Yomi Gaming’s Michaelangelo Shares His Early Hands-On Impressions of Injustice 2 at GameStop Expo, and His Future In Mortal Kombat X

San Jose, California’s own Michael “Michaelangelo” Lerma has been a strong competitor in the Mortal Kombat franchise since the series reboot was released in 2011. He’s had multiple top eight placings at various majors and has continued his consistency in Mortal Kombat X with his patented Quan Chi since last year under the Yomi Gaming brand after moving to and residing in Atlanta, Georgia for over a year or so. His most recent accomplishment was placing seventh out of over 700 players in MKX, which was no easy feat by any stretch.

Last Wednesday, the annual GameStop Expo took place at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA, and Lerma was privately invited to try out the latest build of Injustice 2 by WB Games and NetherRealm Studios in front of a crowd of over 5,000 GameStop employees, according to Lerma.

Unfortunately as I just mentioned, this was a private event so there was no stream or recorded footage of IJ2 being played. However, I held an email interview with Michael to get his initial impressions about IJ2 and his future as a competitive gamer in both the aforementioned game and MKX.

Marcos Blanco: First of all, it’s been a couple of months since you placed top eight at Evo 2016 for MKX for the first time. How did you feel about your placing and have you still been playing it seriously?

Michael Lerma: It was such a euphoric feeling standing on the Evo stage accepting a medal I had been dreaming of getting for a long time. I’m still training in MKX to prepare for SoCal Regionals 2016 and I expect to see many good friends and have a crazy time!

MB: IJ2 is on the horizon as NRS’ next big fighter. Do you feel it will replace MKX as your main fighting game of choice once it’s released? Did you play the first IJ seriously prior to MKX?

ML: I know the focus will shift to IJ2 because whenever a new fighting game comes out, that’s what people are paying attention to. I will still support MKX seeing as I’m a huge fan of the MK series. MkKis in my blood, literally! I have a tattoo of the damn game!

I did compete in the first IJ for a couple of months, but had to stop because life doesn’t always allow you to put the time that you would like into your passion.

MB: So you told me you were invited to GameStop Expo which took place last Wednesday to play the latest build of IJ2, along with some other well-known players. Can you describe the IJ2 event that went down, since there was no streamed footage of the event? Were there other players who got invited?

ML: Yes. I was personally invited by the good people over at WB Games. The event was f*****g nuts! 5,000+ GameStop managers were invited to this convention to see and test the latest games they will have in their stores. Bryant “Kitana Prime” Benzing was the other player who got invited to the event.

MB: What are you initial impressions of IJ2 so far? What are the major differences between the first game and this one, besides the new gear system? Does it change how you approach the game? Also, is there anything new that NRS has added to the game that they haven’t announced yet?

ML: My impression when I first picked up the game was not a shock. NRS improves with every new game they create and they definitely delivered with IJ2. The difference between IJGA and IJ2 is a whole lot! Better graphics, better walk speed, faster gameplay, more detailed quotes from the characters and better anti-airs which means you have to respect your opponent and not just jump in like a wild person.

There’s definitely new mechanics. The roll and air tech is a big one that will be a big part of your strategy. If they haven’t announced something new yet I don’t think I should say.

MB: Which characters did you play as, and were there any unannounced characters that you got to try out or are you not allowed to say?

ML: I played as Supergirl. That’s the character they wanted me to showcase at the event. I had to make her look as good as possible so I memorized her entire move list and started working hard to create combos for her. I only had a day to practice so I hit the lab hard! All the characters on the character select screen have been announced.

MB: You told me you got to talk to Mortal Kombat co-creator, Ed Boon. Care to share what you two conversed about exactly?

ML: Boon is one hell of a nice guy! He’s as big of a troll in real life like he is on Twitter. Always getting a rise out of people. We talked about the MKX patch but I can’t go into detail on it. I also told him to put Plastic Man in IJ2 because that’s my all-time favorite DC character! I also showed him my MK tattoo and told him “Look what you made me do!” He replied “Sorry for making you do that, (laughs)”.

MB: I know you’re a huge fan and a serious competitor of the MK series. If MK still has a future in the FGC along with IJ2, will you play both games competitively in the long run? If so, who are you looking forward to playing as in IJ2?

ML: I’ll always be a competitor at heart and I do look forward to competing in both NRS titles. I’m probably going to be playing a zoner/setup character because that’s my favorite play style in a fighting game. Lately I have been thinking of helping the FGC out in another way besides just competing and entertaining. Commentator, announcer, event organizer… who knows what the future holds for Michaelangelo. All I know is it’s been a dream of mine to work in the gaming industry ever since I was a little boy and I don’t see myself slowing down!

Capcom’s Character Introduction Series (Aegis) Reflects on Urien and His Abilities in Street Fighter V

We are two days away from unleashing the Illuminati on the cast of Street Fighter V. With that, Capcom is preparing everyone for Urien’s release! Today, Capcom has released another edition of the Character Introduction Series for our viewing pleasure.

