Final Round 20 Adds Pot Bonus for Pokkén Tournament

Final Round founder Larry “shinblanka” Dixon took to Twitter today to announce something big for Final Round 20. Given that Final Round was the inaugural major for Pokkén Tournament last year, the tournament is celebrating the 1-year anniversary by including a $500 pot bonus on the game in 2017.

With Final Round 20 months away and the team involved always going big, we can only expect bigger and better announcements coming up for this event–that will be held March 10th through 12th in Atlanta.

Say Goodbye to Season One Chun-Li with This V-Trigger Combo Video for Street Fighter V

With Season Two fast approaching for Street Fighter V, a lot of the craziness from Season One will no doubt be patched out, as Capcom attempts to normalize some of the wackier elements of certain characters. While R. Mika is the character who seems to be receiving the most brutal changes, Chun-Li is another character that is no doubt in Capcom’s sights for rebalancing.

To catalogue the craziness that came from her Season One V-Trigger, Mothman has created his celebratory combo video which shows off some of the more ridiculous combos Chun-Li could pull off with her V-Trigger. Her Renkiko could remain untouched and many of these combos may still be possible come December 20th, but if not, this video will act as a reminder of the madness that could happen in Season One of Street Fighter V.

SonicFox Announces He is Moving on from Team Critical Reaction

Very few in our community have yet to hear about the exploits of Dominique ‘SonicFox’ Mclean. After blazing a trail through Mortal Kombat and becoming a phenomenon across multiple games through consecutive years, this young star etched his name into FGC history. Through most of his highest profile accomplishments, SonicFox has worn the Critical Reaction jersey and tag, but that will no longer be the case.

It’s hard to imagine the Fox without that almost iconic cR before his name. While he hasn’t announced any plans on moving to any other team, there are many teams out there that would be proud to add him to their roster. Time will tell where SonicFox ends up, and we almost certainly can look forward to seeing SonicFox gracing headlines again in the near future.

Stop Getting Hit By Ken’s Corner Tatsu V-Trigger Mixup in Street Fighter V

It’s quick, it’s ambiguous, and if you get hit by it you’ll be taking big damage. When Ken pops V-Trigger and lands a heavy dragon punch in the corner, you’ll often see them throw out a light tatsu while you are on the ground. This puts you in the situation of having to decide a direction to block in, and choosing wrong will be brutally punished.

We’ve seen players like Ryan Hart use this trick to good effect, but as it turns out, it’s not really a mixup after all. Check the video below for more information–no more getting hit!

Norio Hirose, Programmer on the Original Marvel Versus Series, Named Director on Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Capcom are really going back to the roots of the Versus Series with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, as it has been revealed that Norio Hirose will be the director on the latest entry in the series. Confirmed to be working on MvC:I in an interview with Japanese gaming website Game.Watch, Hirose is a veteran programmer from the early days of the Vs. Series, working on X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Street Fighter, the original Marvel vs. Capcom, as well as Project Justice and Capcom vs. SNK.

With Infinite attempting to be a reboot of the Marvel vs. Capcom formula by returning to its 2v2 roots, it makes sense to call in one of the programmers from those early games to head up the project. With the Infinity Stones also being said to be similar to the Groove system seen in Capcom vs. SNK, Hirose’s work on the original title in that franchise will also prove valuable in creating something equally as engaging in MvC:I.

The whole interview is worth a read if your Japanese is decent, as it discusses the reasoning behind some of the character choices for this original trailer, the thought that Marvel vs. Capcom 4 could have been a 4-on-4 fighter, as well as their plans on the outline of MvC:I’s cinematic story.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves is Finally on PS4–But How Is the Netplay?

It’s no stretch to say that Garou: Mark of the Wolves is one of SNK’s most beloved fighting games. It’s also one of the most commonly ported, making an appearance on consoles from the Dreamcast to the recent release on the PlayStation 4.

It’s been around for 17 years–so can you teach an old dog new tricks? Well, this edition comes with the ability to play others over the internet–but how usable is it? Find out with this video from MarginalSC. Bear in mind that this is a small set of samples, but it’s a good way to get an idea of how decent the netcode actually is.

CFN Portal Talks Street Fighter III Characters, How Yun and Yang Were Meant to Be Popular, Sean As a Handicap Pick

The Japanese CFN Portal recently put out an interesting new column. This column focuses on the designs of the newcomers added to the Street Fighter III series.

In the column, producer Tomoshi Sadamoto gives us some insights into why the characters ended up like they did. For example, boss character Gill’s color palette was chosen because they wanted a him to sport the primary colors: red and blue as represented by the halves of his body, and yellow represented by his blonde hair.

Meanwhile, it should come as no surprise that the twins, Yun and Yang, were designed to be popular with their flashy kung-fu move sets. As for Dudley, he was designed as a British boxer due to the concept of boxing as a “gentleman’s sport,” especially in Britain–or so the developers thought.

The most interesting entry, however, is that for Sean. According to Sadamoto, Sean was meant to be a character who good players could use to handicap themselves when fighting against friends who might not be as good as them. This could explain why Sean received the changes that he did in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. While both Sean and Ibuki were top tier in Street Fighter III: Second Impact, Sean’s changes were more drastic, including sweeping changes to his moveset.

For those interested in reading more about these, you can head on over to the Japanese CFN Portal. Take note that the column is in Japanese.

There’s a big update on the way for The King of Fighters XIV–but it’s a little different to what you might be used to. There’s no balance changes, in this patch at least: instead there are changes to the lighting and shaders for the game engine, giving all your favorite characters a very different look.

Version 1.10 isn’t available for us stuck at home, but it did make a little outing to the PlayStation Experience where YouTuber chocobotiger grabbed some footage of the game in action. Check it out below for a glimpse of what is in store.

Here’s Our First Glimpse at Akuma’s Street Fighter V Story Mode

Japanese gaming site GamerNE recently put up an article focusing on returning character Akuma; now while most of the details are the same things we already know from prior coverage, there are some new screenshots–including our first look at Akuma’s story mode.

The interesting thing about the shot isn’t just that it’s from Akuma’s story mode, rather it’s who’s in the shot with him. The screenshot shows none other than the aged Chinese assassin Gen. As anyone who’s followed Street Fighter’s overarching story will know, Gen has been been continually looking to fight Akuma for some time now, hoping for one final battle before he dies.

Will Gen finally get his wish in Akuma’s story mode? We’ll have to wait until Decemebr 20 to find out. In the meantime, check out the screenshot and other new images of Akuma in the gallery below.
