“Two Minute Tutorials” teaches you how to learn from your Street Fighter V replays

When grinding out hours of matches online, it’s easy to lose sight of small mistakes made in each individual match. While going back and watching our worst moments doesn’t have the same thrill as playing the game itself, the extra effort might help you identify leaks in your game you didn’t know you had.

That’s the topic of PugilistPenguin‘s latest “Two-Minute Tutorials”, his excellent self-improvement series for Street Fighter V. Whether it’s fake pressure you were unaware you were falling for or punishment opportunities you missed, there’s always a way for an analytical player to improve if they put the work into it.

Are guest characters good or problematic? Maximilian discusses the question

Guest characters seem to be in vogue again, as we’re seeing more and more crossover characters in many fighting games. We’ve recently seen the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sub Zero step into Injustice 2. More recently, the most surprising reveal has been Final Fantasy XV‘s Noctis joining Tekken 7.

This the topic Maximilian Dood is tackling in his latest video. He poses the question of whether guest characters cause more harm or good for a fighting game. For instance, a con of having a guest character is taking up time and resources for a side character rather than using it for someone from the franchise that fans of the specific title might be waiting on. In Maximilian’s opinion, Noctis not only doesn’t belong in Tekken 7, but he also delays other fan-favorites that haven’t made it to the game yet.

On the other hand, they can bring a lot of hype as well; everyone remembers the Soul Calibur II guest characters, Heihachi, Spawn, and Link. We’ve also often Akuma step into other games, not to mention the fact that X-Men vs. Street Fighter is entirely built on a guest character battle. There are countless other examples.

What’s your opinion? Talk about it in the comments below and mention your favorite guest characters.

Paradise Arcade Shop opens pre-orders for the Magenta joystick, intends to ship on January 15th

After Evo, we wrote a preview piece on the Magenta, Paradise Arcade Shop’s optical joystick. While their intent was to release in September, several issues along the supply chain caused them to push back the release until they were able to fix those issues.

At long last, the team has announced that pre-orders for what can be described as the Cadillac of arcade levers has opened. Going at the price tag of $99.99, the stick will come with all the bells and whistles described in our preview article alongside five replaceable springs of different weights so you can emulate whatever style stick you want.

Further, if you pre-order, you receive an entry into a raffle for a free prototype version of the Magenta–which functions just as the real thing but with a 3D printed casing for the board. There will be three raffles, and if you order now, you will receive entry in all three raffles. Ordering later will obviously only net you entries into the raffles still to be drawn.

Red Bull: Tower of Pride results, featuring Tokido, Daigo Umehara, Nemo, Luffy, and others

While the United States enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday yesterday, some of Japan’s top Street Fighter V talent was facing off at Red Bull’s Tower of Pride event in Tokyo. The open entry event took place in three stages: in stage one, challengers faced off in groups for the right to face off against one of eight “gatekeepers” in stage two. The winners of the gatekeeper matches advanced into an eight-player single-elimination bracket in stage three.

The event’s eight gatekeepers included Hx.CYG BST|Daigo Umehara, RB|Bonchan, QanbaDouyu|Xiao Hai, Echo Fox|Tokido, NASR|Big Bird, GGP|Kazunoko, DNG|Tachikawa, and AW|Nemo. Among the challengers to emerge from the Tower of Pride were Capcom Cup qualifiers RB|Luffy, CO|Dogura, CO|GO1 and Gachikun, along with strong Japanese players Machabo, Anman, Vanao, and Mizuha.

During the group stage, each player was given 10 coins to wager against the other players in their groups during their matches. The player with the most coins advanced onto the gatekeeper match. A number of notable players competed in stage one, but failed to move on to the next round, such as Bx3|Phenom, Haitani, DNG|Itabashi Zangief, John Takeuchi, StormKubo, and Reiketsu.

The event was streamed by Red Bull Japan, with Jiyuna providing commentary in English with 2DJazz on his own channel, AnimeIlluminati. You can find the videos with the original Japanese audio here.

The King of Fighters XIV is on sale on Steam

SNK’s The King of Fighters XIV may be one of the most criminally underplayed big name fighting games on the market. Arguably one of the best fighting games to come out last year, the game’s lackluster graphics and supposedly steep learning curve have discouraged some players from trying this otherwise excellent game out.

For those looking to give the game a chance, now may be the perfect time to get on board. The PC version of The King of Fighters XIV is currently on sale on Steam. Interested players can pick it up for only $29.99, 50% off its regular price of $59.99.

The same 50% discount also applies to The King of Fighters XIV’s “Deluxe Pack,” which comes with the four DLC characters. This brings its price down to only $37.99, down from $74.99. Finally, for those who already have the base game, the DLC “Upgrade Pack” is also subject to the same 50% discount. The pack now goes for only $9.99, down from its regular price of $19.99.
