Rising Up: Laura Character Tutorial — Optimal Combos, Setups, & Frame Traps

Here’s the latest Rising Up full-character tutorial hosted on ShoryukenTube: Laura Matsuda. This video contains all of her bread and butter punishes and confirms, counter-hit setups and damage optimization, fireball answers, frame traps listed by delay, meaty pressure, setups, and more. If you want to learn Laura, everything you need to know should be right here.

My own Street Fighter V bread and butter combo videos are by far my most popular YouTube videos. However, the vast majority of them were made during the third SFV public beta test. While almost no serious balance changes were made between that beta and release, certain damage values were incorrect and the players have had a lot of time to develop. The initial videos were made based on my own training mode findings and nothing else, and were fully featured around combos. I asked around, and have decided to flesh them into full character guides, now including a basic game plan I’ve summarized from watching a lot of pro matches. This is the full scope of my observations on Laura. As usual, I’ve included an enormous guide in the video description. This video is intended as a supplement to that guide, so make sure to check it out.

I’ll be aiming to launch a new character tutorial every Monday, until all 22 characters are covered. I intend to do the characters in order of most to least popular; next is R. Mika. Remember to subscribe to the Shoryuken channel, and keep an eye out for future videos!

Create Some Weird Edge Situations with the Rapid Jab Edge Slip in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, certain characters like Little Mac and Sheik have jabs which causes them to let fly with a flurry of hits, before eventually being pushed away from the opponent. The push can cause a player to slide off the stage, if they are standing right at the ledge while rapid jabbing. As such, this edge slip can lead into some weird off-stage interactions, as the falling character suffers no lag when being pushed off the edge, meaning they can instantly perform specific moves as soon as they slide off.

Experimenting with this slide, the Beefy Smash Doods have created a new guide, looking at the possible applications of this engine quirk. Certain characters can combo into certain moves and even guarantee a kill with this tech, like a Meta Knight cancelling into Shuttle Loop and KOing somebody off the top. If the character is facing out to the edge of the stage, you can only get this edge slip if you finish the jab sequence, as most characters with rapid jabs do a step forward when they finish flinging hits. Do note that you actually need to be hitting an opponent to get this variation of the edge slip, as it only occurs when your character enters hitlag during the jab sequence.

If the opponent doesn’t know about this version of the edge slip and doesn’t know to jump or air dodge away, it is possible to land certain follow ups like a Bouncing Fish from Sheik or even something like a Fox fair spike into footstool, which will guarantee a kill.

Increase Bayonetta’s Mix-Up Potential in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U with Frame Cancelled Specials

Infamous for her amazing aerial combo potential, Bayonetta does struggle with suffering through large amounts of landing lag whenever she returns back to Earth. For every additional special she uses in the air, Bayonetta gains a few extra frames of recovery upon landing, giving players who manage to escape one of her combos the perfect opportunity for a punish.

However, with some experimentation, Events2Compete’s Tyroy has discovered a way for Bayonetta to bypass all of that landing lag: by perfectly timing a special as soon as you land on the ground. According to Tyroy, he theorizes that this trick is similar to the Infinite Jump glitch in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, with the game thinking you are in a grounded state when you perform that frame-perfect special. This updates Bayonetta’s lag state so that she doesn’t go through the period of recovery that she should do upon landing after performing multiple specials in the air.

With this knowledge, Tyroy has come up with some realistic setups that Bayonetta mains could feasibly pull off in a match. It’s not going to net you instant kills, but it is a great way to mix up opponents who air dodge at the wrong time, or who don’t double jump away from a landing Bayonetta.