After the perfunctory introduction of Urien himself, we get a little more information about his proper usage in the game. Capcom was able to explain his V-skill, which adds armor to his special moves, as well as his infamous Aegis Reflector, now his V-trigger–which already has a nasty reputation from Street Fighter III: Third Strike for its juggle, damage, and stun potential.

Lastly, they summarize by reminding people that Urien has no cross-up, but has a lot of potential in aggression.

Stare into the Shadows of Two of Shadaloo’s Darkest Creations in These CFN Profiles

The next pair of character profiles we’ll be spotlighting from the Shadaloo Activity Report will take us to a very interesting and beloved period in Capcom’s fighting game history, the Vs. Series! Specifically: 1997’s Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter and 1998’s Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes.

As the World Warriors, the X-Men, and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are busy dealing with the universe-threatening machinations of Apocalypse, Cyber Akuma, and Onslaught respectively, the tyrannical dictator M. Bison is inadvertently left to his own darkly devious devices. In Nash’s ending in X-Men vs. Street Fighter, he is captured by Bison and experimented on by Shadaloo, undergoing brainwashing and cyberization. Though Nash would remain absent from the default roster, a secret character known as Shadow could be unlocked who resembled a palate-swapped version of Nash, with his entire body nearly blacked-out–his only distinguishing feature being the color of his pants, in addition to having a white gleam from behind his glasses. His attacks were augmented with the visual effect of Psycho Power flames engulfing his opponent upon contact. He returned in MvC as an Assist character, and has also made a few appearances in the UDON Comics continuity, showing up in both Street Fighter – Round One: Fight! and most recently in The Life and Death(s) of Charlie Nash, which recounts the Air Force Soldier’s unfortunate brushes with the Grim Reaper in preparation for his proper reintroduction to the series in Street Fighter V. Shadaloo’s Private Nakagawa explains:

Private Nakagawa: This is a warrior that has been remodeled by our Shadaloo. He resembles someone. Who could he be? He fights with Psycho Power and mechanical power.

Basic Info:

Name: Shadow
Height: 186cm
Weight: 150kg
Blood type: Unknown
Birthday: Unknown
Home Country: Made in Shadaloo
Likes: Justice
Dislikes: Evil, Running out of Battery Power

Private Nakagawa: A warrior remodeled by our Shadaloo. He brings down his formidable opponents using Lord Bison’s Psycho Power and the latest state-of-the-art technology. By continuing to fight, memories of his past started to resurface, little by little, and he renounced Shadaloo, defecting from us. He’s burdened with carrying a Psycho Battery, which gives him 48 hours of operation with continuous autonomy. His Special Moves are:
Shadow Boom, the compressed Psycho Power projectile;
Shadow Shell, an anti-air with Psycho Power emmiting from his feet;
Shadow Assault, which absorbs the opponent’s energy. [Shadow never had this Move in MSHvSF, so since this is the SFV version of the character, perhaps it’s his “equivalent” to Nash’s Tragedy Assault?]
Just who the hell is he?

This brings us to Shadow Lady, a hidden character who appeared in Marvel vs. Capcom as an alternate version of Chun-Li who suffered a similar fate to Shadow at the hands of M. Bison and Shadaloo. In her own ending, it’s revealed that a similar fate befell Cyberbots protagonist Jin Saotome following an encounter with the Mighty One. She can most recently be seen in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, as Chun-Li’s alternate color #6.

Private Nakagawa: This is the second warrior remodeled by our Shadaloo. She fights with the weapons inserted into her mechanized body. She had no objection to having that increased mobility and impeccable fighting strength, but she escaped from Shadaloo anyway…

Dislikes: Lord Bison, Running out of Battery Power

Private Nakagawa: A warrior remodeled by our Shadaloo. Unlike Shadow, she was only mechanized. (Hasn’t she received Psycho Power?) She has mini-Vernier thrusters in the soles of her feet, and can jump straight up to the 3rd floor with her 3-step jump. As soon as her remodeling surgery was completed, she regained her memories and broke away from Shadaloo, renouncing us. She united with Shadow and fights to defeat evil day and night. Her Special Moves are:
Miracle Drill, in which she charges forward with a drill made of an alloy of Light Ceratanium; [The CFN Portal site is referencing Mega Man. It’s “Light Ceramical Titanium” in the original Japanese game.]
Plasma Barrier, that releases electricity from her body;
Big Bang Laser, a super BIG, ultra-thick, laser!
Just who the hell is she?

That wraps up the Shadaloo Activity Report’s coverage of Shadow and Shadow Lady, but we’ve decided to include the various endings involving these characters, so you can see their story unfold for yourselves, as well as a few gameplay videos to remind players of what these two were capable of back in the day!

Do you have any memories of unlocking these characters back in the day, or encountering them for the first time? Did this article inspire you to dust off your old copies of these games? Feel free to share in the Comments!

