anti-airing your jumping sword sets, come down with a blitz shield. Kakkou illustrates here that when successful, using command grab essentially sets up her unblockable. They either blitz and get grabbed, or they don’t and the sword launches them:

A simple way to beat high blitz after a corner combo:

If you time a meaty 6K just late enough, it will allow you to still block slower reversals. For instance, Sin & Jacko’s DP:

Using FD to cancel your run makes you slide, effectively giving you more command grab range. This is a relevant option for any character whether you’re using normal throw or a command grab:

Midscreen safejump on Leo:

Punishing Bedman’s bedslam optimally requires jumping into it and instant blocking. Daiji takes the optimization to new levels here:

Stun combo setup versus I-no:

If you’re doing dash up 2k against Axl, this shows it can be useful to input 1k with down-back instead. It will option select his crossup move, with her slide counter hitting for a full combo. Highly situational, but good to know for when it happens:

Instant air dash loop on Potemkin, reminiscent of Jam’s IAD loops in older iterations of the game:

Awesome setplay concept using a tech trap to air throw reset while covered by a swinging sword:

Super Street Fighter Carnival 2016 Enters Its Last Week with JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Virtua Fighter 3: Team Battle Tournaments

It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that Super Street Fighter Carnival 2016, Mikado’s 2-month long tournament gauntlet through a wide variety of arcade fighters, has entered it’s last week. We’ve been covering the games since the beginning and if you’ve wanted to get in on anything you’ve missed, there’s plenty to catch up on!

Now is not the time for tears, though. We should look towards the future.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Heritage For The Future is Capcom’s wild attempt at interpreting one of Japan’s longest running manga into a fighting game. Not an easy task, given that it’s source material is largely full of endless monologues, posing, and puzzle bosses. While it’s Capcom’s only attempt at a JoJo game, JJBA:HftF is a cult classic thanks to its gorgeous sprite work and interesting system mechanics. The fact there’s menacing competition at Mikado for this game is probably no surprise.

Virtua Fighter 3: Team Battle wasn’t nearly the success in America that it was in Japan. It took forever to come out to consoles and, when it did, it was for the dwindling Dreamcast. And that’s a shame, because as this video shows, VF3 has a ton of depth and excitement. This ambitious entry fully embraced its 3D core and defined many of the mechanics that VF4 and 5 would become known for.

As always, you can follow along Mikado’s upload schedule on YouTube, or try to catch them live on their UStream.

Armada Given a Percentage of Alliance as the Team Gains Independence from Twitch

One of the biggest bits of recent news in esports is the fact that Alliance, alongside Evil Geniuses, recently became independent from Twitch. The latter spun off both teams, pointing out that owning a stake in them represented a conflict of interest.

The interesting bit of news however comes from Alliance: Jonathan “Loda” Berg, one of the team’s founders, has announced that Super Smash Bros. Melee player Adam “Armada” Lindgren would be one of the players who would be given a percentage of the team. Specifically, Armada is the only player outside of the original members of Alliance who would be given a percentage.

This is an interesting development, as this makes Armada possibly the only Super Smash Bros. player who owns a stake in his esports team. Whether this means that the team will increase its involvement in competitive Smash is as of yet unknown.

Both Alliance and Evil Geniuses became part of Twitch back in 2014 as part of their acquisition of Good Game Agency. The latter has now mostly been folded into Twitch’s partnerships division.

Ex-SNK Developers Are Working on a New Fighting Game–for the Super Famicom

At the recent Hong Kong Retro Game Expo ’16, an interesting new fighting game was on display. Called Unholy Night, the game was developed by former SNK staff who previously worked on games such as Kizuna Encounter, The King of Fighters ’98, The King of Fighters 2001, and The King of Fighters 2002. While this may sound somewhat intriguing already, the really interesting thing is that Unholy Night is being developed for the Super Famicom.

Now for those who may not know or recall, the Super Famicom was the Japanese version of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. With the system being the first to see a home port of Street Fighter II, the SNES was arguably the first console where many players got to experience fighting games at home.

Now, Unholy Night isn’t the first example of a new game being developed on an older “dead” console. Many hobbyists and retro gaming enthusiasts do go out of their way to create games on these older consoles. Additionally, Hong Kong based console peripheral company Blazepro also seems to have some involvement in Unholy Night.

As for Unholy Night itself, the game features 6 playable characters and 3 attack buttons mapped to B, A, and X. Meanwhile the Y, L and R buttons are tied to a mystery feature (the movecard labels it with a “?”). The game itself is set to release in February of 2016 using a 32 MB cartridge.

In the meantime, check out these photos of the game at the event from Richard Wan.
