Tempo Storm Interviews Johnny “S2J” Kim About His History with the Super Smash Bros. Series

A man of few words, Tempo Storm’s Johnny “S2J” Kim is known for letting his explosive Captain Falcon play speak for him. Regarded as the best Falcon player in the world by many in the Super Smash Bros. Melee community, Tempo Storm decided it was time to for fans to hear more about their latest Melee signing, so they have released a special interview with S2J, so people can learn about his history with the franchise.

S2J actually started off playing Super Smash Bros. 64 competitively, learning the game via netplay and eventually going to SoCal tournaments while studying at UCLA. It was only after attending tournaments for both 64 and Melee, where he would meet among others, future best friends Dunk, C9|Mango and Selfless|Lucky who would start him on the path to playing Melee competitively.

HitBox Gravy Discusses the Legality of the Smash Box Controller at Genesis 4

Controllers have been a fairly touchy subject for much of the community, whether Smash or FGC. In the FGC people are mainly concerned with interruption of matches on wireless controllers, or unfair controller-specific macros; the Smash community is sort of the inverse, where there are so few controller methods that the thought of having to ban a control method is rarely brought up. That is, before the Smash Box.

Smash Box is a new control method for Smash games that borrows heavily from the Hit Box philosophy, laying out the inputs in a keyboard style with only buttons. Your typical GameCube controller is subject to a lot of variance in successfully inputting certain movement techs in Super Smash Bros. Melee, such as dash backs and shield drops. Players have resorted to modifying their controllers to install better analog sticks or include shield drop notches, as well as taking out the springs in triggers to increase input success rates and these are allowed in tournaments, as long as there are no button macros. Like these controller mods, the Smash Box does make techniques like shield dropping much easier, but it requires relearning potentially years of muscle memory to perform these movements on this specialist controller.

However, the Smash Box does this by remapping the buttons used to play Melee, which is something the game doesn’t natively allow you to do, unlike most modern fighting games and even later Smash games. As a result, the Smash Box does represent a potential precedent which opens the door for hundreds of new controller modifications, where players are remapping their D-Pads or other buttons to do inputs which Melee and the standard controller doesn’t allow you to do normally.

The main trade-off for the Smash Box is that it is leagues more comfortable for your hands compared to a controller, and that it is the first controller designed specifically for high-level Smash. When pros like FOX|Mew2King and C9|Mango complain about severe hand and wrist pain from using a GameCube controller, the Smash Box does potentially stop future players from developing chronic hand problems. Moreover, when Smash 64 TOs are letting players compete using computer keyboards, PlayStation, HORI, and Xbox controllers alongside the traditional N64 pad, there is also a precedent for new controllers with different button layouts to be allowed at tournaments.

However, due to the “massive change in muscle memory required to use it,” the Genesis 4 TOs have provisionally banned the Smash Box. As such, lead consultant on the Smash Box and notable Falcon main Gravy has come to the controller’s aid to argue why it should be legal at Genesis 4. Give the video below a watch and make sure to sound off on your thoughts about the controller’s legality.

DMG|Ryuga Makes Some Waves in This Corrin Montage for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

We’ve had a fair few montages from other members of DMG Alliance, now it’s time for one from the head honcho himself. Ranked third on Michigan’s Smash 4 Power Ranking and regarded as one of the best Corrins in the USA, DMG|Ryuga has come out of the shadows to release his own combo video, centered around the draconic fighter from Fire Emblem Fates.

Corrin is a character that thrives on punishing air dodges with Dragon Fang Shot and forward-smash, as well as killing offstage with a perfectly spaced Impale, so expect plenty of poor souls flying across the stage to their grim fate in this montage. As with most videos that DMG puts out, there is a smooth future funk backing track and some flashy edits to make those combos look extra cool.

Apparent Marvel vs. Capcom 4 In-Game Screenshot Confirmed Fake

The rumor mill leading up to the PlayStation Experience this weekend isn’t stopping when it comes to Capcom’s Marvel vs. Capcom 4: a new image appeared on 4chan boards and was posted on a NeoGAF thread, appearing at first glance to be a screenshot from the game.

mvc4fakeimage

Aligning with the previous rumors on Marvel vs. Capcom 4, the shot has two characters per team; Ant-Man and Gwenpool are facing off against Street Fighter V’s Rashid and Resident Evil’s Ada Wong. While it’s clear that the image looks a little dubious, this Twitter conversation reveals the source of the Ant-Man model, which is lifted from Marvel: Contest of Champions.

Marvel: Contest of Champions is a mobile game that included Ant-Man in an update.

marvel_champions_ant-man_3

Recently, the early-circulating logo images of Marvel vs. Capcom 4 also turned out to be fake. Maybe it’s time for fans to just make their own Marvel vs. Capcom 4–they seem to have started already. Stay tuned to SRK as the PlayStation Experience unfolds.
