ESPN polls Street Fighter V pros on who they think is the world’s best player

During Brooklyn Beatdown Round 2 last weekend, ESPN Esports was on hand to chat to many of the top players attending this high-stakes tournament. With several pros jockeying for the top spot, they asked all their interviewees the same question — who is the best Street Fighter V player at the moment?

Based on the feature image above, you can hazard a guess as to who many players think is the best. Despite him coming second at Evo and not being able to conquer the Raging Demon Tokido, the majority of players said that Punk was the current best in the world. According to Daigo Umehara, Punk’s performances are just on “another level” compared to everyone else.

With his Karin busting everyone up, many of the players that ESPN talked to said that they were picking up a grappler just to deal with Karin. NuckleDu is working on his Birdie, Alucard was planning to counterpick Abigail, while Justin Wong noted that one of Punk’s bad habits is that he takes too many grabs. The overwhelming consensus is that grapplers may be the silver bullet to put down Punk. Even then, Smug noted that while he can beat Punk’s Karin with Balrog, he’ll just “switch to another character” to find a solution.

While Punk was the main person that people pointed to as the best, Tokido was in close second. With Capcom Cup 2017 fast approaching, we’ll soon have the answer.

Tekken 7’s arcade rebalance “Version N” hits consoles and Steam in the form of Version 1.07, available now

It was only last week that Tekken 7‘s arcade version received the new balance patch for “Version N”. The patch dropped suddenly and without any note as to when it would reach consoles: which, it turns out, is exactly how the console patch based on it, Version 1.07, was dropped today!

Even though the official Tekken website hasn’t updated at the time of this writing, you can turn on your PS4 or Steam right now and get the latest version. In addition to the balance changes (rejoice, non-fans of Xiaoyu’s previously safe Art of Phoneix sweep!), there’s a number of new character portraits for several members of the cast.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has abrupt combo-limiting mechanics

No more infinites in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, eh?

Players are busy figuring out the limitations of the newly released Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. In desk’s latest videos, he finds something interesting. By testing out combos made entirely out of normal attacks, it seems like Capcom put in an awkward-looking stopper to infinites.

In the video below, you can see combos from Captain Marvel and Chun-Li made out of normal attacks only. It appears that the combo automatically drops after the 38th hit lands. The opponent simply flips out in the air. desk calls this a “true end” to the combo, meaning it’s not possible to continue it further, regardless of hitstun decay. He speculates this could be linked to using light attacks, or that there’s an actual hard limit on combo hits.

Conversely, rooflemonger, in the video below, explores a different aspect. According to his testing, the combos seem to end based more on damage, than hitstun. He goes about discovering this in a different method, though: by doing highly damaging combos nearing 4.8K. Maybe there are two different ways a combo can be forced to drop?

Let us know in the comments below what you’ve dug up so far about MvC:I and how these combo stoppers actually work. Check out our MvC:I tutorial round-ups for more coverage on the game.

Some of the bigger re-balanceing changes are:

increase ghost damage refill (x2)
decrease stamina bonus (50 -> 20)
add +20 protection during 5s

Parry successful:
decrease stamina bonus (30 -> 15)

Attacks
Decrease range and impact on guard of fastest attacks
Increase impact on guard of Breaking attacks

1v1
health refill on kill now take in account the health ratio of both players at the beginning of the round

Others
Increase weight/mobility impact on stamina
Increase dodge iFrames (2 -> 4)
Keep shards after death

You can read the full list of changes in the update here on their official website.

The six masks are all based off of other DigitalDevolver franchises, such as Hotline Miami and The Talos Principle. While this is the most visible change in the latest patch, players will likely be more excited by the resolution to a power loss bug that has been plaguing the game since launch.

Poongko is ending his Capcom Pro Tour 2017 run, may not be able to come back next year

One of the most exciting Street Fighter competitors to watch is Lee Chung Gon, a.k.a. Poongko. The Korean competitor has made a name for himself both for his near flawless execution with Seth in Street Fighter IV and Kolin in Street Fighter V (which has earned him the nickname “the Machine”), as well as his antics on stream — often taking off his shirt to signify becoming “angry” and then playing even more seriously.

For fans of Poongko and his Kolin, it seems that they won’t be able to experience his antics any more this year. In a recent tweet, Poongko announced that he was dropping out of this year’s Capcom Pro Tour. More worryingly, he says that due to his personal situation, he may not also be able to compete next year.

While a number of great strides have been made over the years to making competitive fighting games a viable way to make a living, that doesn’t mean that personal issues and other reasons can’t stop players from doing so. Sometime, a player simply needs to step back and focus on their personal lives. We here at Shoryuken wish the best for Poongko, and hope he can return soon!