What Type of Chaos are Balrog, Juri and Urien Looking to Unleash in Street Fighter V? Find Out in Their CFN Portal Profiles

Insatiable Greed. Unrelenting Vengeance. Unstoppable Aspirations. These are just a few phrases one could use to describe the next subjects of the Shadaloo Activity Reports’ personal research profiles. This triumvirate of evil spans three generations of Street Fighter, each one leaving a permanent impression on their debut title that would be felt for years to come–both within the series canon, as well as the playerbase who either loved to hate them, or embraced their power. We now present the latter half of Street Fighter V’s Season One DLC Characters, and three of the most infamous and memorable baddies in SF history! First up, Street Fighter II’s Dirty Bull, the Las Vegas street boxer who was banned from the ring for illegal tactics, Balrog!

Private Nakagawa: Finally, he’s here, Lord Balrog! One of Shadaloo’s Four Heavenly Kings, with the power to be in charge. Here’s his Command List!

Balrog Street Fighter V Official Artwork

Basic Info:

Name: Balrog
Height: 193cm
Weight: 135kg
Blood type: A
Birthday: September 4
Home Country: USA
Likes: Women, Bourbon, Money
Dislikes: Fish, Mathematics, Effort
Fighting Style: “Brawl style” Boxing

Private Nakagawa: One of Shadaloo’s Four Heavenly Kings. A man who came from the slums, who rose in the world only with his boxing strength. In the past he ended the careers of a great number of boxers, until he was banished from the boxing world. Shadaloo scouted him, buying his power and greed. He is greedy and has a short temper, devoted to his own ambitions and desires, and tosses himself at his opponent without a second thought, regardless of the consequences, pummeling him with his violent and tremendous punches. He’s the type who’s not intelligent, but operates by instinct and intuition. Often works jointly with Ed, a young boy he once protected at S.I.N.’s demolished site.
… I’ve not written in polite expressions or honorifics because it’s my duty…! Ah, Lord Balrog, forgive meeee!

Next, we venture into the dark lair of the twisted and sadistic South Korean Spider, Juri Han!

Private Nakagawa: She was known by her codename “Spider” in the past. An ex-member of the original S.I.N. Here’s her Command List!

Juri Street Fighter V Official Artwork

Basic Info:

Name: Juri
Height: 165cm
Weight: 57kg
Blood type: AB
Birthday: January 1
Home Country: South Korea
Likes: Spicy Foods, Spiders
Dislikes: People That Are Difficult To Get Into, Rules
Fighting Style: Taekwondo

Private Nakagawa: She likes strife and suffering, and her utmost joy is to crush and destroy her fighting opponents; she’s a sadistic pleasure-seeker. After losing the Fēng Shǔi Engine embedded in her left eye, she wears an eyepatch, whereunder she actually hides a new power, the Fēng Shǔi Engine Type alpha. She rescues the runaway Decapre and Cammy, who was trying to help Decapre; not for her good intentions, rather because she finds the whole thing amusing and interesting. She hates Lord Bison, who stole her eye.

Finally, we’ve arrived at the 6th and last DLC Character, the Vice-President of the Illuminati, the Treacherous Disciple, Urien!

Private Nakgawa: The Vice-President of the Secret Society led by Gill. Energetic suits suit him! Wait a little longer for his Command List.

Basic Info:

Name: Urien
Height: 195cm
Weight: 120kg
Blood type: Unknown
Birthday: Unknown
Home Country: Unknown
Likes: Personal Gain
Dislikes: Gill
Fighting Style: Secret Techniques

Private Nakagawa: He was a candidate for the Presidency of the Secret Society, but he was denied the position because of his emotional instability. He has absolute faith and confidence in his own abilities, and because he has the conceit and prideful nature to think of himself as an elite, his personality is extremely arrogant and selfish. He feels joy by showing off his overwhelming power and force to people and ruling them, displaying his domination over others. He strongly and firmly believes he’s the appropriate and suitable King of the World.

That brings Shadaloo’s coverage of the remaining Season One DLC Characters to an end. And with that, it seems every single playable character in the entire Street Fighter series (save for Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX Ingrid, if she gets one separate from the non-canon Capcom Fighting All-Stars version) has been profiled by the Shadaloo Activity Report! You can check out the profiles of the other three DLC Characters here.

Red Bull eSports Discusses Why Fighting Game Players Are Often Tapped for Game Testing

If you are a fighting game enthusiast who has wanted to get paid for sitting around playing games, you may not have considered game testing. You may want to: it’s being found that fighting game players are in high demand in the field.

Red Bull has hit the pavement to find that various independent developers have been reaching out to the fighting game community for game testing. With the indie game corner becoming a mainstay at Evolution Championship Series (including the puzzle game Spaera, pictured above), it is no doubt that the indie developers are starting to look toward us as the standard-bearers for the main things developers test–balance, bugs, glitches, and fun factor.

The biggest factor for reaching out to fighting game players is that they are more apt to be able to break games, and easily replicate the issues. This helps expedite the turnaround for fixing the game before launch.

While this article talks primarily about public testing, there are always opportunities out there for players to becoming commercial game testers. If you had never thought about branching into the field, you may want to keep your eyes peeled on job sites.
